Wirfs suspended one game

Wirffs was driving a scooter. Only he and the two numbnuts riding with him would have been damaged.

There was no crowd in Iowa City at 3am the could have been damaged by a swerving to miss the hypothetical M1A1 Abrams main battle tank or the butt-ugly cube-looking suv that may have been cruising through a green light.

If he were driving an actual vehicle then the punishment of 1-game suspension would have been light.

I’m surprised he didn’t get two games though. But it’s just stupid to say KF is being lazy by not giving a more severe penalty.

Yes, yes I do. I think extrapolating that a semi-sober 320 pound scooter rider going on a drunk driving spree and killing someone is bordering on the hysterical.
Every drunk driving death is murder. Wanna guess what the number one cause of death, other than disease, is for persons under 25 yrs of age?

I am not an apologist for drunk driving (a dangerous vehicle), it is bad, but if all of you are too stupid to see the difference in the Wirf's case and a real threat to the public safety then I can't help you. You can dream up doomsday scenarios all day long. I would argue that just about any 80 year old with a driver's license is a bigger menace to public safety than Wirfs on a scooter.

You are arguing that just a little bit of a felony is ok? The jail sentence could be up to a year. If you dont see how wrong you are, theres no point in arguing. You believe what you want to believe.

25+ years ago in the 20th century my wife and I were traveling home after visiting friends. It was a Friday night (Saturday 1AM to be precise) we were going up a decent size hill with a curve at the crest.

About 100’ from the crest I started pulling off the shoulder and my wife starts yelling, “What are you doing?!”

While she was yelling that at me a drunk in a pickup came speeding over the crest in our lane and weaved back to his lane as we were 4 wheels on the shoulder.

I have no idea how I pulled off to the shoulder before he even hit the crest of the hill. Must’ve been a God thing.

So I now have 5 kids that would not be on this earth if things would have been different,

I don’t take drunk driving lightly in the 21st century.

A drunk on his own two feet calling for a ride; a drunk on a scooter; a drunk in a pickup have one thing in common.

What is not in common is the amount of potential damage they can do to innocent people. That is what should determine severity of punishment.

Yes, let's see what the courts say.....I believe they have the ability to use some common sense and understand the shades of gray that some of you moral puritans fail to see. I say he gets community service at most.

Of course he will. That doesnt make it right. He will have a lawyer. If he went into court talking like you, he would serve one year. You call me whatever you want. In a poll or forum of responsible adults 90% say you are wrong. You fail to see the impairment part of the argument. If you are impaired and you cause an accident you are going to jail. If someone gets hurt in the accident you are staying longer. Someone dies, longer. If you are telling me he is no larger threat to society drunk on a scooter than a sober person walking down the street you need some education.

Ah, but as I mentioned before and I believe this to be true, he was not over the legal limit, he admitted that he was drinking and because he was under 21 it was automatically an OWI. And I believe that in a poll of responsible adults aware of the situation and circumstances you would be hard pressed to find few that would hold him to the same standard as some drunk climbing into a car. Were you the former female President of the University of Iowa?

Let me guess, you are a male 25 or under or developmentally challenged. Killer typing skills dude. Go get an education or find Jesus. Lol

Comma after 25, before the; or, old lady. Sorry if I offended you by mentioning that people over 80 shouldn't have a driver's license, perhaps you should buy a scooter.

again, go read some stories about some who have been killed because of a drunk driver. do you think my statement would be an over reaction to them?

Yes my Aunt and Uncle were taken 6 years ago by a drunk driver and your statements are still an over reaction. We don't punish people in this country for what other people have done before. A drunk driver is not guaranteed to get in an accident or kill anyone. It is only an increased risk. You know why they call driving a risk in the first place right? Because accidents happen and people die from them. Quite a lot it happens with out any alcohol involved at all.

P.S. The man who caused the accident that claimed the lives of my loved ones is still in prison and is an extremely remorseful individual. I as most of my family have forgiven him. At the end of the day he is still a person. He is not some monster. He made a grave mistake. He acted recklessly, but he didn't intend to murder anyone. He will be up for parole next year and I for one will write a letter to the parole board expressing my opinion that he should be allowed to resume and rebuild his life. No amount of destruction upon his life will ever heal the pain of our loss. In my eyes he has paid his penance.
