VanLaere: Iowa Basketball and the Postseason

So Ghost, I have a question for you.

If you hadn't read the names here could have listed (without looking them up) the BCS schools that have participated in past CBI tournaments?

Going to any post season tournament at this point is helpful for the players on the roster. The only way you turn that down us if participating somehow harms the reputation of the program as a whole. Anyone who thinks it will must have been in a coma the last 3 years.

Of course not. No one gives a half a damn about the CBI. Now that I do know who played in it, I think less of them.

Going to the CBI because you have had bad seasons is like an actress doing porn because it is the only work she can get acting.
Another stupid example on your part.

If Iowa goes to the CBI this year, it has no detrimental impact on their ability to be in the NCAA tourney next year. In fact, it could have some positive impact. OTOH, when an actress turns to porn, that has a huge detrimental impact on returning to a mainstream role later on.

You may claim otherwise, but I have yet to see a meaningful reason from you on why a CBI appearance would be bad for the team.

Of course not. No one gives a half a damn about the CBI. Now that I do know who played in it, I think less of them.

Then I ask - How shameful can it be if you don't even know who they are. You are correct, nobody gives sh*t except for the participants. But this is precisely why it is not shameful.

Let's look at this a different way. Oregon won the CBI last year, and they played against Weber St., Boise St., Duquesne, and Creighton. The RPI of those teams, last season, was respectively 148, 114, 123, and 108.

If we attach those sorry RPI numbers to this year, Iowa would be facing talented teams like Stony Brook, Indiana St, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Georgia.

The level of competition in the CBI is much, much lower than that of the Big 10. How will it benefit the team in the future to finish out the season playing lesser competition in a tournament no one cares about on a TV network broadcasting to 17% of the homes in the country?

You serious or was this sarcasm? It is rare you see football players pass on a bowl game. Given the choice I am sure the basketball players would love the opportunity to play any of the post season tournaments.

I am serious. Football players aren't usually given a choice. Sometimes, but not usually. They typically prefer to be done for the season, unless it is a decent bowl and in an attractive location.

Again, what makes playing in these tournaments so shameful? I have read through your posts, do don't make me do it again. All I see for a reason is cat poop pizza and cheap hookers. You say they do not need the extra practice time even though this team is full of freshman and sophomores. Can you see the value in the extra game experience along with the experience of playing in a 2nd tournament? Perhaps next year Iowa makes the NCAA tournament, is there any chance playing in the CBI/CIT helps?

ah ha now i know why ghost want to stay home, he`s tired of catpoop pizza and cheap whores. say no more i understand your reasoning.

I don't know what you're trying to prove by restating that PAC and Big East teams have gone. If they want to embarrass themselves, fine by me. It doesn't make me want to watch me team embarrass themselves.

Going to the CBI because you have had bad seasons is like an actress doing porn because it is the only work she can get acting.

Comparing a post BB tourney to the porn industry may be the dumbest analogy I have read on this site in the past 2 yrs. If Fran thinks the tourney will help the program than I am all for it,

You're right, the porn industry makes money. Hey-oooo! I'm here all week fellas.

No, I want the team to stay at home because I think it is bad for the program (others), while people want to do something bad for the program to reward one guy.

That's the opposite of selfish.

I believe it was David Lee Roth who said "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one".[/QUOTE]

You're so wrong about this, and I can't believe no one's corrected you. I couldn't find a website that said he said this. I've always attributed it to Mr. Spock. I don't know what HE thinks about basketball though.

This quote by DLR however, is kind of catchy....
"There are three rings to marriage: the engagement ring, the wedding ring and the suffering"

The analogy is solid bro. The CBI is the lowest of the low. It is where you go after after the best 108 teams are taken in front of you. It was won by a team that went in with a losing record last year.

It is straight up basketball porn.

As far as the CBI and the CTI or CIT or whatever the hell it is, I am pretty sure that the Big 12 discourages its teams from participating in the tournaments. Iowa State was obviously eligible for this last year at 16-16 and would have likely been a good team to pick and they didn't go.

Have any Big 10 teams been to these tournaments? If not, maybe they are not allowed to go. It is a money losing proposition, I think.

In general, I am for more basketball whenever possible, so I would have happily attended any games I could if Iowa State had went. And Diante Garrett was JUST as loyal to Iowa State as Gatens appears to have been.

Maybe next year both teams will be close to a lock for the NCAA tournament with 2 games left instead of just Iowa State this year.

Nothing like not reading the thread and asking a question that has already been answered. Nice work.
