How do you know they smelled marijuana?
Cops have smelled marijuana in every car they've pulled over in the last 50 years.
How do you know they smelled marijuana?
Yeah, they smelled it after they found it. I don't necessarily believe what they say.
Could have got searched for being black and driving with no registration. Then found weed and wrote in report that they smelled it.
I don't necessarily believe it either, but it's going to pass as probable cause.
True. Either way, I doubt he misses a game. If he does it will be one.
We all missed a huge angle on this story.
Didn't Garmon have (and beat) cancer? The weed was MEDICINAL !
Pretty sure it's medicinal.
Unless there was enough weed with the intent to sell (which wasn't the case), I highly doubt an arrest was made.
For you guys who think that drug possession is only a minor infraction like a parking ticket or something, that's not correct. It's a misdemeanor criminal offense virtually everywhere. That's why the articles use the word "arrested," because for misdemeanors you get handcuffed, booked, fingerprinted, and jailed. A larger amount or intent to sell is a felony.
Our country and our idiot kids would be way better off if small amounts were only infractions, but there are very few places that treat drugs that way right now. What's even stupider is the number of localities that treat alcohol related offenses (non-DUI) as criminal misdemeanors rather than ticketable infractions. Iowa City is one such place, which has really distorted the number of "arrests" of student athletes who, if they were attending a different college in a different town, may have only received a ticket for the underage possession or public intox incident, not a criminal record.
I think it's time Iowa give up on the concept of having running backs and just pass every play.
Actually, it depends on the state.
For instance, in Minnesota, possession of marijuana (without the intent to sell) is a "petty misdemeanor". "Petty misdemeanor" in the state of MN is a petty offense which is prohibited by statute but does not constitute a crime and carries a sentence of a fine of not more than $300. Therefore, you are not arrested for possession of marijuana in Minnesota. You are given a ticket.
In Pennsylvania, it appears possession of a small amt of weed is classified as a misdemeanor - up to 30 days jail and $500 fine. http://norml.org/pdf_files/state_penalties/NORML_PA_State_Penalties.pdf
Again, all depends on the state. In this case, Garmon may have been arrested, he may have been just ticketed. The misdemeanor infraction doesn't mean the cops have to arrest him or the judge has to give him jail time or fines. Likely he wasn't arrested, was ticketed, will need to go to court, he will plea out, pay $250 and maybe get a minimal probation. However, seeing that he's 19, it might sway the judge one way or another. Either way, I don't see it as a huge deal.
Unfortunately Iowa is no longer in a position to keep encountering issues at the RB position. The depth chart is starting to look pretty weak.
How stupid do you need to be to have this opportunity in front of you and put yourself in a situation with some weed and an expired registration? My God, he is supposed to arrive on campus soon and to even put yourself in that situation is so idiotic. Maybe the guy upstairs is telling us to simply go with the spread offense and rid of the running back position ...
Jaywalking is illegal.
Downloading unpaid MP3s/movies is illegal.
Watching streaming video from an unlicensed source is illegal.
Going to another state and buying the "good fireworks" is illegal.
Speeding is illegal.
Keep it in context.
I remember an Iowa Football player who, not wearing all his clothes, ran away from the police in an intoxicated state and lead them on a 20 minute chase.... before he played a snap in an Iowa uniform. And now he's in the NFL. Underaged drinking is illegal. Running away from the cops is illegal.
But, yeah, I'm sure possessing a small amount of weed is just the worst thing ever. Especially considering it's the summer after his senior year and he isn't even on campus.
Like I said - IT'S JUST WEED.
I think a game or two is warranted.
He won't "be in good standing" for a little bit, but it's not like he was pulled over drunk driving underage (Shaun Prater) or being an upperclassman drunk driving midseason (Broderick Binns). Even America's Boy, Ricky Stanzi, got caught drinking underage. All of these acts are illegal - just like possession of marijuana.
Again, fans need to keep it in context here. Unfortunately, because they hear "marijuana" or "pot" or "weed" - they think DRUGS OH NO DRUGS!! SOCIETY IS RUINED!
