Report: B1G Cancels Fall Football Season

Him and everyone else of political clout just want to throw their two cents in the mix without being on the hook for anything that happens/could happen as a result. It's always nice being able to gamble with other peoples money when your not responsible for the outcome and can simply walk away with nothing invested.

I just wish Trump was as effective at pandemic management as he is with paying and keeping Porn Stars quiet. We would sailed through this thing.

The idea of football in the spring seems silly too. The NFL draft is typically in late April which would interfere with any season. They could potentially move the combine and draft to the summer but I'd still assume a lot of players with any sort of draft potential are going to be opting out

Yeah I'm not real sure how you simply move a full season to the spring and then go straight into a fall season.

Wonder why they couldn’t just make students sign a waiver if they want to play and those w/ a condition who want to opt out don’t lose a yr of eligibility? Don’t punish all players w/ not having a season for the sake of probably a VERY small few who may have a condition. And the question should be asked, if there are students w/ a heart condition what are they doing playing football in the first place? And the impact of this goes so far beyond just the students being allowed to play or us as fans getting to watch. So many will lose jobs because of this. Horrible move by the b10.

If there is no football, there is no basketball either. Just saying. And that means no NCAAT either. 2 straight years of no dance, no college football (don't think for a second that CFB will play in the spring), financial Armageddon has arrived.

6 months to figure this out and this is what they do. 6 months to figure out how to do this safely and it seems all we get from these worthless leaders is excuses as to why they can't do it. I am not shocked at all, but it just pisses me off. I believe two things: 1. It was the school presidents and chancellors who wanted this shut down more than than anyone in sports because it was their chance to stick it to big time college sports for making their schools more about sports than academics, and 2. COVID 19 was not the only reason, likely not even the biggest reason this was done. I think these people in high places in college sports know their control is slipping away with players wanting to organize and have more of a say and a bigger piece of the financial pie. Cancelling the season is one way to try and blunt that movement.

Either way, Kevin Warren and others of his ilk who move in this direction are only cooking the golden goose that keeps the lights on at the conference. The ACC and SEC appear ready to move ahead, and if I am the NFL I am salivating at the thought of fewer college games to compete with and would try and gobble up as many weekend primetime TV slots as possible. While the Big Ten moves to hamper its financial future, other conferences and the NFL (if they are smart) will be fortifying their financial futures. Nice work Kevin.

Either way there were probably alot of ways to go forward safely and 6 months to figure it out and this is the decision these supposedly smart people come up with. Just looking out for themselves.

Yep. Alaric Jackson is gone.

So when does Nebraska announce they are playing this fall and against who?
Once again Scott Frost has opened his mouth and let shit out of it that can't be put back in.

Because yeah, let's eliminate ourselves from the Big Ten and give up gobs and gobs of money because we have to sit for one year. Lol.

They don't realize that with a state population of under 2 million that they really, really, really need to be in a conference that has an in market TV footprint in Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. As far as I'm concerned, Iowa, Nebraska and Northwestern just need to STFU and do what the conference wants, but Northwestern has a charter member exemption from removal, so it's really just Iowa and Nebraska that need to be worried if they are too loud because we clearly aren't carrying our cable TV viewership weight.

The point is moot, really, because the SEC/ACC/B12 will cancel too. They're just going to play it out longer and act like they were "doing everything humanly possible" to support athletes who wanted to play, and holding out until the last possible minute. That way they can try and save a little face as the conference(s) that gave up last.

They've made the decision already, they just want to make it look like it's not by their choice and not their fault.

So if the president's of the university voted on this how is it on Kevin? Regardless of what I think of the decision, with 14 schools involved in the voting process I would think it's more on them then it is on Kevin Warren. I do however agree that there may have been a number of other factors in play that lead to the cancellation.

I can't really say that I'm pissed off about this, because I questioned from the start how they could even go through with having a season, but definitely am pissed about how it was handled. Revised schedule released, media leaks decision that season has been cancelled, cancellation then gets retracted only to get confirmed the very next day. Talk about a PR shit storm. How does this all go down within 5 days with very little changes in the landscape regarding the virus. It's seriously jumping from one side to the other with no apparent reason when they'd done very little in the 6 months leading up to it.

Agreed its a PR move similar to the one used by the blowhole to the west.

I think the B1G tried to get everyone on board to jointly cancel so they don't look like knucklefucks if there isn't unanimous cancellation. The SEC sharks are going to smell blood in the water. Just like on May 12 when I was 50/50 on the SEC, I remain at that level today. This could be a dagger to kill OSU. If the B1G and PAC don't play, but you still have the SEC on, they will land like 90% of the top recruits. The NCAA is a cartel, just like OPEC, and cartel members are more than willing to stab other members in the back if it is for their own personal benefit. The South is pretty much open for business and I don't think they have the risk aversion the Yankees have.

I am confused. Kevin Warren has to be secretly rooting for ACC and SEC schools not to play football, but doesn't he have a kid on a SEC squad? He is either going to come out of this looking really awesome or really bad.

Absolutely...but it also gives them a great excuse to leave. Potentially a great opportunity to leave the BIG 10 for another conference where they might be competitive without having to come out and say "our tradition is too strong for us not to be competing for division titles year in and year out in the BIG 10 so we have decided to leave the conference with the hope of finding a conference where we might eventually be relevant again".
The MAC is always looking for competitive teams.

You know there are more important things in life than college football and money.....

Welp, time to move on to the next priorities, which are (a) replacing Kirk Ferentz and (b) cutting lots of non-revenue sports. (a) is a no-brainer. The only thing left to talk about for the next year is how racist KF is? Hard pass. Pay him off to "retire" and find someone much younger to take over the program. And so is (b). With no FB and BB money, there's no reason to keep all of these programs that the athletes' parents won't even watch. End them now, let those students get on with their lives, and decide what's worth keeping.
