VanLaere: Iowa Basketball and the Postseason

Looks like the CBI is the most likely landing spot. They have taken teams under .500 before too, so if we fail to win one of our last 2 games, we could still qualify. Oregon State went in 2009 with a 13-17 record and made it to the finals.

Also, several of the games are televised by HD Net, which is a channel I get (and in HD of course) versus the CIT which is televised by crappy standard def Fox College Sports (FCS), which Dish doesn't offer.

Iowa is locked into the CBI, in my opinion.

No, that's the opposite of selfish.

You do know what selfish means right?

Thinking about yourself before others.

You'd rather have the team sit at home because you (as a fan) think it's beneath the program instead of giving something back to someone (Gatens).

That's selfish.

It isn't that I necessarily think Iowa fans should be above it, it's that I think college basketball fans should be above it.

I don't know that it is a given that most players want to participate anyway. I do know that most football players prefer the season end than practice for several more weeks and attend a fourth tier bowl in an obscure location.

I won't argue with this thought process. I understand what you mean. It's like the competitions that give out participation ribbons to everyone and there are no winners. I get that mindset. I won't berate you for that.

I, personally, just think this program needs something in regards to a postseason berth, whatever it may be. Who knows, the NIT might be closer than we think.

This surprises you?

Come on spank, you've known ghost longer than I have. Well, online anyway. :D

No, I want the team to stay at home because I think it is bad for the program (others), while people want to do something bad for the program to reward one guy.

That's the opposite of selfish.

I believe it was David Lee Roth who said "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one".

What exactly is bad for the program? The extra playing time? Exposure? A chance to win a championship?

I would love to know the downside.

I'm still waiting for reasons why this is bad for the program.

If Iowa accepts the CBI bid, do they:
- lose scholarships?
- have to pay $1M to other schools?
- lose eligibility for players?

No. Nothing "bad" happens to the program.

The only repercussions of playing in the CBI are more practice time, a chance to play in the postseason, further the development of the team, a chance for the nation to see Iowa on TV (albeit HDNET) - more exposure.

You're acting like the dude in high school that won't go out with the average looking lady because she's not hot enough. But when you've struck out your entire high school career, that average looking lady could turn out to be the best thing that happened to you. You are too worried about what other people will think instead of taking what's in front of you.

Wow, you just don't give up!

It would be insane for Iowa not to pursue a post-season tournament. They will play in the post-season if they get the opportunity.

If it doesn't excite you or interest you, don't watch. Frankly, watching Iowa play in a minor post-season basketball tournament is a heck of a lot more interesting than most of the stuff posted on this message board (including most, if not all, of my posts).

I have a hunch that if you polled the players and coaches they would vote to play in ANY post-season tournament.

Also, Gatens isn't the only senior on this team. I believe that all of the seniors would like to keep playing....

It's ******* Nebraska. They are going down.

I don't care if those teams sacrificed their dignity to lose in a crappy tournament. We're too good for it.

Let Matt Gatens go out on top, on senior day, in front of his fans with a big conference win in a full house. Let the young players get experience in the PTL instead of wasting their time playing the fifth place team from the Atlantic 10.

If Fran doesn't have the sense to stay out of this crap, I hope the league refuses to let him.

artis gilmore play at jacksonville university come on! it doesnt mean iowa are above ju. what s wrong with cbi?

i enjoy watching basketball at those school like jacksonville university and stetson university as much as i like to watch iowa. they`re in same conference as western kentucky

The extra playing time? What difference will that make? They will have played at least 32 games, what difference will a few more make? You really think Zach McCabe is going to put it together while playing a tough game against Louisiana Tech?

The exposure? Are you serious? There is no exposure for the CBI! You get mocked for going to the CBI. You don't go into recruits living rooms and brag about your CBI trophy.

The chance to win a championship? This is a Big 10 basketball program. A win in the CBI finals will be the 5th biggest win this season. Going .500 in the conference is a greater accomplishment than winning that garbage championship.

how is ghost a bigger advocate of ptl than cbi? the hole reason these other tournaments are catching interest is the new auto bid rules for nit. so while nit has history there has been a move of bigger conference teams going to cbi.

You're acting like the guy who is so hard up for some action, that after striking out at the bar over and over, gets drunk and hires a nasty hooker. And yes, the CBI is like a hooker because you have to pay them, they don't give it away for free.

but the positive far outweigh the negatives,
more playing and practice time
the possibility of actually winning
and end on a high note of going into next fall with a winning streak

it is like those so called meaningless bowl games, this also lets the staff use the games to get players like Olaseni playing time, and it lets Oglesby get more comfortable in his role as a top notch shooter
Iowa is 4-3 against top 25 teams and i don't think they will face many if any top 15 teams in any of the tourneys outside the BD.
right now the BD is still in the picture if Iowa goes 4-0 in the BTT and other than Indiana it will be away games for eveyrone, the next is the NIT, which looks like a real possibilty unless there are alot of the lower level conference champions get knocked out, then the chances go down, but i am not so sure a 7th place BTT would get passed over, then it will be down to the other 2, right now the NIT is looking real good, but i will hope for a 4 game sweep in the BTT, then who knows maybe 1 win in the Dance,
