Iowa Settles & Pays $6.5 Million For Lawsuits

The CRG talked the Meyer and Greisbaum:

“It’s not my decision if he keeps his job or not,” Meyer said of Barta. “But there are things in that department that have not been unraveled.”

Interesting that the U of I admitted to no wrongdoing in the settlement. A technicality really, yet interesting.

I also think that Meyer and Griesbaum should quit while they're ahead.

Poll: What island do you think Greesbaum and Meyers are going to retire to?

Headline in the DM Register today says "Griesbaum on UI lawsuit: 'I tried to represent the coaching profession." The article also reports her noticing how other women coaches were being replaced. Wonder how much of the money she will share with them since she was "representing the coaching profession."

I'm afraid you don't speak for the rest of the board.
It's too bad because then we could have some rational and substantive discussions. Just to clarify for you, rational = based on logic or reason; substantive = having basis in reality, is meaningful and important.

She doesn't have to share anything with anybody. What Griesbaum is talking about is the decline in the number of female coaches and their replacement with male coaches. This is a matter of fact, not opinion. And plenty of others have noticed it, also. It is fine for men to coach women, but rarely the other way around. Whatever you think of this, it is fact.

And the eleven male coaches that Barta has fired so far...

I understand what she is saying. And while she won the settlement in a case that might have impact on other coaching situations (probably not that much), she is most certainly going to the bank personally. It would be admirable if she shared some of the settlement with the other coaches who she says experienced something similar to her.

I understand what you are saying. Hard to know what her future is,however. She may never be able to get a job in her chosen profession. It does sound like she is concerned about other women in the coaching profession so we will see if she becomes involved in efforts to support such women.

My questions:

What happens the next time Barta fires a female coach?

Can he manage them effectively moving forward?
Well, those are good questions. It could be argued that he doesn't manage anyone well. I could be wrong but I think most of the male coaches he has fired have had losing records. A female coach was much more likely to be terminated than a male percentage-wise under Barta sometimes for their behavior (swearing at athletes...etc)

The petition that Griesbaum filed details alleged different treatment. The lawsuit asks the university to create a "coaching methods handbook" to ensure coaches are judged by the same standards and to provide training on biases and stereotypes that impact female coaches' treatment. Wonder if something like this will happen. It appears Barta will keep his job so he definitely needs to improve because his current methods are questionable.

OKst, your post claimed that you spoke for the rest of the board about Dean's posts being allegedly too long. Unless you can produce a poll that shows each and every member of the board agrees with you on that sentiment, your post wasn't rational or substantive.

If said coaches have experienced similar discrimination then they should file their own lawsuits.

I got an idea...why don't you take a poll. But...if those poll numbers come back in a way I don't like I'll just call them alternative facts and assert that my initial point was correct. That's been pretty successful for some folks.
