Oliver Martin Transfer

I would be perfectly fine with OM as a Hawkeye. If he decided to come home, and IF the coaches thought it would make sense, it’s game over. I can’t even count the number of times I have changed my mind over my many years on the planet. Some good ones, some really dumb ones.

7 points of genius: (not to be confused with the 7 deadly sins or the 7 cardinal virtues)

1) Whenever there is talk about a player transferring we the fans need to put it to a vote, and then submit the results to the HC. I'm sure each of us will get a personalized thank you.

2) This thread is much ado about nothing (see page 3). Does that mean the other threads which don't have that seal of disapproval are about "something"?

3) You would think "nothing" wouldn't generate 5 pages of replies, but you'd be wrong (see point 2).

4) There is a secret expiration date to threads/posts that only board overlords are privy to, and it changes from day to day (okay I'll let it go . . . wait, that doesn't sound like me, don't trust that promise)

5) This thread is unusually civil. Am I to assume everyone has taken their medication today?

6) The internet is serious business, we all need to remember that.

7) Is our fanbase unique? Or does the graphic below hint that mental illness defines humanity?

That's it. I thought Iowa made a huge push when he went juco. What about AJ Derby? I thought we had him for a minute, then he went juco and then Arkansas, right? I thought there were rumors of him possibly coming back to Iowa.

I don’t think there was much speculation about AJD coming back. He got in trouble, was switched to LB and left. Went to JUCO to go back to QB and landed with Bielema at Arkansas as a QB. Never won the job there and switched to TE.

One of the better athletes to come through eastern Iowa in my time here. Always wonder what might have been had he started his college career at LB or TE. Think he could have been a heck of a DE, too.

Now I remember why I enjoyed Oliver Martin's recruitment, its because I liked that old sitcom Martin from the nineties.

It's the weekend and day drinking is allowed.

Yes. Everyone has it. You only need to worry about the ones who don't think or know they do.

To what extent are some of the higher rated kids you've run across unwilling to take advice from coaches? I remember Derby thinking he was a QB and I think Christian French also had desires to play TE or WR or something. It seems to me that Ferentz is probably open to guys about where they should play and he seems really good at figuring it out, but my guess is there are less scrupulous coaches out there who will tell a kid what he wants to hear to get the commitment.

Why would Michigan want an Iowa QB who got beat out? . . . maybe because they wanted a double-digit win season and a bowl victory?

"Rudock was named the MVP of the 2016 Citrus Bowl. Rudock became the first quarterback in Michigan history to throw for at least 250 yards in five consecutive games."

Did he set a record at Iowa for handing the ball off? :p

Pierschbacher's last game was an embarrassing loss to Clemson. Had he gone to Iowa, he could have gone out on top with a pivotal Outback Bowl win. Guy made a big mistake. Huge.

Lol, now that’s funny!!!! Sad, pathetic, and true but funny as hell. “Throw more money at Kirk” as an old poster used to say. Now we can say “and his son too”.

I'm pretty sure Kirk pretty much makes what he deserves now. 10 years ago his salary was a joke compared to how good of a coach he was. Others have caught up now.

Fair point as the average salary has climbed to make his current salary look more average.

Not to go all socialist here, but does anyone else find it disgusting that the NCAA lets the "profit" from these athletic departments slide right out the back door in terms of compensation to coaches and athletic directors? The NCAA should put a freaking $2 million cap on coach salaries and allow for some formulaic bonus strictly based on wins and APR or something. I think the DC at Clemson makes over $2 mil base now.

I agree that the salaries for head football coaches seems out of whack, but putting a cap won't work. Until the money stops pouring in the salary war will continue. If the cap were in place boosters will find away around it.

Well, maybe we can go all communist and kill the boosters?

Hey guys, don't tell Kirk or his agent that coaching salaries have caught up to his deal from a few years ago. We know what will happen if they find out.

Hayden Fry used to say the players should form a union. Public institutions where some employees are getting super rich does bother me. I think a large portion of the money generated should be diverted into a trust that is waiting for the players when they leave school. Conferences (or the NCAA) should create rules capping salaries. PC fails to mention that 3 offspring got to play FBS ball, access to planes, 2 relatives on staff and the unbreakable contract, how do we know the HC doesn't value those things collectively more than the actual salary? Straight up salary comparisons miss the larger picture. Ask an SEC coach what it would be worth to him for 7 wins to = job security.

Yeah, that's my take. It's that the schools are public institutions save for a handful of them. If you lose a guy to the NFL, them's the breaks, but there's no reason for the major bidding wars in the college game. Yes, a lot of money has flowed into the system, but instead of using to enrich the academic institution, a handful of top men at each school pocket a bunch of it.

It sucks but it is inherent to economics. Just let the players market themselves and all "fairness" issues vanish.

I can't even count how many times I have moved away from Iowa.
There is something that just keeps bringing me back.
That said, I'm planning on talking the woman into a 5er pretty soon and some extended vacations somewhere warmer during the winter.

Just curious, what's a "5er"? Is this some sort of gangbang?
