Greg Garmon Arrested

Yeah, they smelled it after they found it. I don't necessarily believe what they say.

Could have got searched for being black and driving with no registration. Then found weed and wrote in report that they smelled it.

I don't necessarily believe it either, but it's going to pass as probable cause.

I'd like to know what Kirk's reaction is to this stuff in team meetings. Does he fly off the handle and smack his guys around to beat sense into them or does he just quietly say something like "well that's football", chew gum, and write Garmon's name on his clipboard that contains a long and distinguished list of program offenders...

Unless there was enough weed with the intent to sell (which wasn't the case), I highly doubt an arrest was made.

For you guys who think that drug possession is only a minor infraction like a parking ticket or something, that's not correct. It's a misdemeanor criminal offense virtually everywhere. That's why the articles use the word "arrested," because for misdemeanors you get handcuffed, booked, fingerprinted, and jailed. A larger amount or intent to sell is a felony.

Our country and our idiot kids would be way better off if small amounts were only infractions, but there are very few places that treat drugs that way right now. What's even stupider is the number of localities that treat alcohol related offenses (non-DUI) as criminal misdemeanors rather than ticketable infractions. Iowa City is one such place, which has really distorted the number of "arrests" of student athletes who, if they were attending a different college in a different town, may have only received a ticket for the underage possession or public intox incident, not a criminal record.

Actually, it depends on the state.

For instance, in Minnesota, possession of marijuana (without the intent to sell) is a "petty misdemeanor". "Petty misdemeanor" in the state of MN is a petty offense which is prohibited by statute but does not constitute a crime and carries a sentence of a fine of not more than $300. Therefore, you are not arrested for possession of marijuana in Minnesota. You are given a ticket.

In Pennsylvania, it appears possession of a small amt of weed is classified as a misdemeanor - up to 30 days jail and $500 fine. http://norml.org/pdf_files/state_penalties/NORML_PA_State_Penalties.pdf

Again, all depends on the state. In this case, Garmon may have been arrested, he may have been just ticketed. The misdemeanor infraction doesn't mean the cops have to arrest him or the judge has to give him jail time or fines. Likely he wasn't arrested, was ticketed, will need to go to court, he will plea out, pay $250 and maybe get a minimal probation. However, seeing that he's 19, it might sway the judge one way or another. Either way, I don't see it as a huge deal.

It's pretty clear that he was arrested, that's what the news said, and that is what Penn law says. You don't get ticketed by a cop for a misdemeanor, you get arrested. That's what a misdemeanor is. What happens in front of the judge has nothing to do with the actual arrest and processing of the misdemeanor. Hopefully he gets only a fine or probation, but that will still be on a misdemeanor criminal arrest, not a simple infraction like a parking ticket or jaywalking.

Unfortunately Iowa is no longer in a position to keep encountering issues at the RB position. The depth chart is starting to look pretty weak.

Time to pull out the spread offense, Davis. That's my offering to the AIRBHG gods.

What, you don't think KF can adjust?

How stupid do you need to be to have this opportunity in front of you and put yourself in a situation with some weed and an expired registration? My God, he is supposed to arrive on campus soon and to even put yourself in that situation is so idiotic. Maybe the guy upstairs is telling us to simply go with the spread offense and rid of the running back position ...

I do understand what you are saying and believe me when I say the cognitive thinking skills of humanity as a whole has greatly deteriorated; but it’s still not that hard to “get” what he was thinking.

1st off a very large percentage of the kids I played football with smoked dope. Doesn’t make it ok, but just because he happens to be the crème de la crème of high school football players he still thinks like most of them… meaning..."man I leave for Iowa next week and I think I’m going to have one last burn because I won’t have a chance again in some time……"

2nd……other than making you look bad and your level of commitment seem shallow, it’s not difficult to play high school football while smoking dope. You honestly don’t need to be in that good of physical conditioning at all or at least it doesn’t even compare to the conditioning needed to say…wrestle.

3rd…and finally if we really knew who was posting and what they did as a youth or for that matter what they are doing right now….we’d get a whole different level of understanding and conversations on here.

So while I’m a born again Christian and against this stuff as a rule, I get it and choose to have a lot of empathy. My bent is against the naysayers and critics who so openly and loudly criticize others…as you may know..:D

News flash: 18 year old young men are knuckleheads! More breaking news: People smoke a lot of doobie in this country!

Its disappointing that this occurred so close to the start of the season and before the kid has stepped foot on campus. That said, maybe it will snap him into shape so that he is an alter boy from here on out. I would not be shocked one bit if KF makes the kid red shirt this year.

Jaywalking is illegal.
Downloading unpaid MP3s/movies is illegal.
Watching streaming video from an unlicensed source is illegal.
Going to another state and buying the "good fireworks" is illegal.
Speeding is illegal.
Keep it in context.

I remember an Iowa Football player who, not wearing all his clothes, ran away from the police in an intoxicated state and lead them on a 20 minute chase.... before he played a snap in an Iowa uniform. And now he's in the NFL. Underaged drinking is illegal. Running away from the cops is illegal.

But, yeah, I'm sure possessing a small amount of weed is just the worst thing ever. Especially considering it's the summer after his senior year and he isn't even on campus.

Like I said - IT'S JUST WEED.

You really do not get it spank. This is one of the dumbest posts in this history of this board. It says alot about you frankly. Stop making excuses and justfying a stupid decision. If you want to think being arrested for marijuana and speeding are the same. I am not going to waste my time. Think what you want.

I think a game or two is warranted.
He won't "be in good standing" for a little bit, but it's not like he was pulled over drunk driving underage (Shaun Prater) or being an upperclassman drunk driving midseason (Broderick Binns). Even America's Boy, Ricky Stanzi, got caught drinking underage. All of these acts are illegal - just like possession of marijuana.

Again, fans need to keep it in context here. Unfortunately, because they hear "marijuana" or "pot" or "weed" - they think DRUGS OH NO DRUGS!! SOCIETY IS RUINED!

Context.

Sure is easy to tell the posters that love to smoke a little weed. Not all that shocking, I suppose. The issue has little to do with weed, I know you arent getting that. It continues to be poor decisions that Iowa players are making.

The problem with trying to gauge this deal and KF’s reaction by past transgressions are…..no crime is the same, no child is the same and no issue is the same.

Adam was very well liked by the staff and comments about him and his effort and demeanor prior to these incidents support that. But he obviously had some prior issues, and while suspended from a bowl game he got arrested….that’s a no-brainier.

DJK was not overly well liked by even some of his peers or so it seems. He was continually maligned with poor effort claims and lack of focus and then he proved it all by his historic flame out. Again not at all the same thing…..

We never have all the info or even most of it, so we really can’t get an honest true gauge on it and really to speculate only fuels anxiety in my mind. I will be shocked if much of anything comes from this, but if something does Ill completely trust the staff and their decision. Too me it does look a little bad or at least embarrassing, but it’s not a major infraction. A as we have found out in recent months, the SEC apparently has kids failing multiple tests per year and as long as it isn’t administered by the NCAA, no ones the wiser and very little time is missed….currently enrolled and on campus would be a little bigger deal and in school session would be even bigger with an infraction during football season being the worst deal.
