Sure is quiet on here...

we crushed a team ranked 120+ spots ahead of us in the rpi, effectively ending their ncaa tourney hopes. Nice statistic Mr. Objectivity...now tell me this...how good was the NW team that you watched tonight? Is it really impressive that we got up on them early and didn't surrender that lead...and don't tell me you weren't just waiting for that lead to disappear and NW to pull it out (not to bring up the porn/cheating thread).

eric may completely shut down the consensus big ten freshman of the year. This is true. May played good defense against Crawford...how impressive is it to hold an 11 point scorer to 5? We have known for a while that May is a good defender...how impressive was it for him to shut down a mediocre Big Ten player? Does the fact that Crawford is a freshman make it more impressive?

we shot 50% from three against the best three-point defending team in the league (29% is what they give up, on average). We did get open looks...and we hit them. Not too bad...but impressive...I don't know about that. Not that it has a statistical impact on percentage...but my guess is that we're the only team in the league that is going to live beyond the arc against this team...their posts were a joke.

we had 18 assists on 23 field goals. This is a useless statistic. I could be impressed by this...or if we scored a high percentage of our points on putbacks I could be impressed by that...or if we were able to penetrate and finish (not to bring up the porn/cheating thread) we could be impressed by that.

we scored the most points we have in a conference game in the year despite clanging ten free throws in the final minutes. Relative success does not necessarily translate to absolute success...especially when the comparison is being made to this year's Iowa basketball team.

i'm all for objectivity and realism, but i don't understand deliberately ignoring positive developments. and no amount of new mexico lobos scores will change the fact that steve alford won one tournament game in eight seasons at iowa. if that's all lick can do in eight years, then he should get the boot as well. but after the last ten years, we don't exactly have much to lose, do we?

I'm not ignoring positive developments. I think that this team is getting better...but they are still the worst basketball team Iowa has fielded in recent memory. I'm just saying lets not get too excited over one game...especially this one. I was very heavily invested personally in the 2005 team that lost to NW St...at that point I decided not to get too emotionally high or too emotionally low on account of Iowa athletics. I am still as big of an Iowa fan as you'll find...but I don't let a collegiate sporting event ruin my day/week/month/several months...and unless I am able to hit one of the 12 team parlays that I bet on because I'm an idiot...I'm not going to let collegiate sporting events make my day/week/month/year.

So what do we do with all those quiet people in a couple years when they want to jump back on the bandwagon???

Do we welcome them back warmly or continue to remind them of their past indiscretions?

If the latter is the case, then that will undermine what the team will have done in this hypothetical, and it will continue the fracture and disconnect between a segment of fans and the program. I doubt that is what you want.

I thought I heard the crowd get into pretty good at the start of the game and a couple times after a big basket or two. They seemed to get into it pretty good when Cougill hit the floor as you could hear the "COUG" cheer and then again when May hit the back to back threes.

Beyond that I personally think the Hawks took the crowd out of the game tonight with a dominating performance. They jumped out to a pretty good lead and held it throughout the night. NW never really challenged after the Hawks took the lead out to double digits. The cut it to 9 a few times but never got closer. Had they gotten closer I think the crowd may have gotten more "into" the game.

First of all good win for the hot shooting Hawks last night. Enjoyed watching them pound on NW.

Now i also agree with this comment above, more often than not the system keeps the crowds out of games. That is just what it is, it also lives and dies by the 3 alot more than any system should be. That is my major dislike about our current coach and why i want him gone. I don't think he can ever really bring back excitement back to the area.

That being said i hope the players keep winning because they are working hard and deserve that.

Good to see Matt G. try to drive to the hoop. If he gets 6-7 free throws per game he will average at a minimum 15 pts/game.

Good win and an entertaining game for once but I'm far from ready to hop
on the Lickliter bandwagon. The one thing that gives me hope is the fact that we will have guys like Brust, Marble and Larson playing the minutes that Ba, Lickliter and Brommer are playing right at this point. Now if only we can get through an off season with no transfers.

We shot lights out and NW couldn't hit anything. We got lucky to win tonight, if bawinkel has a normal game, we maybe win by 2 or 3. To bad the Big Ten tourny isn't played at Iowa City. That is about the only place we can shoot well. Still not impressed though, the hawks should of blown them out of the water!

Did the Hawks really do anything impressive tonight...ummm...not really. If you thought something was overly impressive...you let me know what it was. The defense was pretty decent against an awful offensive team...but I'm not going to start saying that we're anything more than one of the three worst teams in the Big Ten.

Let's not forget that we just beat Northwestern at home when they were missing their 2 best players...Thompson and Coble. Is there anything impressive about that...anything at all.
I can only assume you didn't watch the game to come out and say NW played without Juice. So that explain a lot of the rest of your post... but...

NW is far from an awful offensive team. They are extremely effective with the ball and they score a good number of points. The Princeton offense that Carmody has tweeked is not awful by any means.

Coble was out, but he has been all year. A Coble-less NW team beat Purdue, Michigan, NC State, Notre Dame, ISU, and Illinois. Sure NW isn't all-world, but it's the best NW team they've had in a long, long time. A team that was on the bubble for the NCAA, a bubble that Iowa is helping to burst.

This isn't a defining game for Iowa, but let's not minimize it because you have stereotypes and misinformation about NW.

Iowa was blowing a potential NCAA Tourney team out of the water.... they were up 18 late in the game. They couldn't hit a FT to save their lives, but they still dominated NW from start to finish. The Wildcats were never in the game, and that's something we haven't seen in a long time from Iowa.

It ended sort of like the Iowa- Michigan game did. You'd say Iowa got their arses handed to them in Ann Arbor, wouldn't you? But the final score was only a dozen or so. Doesn't stop the fact that Iowa got blown out by Michigan... just as Iowa blew out NW.

Agreed. A solid win (our best of the year so far according to opponent RPI & Record), and it looks like the team is getting better and playing more competetive basketball. That's what I wanted to see the rest of this year, regardless of record. Check.

Next up - WIN MORE games next year.

As for next year, we can only wait and see how it goes. I'm not sold yet, but at least I think there is some reason to hope. I agree with Ireign that getting through the offseason without transfers is an absolute must if we are going to have good success next year. If all goes well, Lickliter will finally have a full roster made up of mostly his own recruits, a first in his tenure, I'm curious to see how it goes.

It's looking like this year's team can at least get to 4 or 5 conference wins, and if they can match last year's 5-13 conference record, I would say that's a pretty good coaching job given what this staff has to work with this year, and that didn't look possible about a month ago. That doesn't mean I am excusing this staff of the transfers, but this year's roster is what it is. To match last year's conference win total would be a plus, IMO. I also think that means it's not unreasonable at all to expect next year's team to win no less than 7-8 conference games next year, assuming this year's team can get 4 or 5. We're only talking a couple more wins, so I don't think I'm asking for miracles.

Just for fun, I'm hopping on the Lickliter bandwagon. Why not? I'm tired of being negative about the Hawks.

If we can keep shooting 3's like we did last night and playing decent D, give me some of that kool-aid. And keep handing me pitchers of the stuff until we lose at Purdue. Then get ready for my wrathful tirade.

I think if you look at the last month of play (after the Tennessee St. win) Iowa has been a competitive basketball team in every game, save one (Michigan). No Iowa isn't world beaters, we all know this. At the same time they have hung with every team they have played lately, and ALL of these teams are deeper, more experienced, more athletic, and more talented.

This is encouraging to me anyway. I'm not going to disillusion myself and say they are a good team, because good teams win, period. Yet they play their a$$es off, they are becoming more cohesive as a team, and I think they can finish off this season with another win or two.

Being honest and being negative about every little thing are two seperate things. There should not be any reason for someone to make fun of or call players names either. I understand that people are not happy and that some people are half glass empty type of people. The calling for a coach to be fired for the 15 millionth time after a loss is old. I probably should avoid these parts after a loss to, might keep me sane.

And like I said, its pretty easy to distinguish between those people and the ones that are being objective. (at least it should be)

It isn't a game we often see anymore...nine white guys on the floor at one time playing most of the game, equal in talent. At least we were able to match up with them one on one with no problem and we were as quick as they were. The only other team I can think of that might have this many white guys would be BYU (I haven't seen them this year).

If they had worn short pants the game would have been a flashback to the 50's, stlye of play and all...just not something we see these days.

But it was a nice win for them. And because we are a bad road team and they are a good home team we will probably split the series.

Neither team had to worry about the other having a point guard break down their player at will like an Evan Turner. These teams will probably really enjoy playing each other in the future...nice change of pace for them not getting beat all the time and getting to play man to man and playing tough defense.

They got to go inside this game because of matchups. NW was missing their best player but even then they have been playing pretty good ball just not on the road. NW didn't play well on defense and Iowa shot well.

This will turn into a great series of equal athletic talent and similar slow down style of bb in the future-- NW/Iowa. There should be some future exciting games in the 40s between these two teams.

I think I would have preferred tough Iowa/MSU or Iowa/Indiana series but it is what is with Lickliter these days.

Some of us have a life. I didn't get to watch the game and the game didn't get tivo'd so I won't be able to watch it so no real comments on the game.

I won both sides. I took Iowa to win (money line) and the over so I was happy. NW is still NW and Iowa is still Iowa.

Last nights game didn't change my opinion of Lick one bit by the way. I remember a previous coach who's name escapes me that would pull a rabbit out of his hat just when you thought the last nail was being driven in. We won at home to NW. Not exactly that impressive.

Great to see the team execute and knock down open shots. It was fun to just watch a game and not be full of rage the entire game :)

After watching the Indiana vs OSU game on BTN it looks like Indidana and Iowa are going in different directions. Indiana looked very lethargic and lacked intensity. Iowa has been the opposite. The Hawks are playing with a ton of energy and intensity. I think that is a tribute to the players and coaches. The only difference is that Indiana fans still fill Assembly Hall and Iowa fans don't fill CHA. I hope the Hawks can keep the momentum of this win and have a great effort against Purdue and Michigan before we meet up with Indiana. I also hope the fans will support this team as well.

First, I’m happy... scratch that... thrilled with how Iowa played tonight. As Jon said in his front page story, we've seen glimpses of great play from this team. They finally put it together for most of a game.

However.... I still have to temper my enthusiasm. This team is notorious for taking one step forward & two steps back. Given the teams volitility and lack of consistancy, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'm not happy I'm feeling that way, it's just that I've been down this path before with this team only to get crushed later.

Great job by the team last night. I hope they can put together a string of games like this.
