Iowa Settles & Pays $6.5 Million For Lawsuits

Gary Barta should be fired with cause. No buyout, no "retirement". Fired. Zero dollars. Goodbye now. He has not only managed his department poorly, he has turned a completely winnable case into a multi-million dollar loss and painted a bullseye on the university for SJWs for years to come because he couldn't bother to do some paperwork to back up firing two people. No settlement. Fired for gross incompetence. Buh bye.
How can somebody who gets to the position of AD at a major university not know you need a paper trail when you plan to release someone.

Oh look, all the old bigoted white men have come out to comment. As much as you all might hate the verdict, the jury and the university have spoken -- they were in the wrong. Let's move on and get back to complaining about how awful GB has been in doling out contracts, etc.

Please direct your comments to the intended recipient, lest we all be offended.

So it cost the U 6 million to get rid of Jane Meyer. it was worth every penny. Ding dong the wicked witch is gone. The woman was toxic to the athletic dept. The university should attempt to get a restraining order against her for no admittance anywhere on the university property.

If someone is so toxic you document and have things in order to terminate properly. Shouldn't cost $6 Million to get rid of anyone!! Barta needs to be fired for incompetence..

While I don't agree with the "old, bigoted white men" part of Oks comment, it is hard to see how some of the posters here can be so offended when some have no problem making remarks like "They also mentioned that the money the two lesbo's will get would have been used somewhere in the athletic dept. now it won't. Meyer and Griesbaum better never show their ugly faces in Iowa City again".

There is a reason for discrimination laws. You can think you know better than the jurors in the Meyer case, but the fact is they are the only ones who heard the case presented and they came to a unanimous conclusion. As I said in another post, it was an embarrassment to the University to put a person with unquestioned integrity like Kirk Ferentz on the stand to talk about his problem with working with Meyer. That was not what her lawsuit was about. She was not fired because Kirk Ferentz and Tom Brands did not like her. If there were performance issues, they should have been documented. Insubordination can be a cause for termination.

They did the right thing by settling. It's a lot of money, but folks it could have been a lot worse. Meyer's award for lost wages could have been tripled by the judge. The external review will make suggestions for improvements in the hiring/evaluation practices of the University. That should be a good thing. Still think Barta should go.
Sorry this is so long

How do you know everyone who commented the way you don't like are old white men? You're stereotyping aren't you?

Guys on the radio think this move will save Barta's job. They also mentioned that the money the two lesbo's will get would have been used somewhere in the athletic dept. now it won't. Meyer and Griesbaum better never show their ugly faces in Iowa City again.

Why?

Why? You want as another lawsuit to lose?

This was a classic match up: Entrenched 50's Era White Men vs. New Age Lesbians. The old school boys never knew what hit them. Like a pass on first down, this whole experience had to be pretty shocking to Gary and KF. I have to admit, if I were a lesbian I'd be sending resumes to all the athletic directors over 55 or 60 in America...oh, and to Fox News. You don't even have to get your toys dirty...they settle to stop the public image carnage.

In other news, according the milk carton I just bought at the store, the University of Iowa Human Resources Department is still missing and unaccounted for.

You touched on an aspect of this situation that I don't think gets enough attention. Human Resources played a large role in this becoming such a mess by approving the relationship between Meyer and Griesbaum. As I've stated before coming from a military and government background where you have a clearly defined command structure that makes no sense to me given the inevitable conflict of interest that the relationship entailed. At that point Barta had his hands tied and it put him in a no win situation. He compounded things with his lack of documentation but this represents an administrative failure at multiple levels.

If they didn't approve the Meyer/Griesbaum relationship, it would have been just as bad, because Brian Ferentz (in his own words) reports to his dad on a day to day basis.
That would have definitely shown gender and/or orientation discrimination from the HR dept.

We can agree to disagree but I still don't see the Kirk/Brian relationship as equivalent because it doesn't cross management/staff lines like the relationship between the two women did. That said Brian's testimony that he reports directly to his dad didn't help Iowa's cause and if anything it gave the appearance of double standards which I think helped Meyer's case in holding the university liable.
