Iowa Settles & Pays $6.5 Million For Lawsuits

1. From what I've read, "little" documentation would be a generous characterization. 2. Must have. Maybe they thought putting Ferentz and Brands on the stand would be all that it would take.

I really think he just kept going along thinking she would leave on her own for some other job at a different school.

Whole lot of ignorance in this thread, IMO. Disappointing and sad.

Lesbos? Really? SMH.
Yeah. Catch my earlier post. Whether Griesbaum had a better case going in to the Meyer trial, she came out better. Also, if there are 50 year old white men facing this discrimination at Iowa I would be interested to see how their situations are handled.

I am apparently hopelessly out of it - had to look up these terms in order to fully understand this discussion: According to the interwebs:
Snowflake - someone hypersensitive to insult or offense, especially a young person with politically correct sensibilities.
Derp - used as a substitute for speech regarded as meaningless or stupid, or to comment on a foolish or stupid action.
Wag the Dog - used to indicate that attention is purposely being diverted from something of greater importance to something of lesser importance.

I feel so much better now having educated myself.

One of my lesbian friend refers to her wife as a lesbo quite often. There about the easiest going people I know, though.

It's kind of like African-Americans calling each other the N word. It's OK for them to use a word connected with years of oppression with each other as a sign of unity but not for Caucasians to do so.

I have a lot of gay friends and never have heard one of them refer to each other as a lesbo. But if they did, it would be different than a straight person calling them that. I think if it had been two gay men and the term was Fagot instead of Lesbo the insensitivity would be more apparent.

The context it was used in this thread was derogatory. And many of the other comments in the thread fall into the same line.

As I said, it's disappointing and sad.

I think Iowans are making this out to be more of a story than it is in the rest of the country. I live in Minnesota and none of my gopher friends had even heard of this story at all. Another friend of mine, a lawyer and huge badger fan who lives in madison, hadn't heard this story at all either. I don't think anyone outside of Iowa cares about this news whatsoever.

That's why IMO Barta's job is safe. This isn't an issue that is gaining traction at all nationally and most of the outrage isn't really towards the university either, it seems more directed at the two women.

Not a lot of new insights in this thread. So, I'll throw one out there. Did the university get off easy? Or at least without it getting much worse?

I imagine that losing the Griesbaum case could have resulted in a much bigger judgment than this settlement. And that would have led to an even bigger settlement with Meyer.

Or the judgment could have included a reinstatement of Griesbaum's job. The repercussions of that decision would have lasted for years.

Now, the cases go away. OK, they never really go away. But the more and longer they are in the forefront, the worse for the university. If a judgment or settlement would have come during football season, it would have been much worse.

I meant to say that I agree with Rob's post. "Lesbos" and "old bigoted white men" are both ignorant and should be condemned.

Agree. There's a lot of stereotyping in this thread.

One group you mentioned is discriminated against a lot more than the other, however. But, you're right. Narrow-mindedness is a problem here.

The CRG talked the Meyer and Greisbaum:

“It’s not my decision if he keeps his job or not,” Meyer said of Barta. “But there are things in that department that have not been unraveled.”

I don't see Barta surviving this. I also see a "watering down" of the revenue generating sports at Iowa. What you will see is an acceleration down the path of mediocrity.

Oh? You mean our elite football program will fall from a 7-5 annual average to a 6-6 annual average. The Iowa brand will be crushed. Barta will no longer be able to hold back the dike.

Actually there has been quite a bit of discussion about the judgments. Yes, they should have settled. Yes, it could have been much worse because Meyers' lost wage award could have been tripled. Hard telling what could have happened if Griesbaum had gone to trial. Some folks seem to think there has not been much publicity about these cases nationally but that is not true. And none of it that I saw was positive. Can't wait til football season starts

Yes, there has been discussion about the judgments, but not with a tone of it being "good news" for the university in light of how much worse it could have been.

I posted my opinion that it could have been much worse, but a lot of people think the jury got it wrong. There seems to be a good number on this message board that think the plaintiffs caused their own problems or that the verdicts were wrong because Barta sucks at record keeping. Which he definitely does.

Must have missed your comment.

Winter certainly has arrived but who else thinks it will be a long one and far from over?

I think there is a separate thread for Game of Thrones references. I don't think the white walkers are going to make it this winter. This too shall pass.
