VanLaere: Iowa Basketball and the Postseason

So does that mean that I'm part of the joke because I got it or cause I didn't get it or no one else cared enough about your BS quote to look it up? Or just that I'm a nerd and knew that Mr. Spock said that.

Aren't jokes supposed to be funny?

Ghost is a wannabe hipster, he's against anything that most people like. Accept this and move on, there's no use trying to reason with a man in skinny jeans and a mustache.

Wow, nailed it. Just because I don't want to see my team thrown in a tournament Iowa State thinks they're too good for, I hate everything.

Do you know what an analogy is?

yes, a comparison between two things that are similar in some way, often used to help explain something or make it easier to understand and I still think comparing porn to a post basketball tourney is stupid and wrong.

Well if that's what you think an analogy is, no wonder you think it's bad.

I don't know what you're trying to prove by restating that PAC and Big East teams have gone. If they want to embarrass themselves, fine by me. It doesn't make me want to watch me team embarrass themselves.

Going to the CBI because you have had bad seasons is like an actress doing porn because it is the only work she can get acting.

Because those teams didn't embarrass themselves.

No one thinks less of Oregon, Stanford, Cincinnati basketball because they went to the CBI.

Do you honestly think people sit and talk about those programs today and say, "well, I did respect at program, but, geez, they went to the CBI, I can't take them serious." No.

You are on a high horse, that's the bottom line.

Also, your analogies are suffering, bro.

Let's look at this a different way. Oregon won the CBI last year, and they played against Weber St., Boise St., Duquesne, and Creighton. The RPI of those teams, last season, was respectively 148, 114, 123, and 108.

If we attach those sorry RPI numbers to this year, Iowa would be facing talented teams like Stony Brook, Indiana St, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Georgia.

The level of competition in the CBI is much, much lower than that of the Big 10. How will it benefit the team in the future to finish out the season playing lesser competition in a tournament no one cares about on a TV network broadcasting to 17% of the homes in the country?

And this year Oregon is a 20 win school.
Creighton is a 25 win school.

I guess somehow it was "bad" for those programs, right?

If Iowa goes to the CBI this year, it has no detrimental impact on their ability to be in the NCAA tourney next year. In fact, it could have some positive impact. OTOH, when an actress turns to porn, that has a huge detrimental impact on returning to a mainstream role later on.

You may claim otherwise, but I have yet to see a meaningful reason from you on why a CBI appearance would be bad for the team.

Then I ask - How shameful can it be if you don't even know who they are. You are correct, nobody gives sh*t except for the participants. But this is precisely why it is not shameful.

Exactly.

The analogy is solid bro. The CBI is the lowest of the low. It is where you go after after the best 108 teams are taken in front of you. It was won by a team that went in with a losing record last year.

It is straight up basketball porn.

False.
The CIT is lower than the CBI.

Correlation does not imply causation. Oregon State won the CBI and then won 14 games the next year.

Yes, it is bad to pick up the scraps after being passed over for 108 more deserving teams. Imagine the reaction here if Iowa State were on the cusp of a CBI berth. The mocking would be merciless, and rightfully so.

Again, your pride is so thick it's covering your every word.

Baby steps for a program that just came out of the dark ages.

Nothing "bad" is going to happen to Iowa by accepting the bid unless someone suffers a career-ending injury.

You are worried about Iowa's image here. That's all relative and pointless.

Hipsters just like to be difficult. That's why they drink PBR even though no one actually likes it.

Seeing Iowa in the CBI does not exactly give me a woody.

It isn't about me.

If the basketball team, athletic department and school (with the blessing of the B1G) believes that participating in the CBI is in their best interest then that is what they will do (assuming they get an invite).

If they do participate I will be cheering them on.

My pride? I am not worried about my pride. Hell, I predicted the team would lose their last 6 games before the Penn St. game, so I am not worried about pride. Obviously I am not a guy with unrealistic expectations.

I don't care how bad things were before, I don't care how dark the ages were. This isn't about having too much pride, this is about hanging onto a scrap of pride. There is no pride in going to the CBI. If Iowa St. or Nebraska, or Illinois, or any of our rivals were playing in the CBI, we would make fun of them.

I have no interest in being a punchline.

I do love PBR. Miller Lite is, like, so main stream dude. You want to come over to my urban loft later? I don't have a TV, so I was planning on listening to Florence + the Machine on vinyl and then discussing "Gravity's Rainbow" with some other doctoral candidates.

I hope to God that a basketball program would never make any kind of decision based on the level of mockery received on a message board.

Still waiting for you to provide a reason why it would be bad for the team to play in the CBI.
