One of Top Recruiting Classes in Kirk Ferentz Era

Iowa's goal is to compete and win the B1G every year. I have heard KF say that many times that this is the goal each and every year.

We just have a different definition of sub par then. If you think 8 wins is sub par, there is absolutely NO REASON you should be happy with this program. KF over the last 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, heck 17 years has averaged just over 8 wins a year. That puts Iowa right about #20 in wins of all P5 teams over that time period. If averaging just over 8 wins a year means you are around #20 of all P5 teams in wins over that time, I personally can't consider that sub par. To each their own though, if that is sub par to you then I'm not going to be able to convince you otherwise.
And I suspect I won’t be able to convince you otherwise as well. If you’re happy with the results, more power to you.

I’ll end with this. Look at those conference standings. Let’s look at Iowa’s conference standings since the B1G expanded. I’ll even give them the benefit of not counting anything against ties.

2011- 4
2012 - 6
2013 - 4
2014 - 4
2015 - 1
2016 - 2
2017 - 4

Average - 3.57

So on average we finish between 3rd and 4th in our respective division. To me that screams average.

Since KF turned the Iowa program back around in 2001, there are only 23 P5 programs in the United States with a better winning % (17 years).

In the last 10 years, it's the same....only 23 P5 teams with a better winning %.

In the last 5, we're at 18 P5 teams with a better %.

I've mentioned this before....I know tribalism in today's world dictates that 2 things cannot simultaneously be right....but that's bullshit. It can be said that KF has had an unbelievable run of overall consistency in his tenure here that always has us one of the Top 25 winningest teams (with sprinkles of outstanding seasons), while at the same time, admitting that had we been more aggressive with some of the "lesser" teams, we could probably have had even better results over the last 19 years.

And talk about cherry picking....Why use 8? If you use an even number of 10, we have 3 9-win season in the last 10.
Talk about Cherry picking. How many over the last 10 years? How many since KF got here?
Correct, I already mentioned the 8 years being a cherry picked number.

Okay let’s try 10. We’ve had 3 9+ win seasons. I’d have to check the numbers but our average finish in the B1G overall is likely 5th if not worse. Again to me, very underwhelming.

I don't think an 8 win season is garbage, but it is kind of the floor, don't you think?
12÷ 8 is a nasty number, so round up and your at 67%,
However...
3 of those are non cons and face it, we are not playing Alabama, Oklahoma or USC in those, so they should be wins imho. But some will argue that, so throw those out completely. Then you have 5 ÷ 9 and you are at about 56%,
Just over half of the conference games isn't exactly anything special.
I like the way it's all headed, but let's not fool ourselves 8 wins is the floor.

Since the B1G expanded, Iowa on average finishes in 3.5 place in their respective division. They play in the much weaker division.

My goal is to compete for the B1G West title year in and year out. They won’t win it every year or even most years, but that should be the goal. They haven’t been close to that level recently.

To stay on point with this thread, I’ve been very happy with the recruiting in the recent cycles so maybe we can get there.

Exactly. Hey you have to have a base, a starting point or a floor before you can improve.

Yeah, 8 wins isn't garbage, but it's not much to get excited about, either.

Being more aggressive with those lesser teams puts us on par with a team like Wisky without recruiting being any different than it is.

If winning 9 games a year is easy, how come the following OSU, Wisconsin and MSU are the only B1G schools to average 9 wins a year over the last 5 years? Iowa and Penn St. are next at 43 wins over the last 5 years and Michigan has 40.

There are only 14 P5 teams who have averaged 9 wins or more over the last 5 years. Iowa is 2 wins away from averaging 9 wins a year over the last 5.

One thing I think that had been noticeable in the last year was we put the boots to teams when we could, examples Ohio State and Nebraska rather than letting up when the game was well out of hand. The last two Nebraska games especially. There was no letting off. Seems new to me. And all the going for it on 4th downs that started 2 or so years ago.

They'd probably argue all those other coaches should be fired. Only one team wins it all every year, so I guess all the rest of those guys are complete failures.

And for those who look up to the MSU program and Dantonio and the way he operates, I don't agree. His 9 win seasons are not the way to do it in my opinion.

Agreed, what has gone on at MSU is shameful. Just look at what MSU and Baylor stooped to in order to get into the 9+ wins a year club. I'm sure there are plenty of idiots on here that would take that trade off those, but I am certainly not one of them.

How many teams would be 2 wins away? 20? You mention PSU and UM. They haven't had the same coach. They were in turmoil. Iowa is about 34th in overall ranking with a few non p5 teams above us.

How many teams have Iowa's stability and do so poorly? Interesting question.

Putting the MSU football team on par with Baylor at this point is premature unless you want to look closely at past Iowa dealings. MSU may be just as bad or worse than Baylor but we don't know that yet.

Not only the assaults covered up but the stuff he lets players get away with beyond that and still plays them. Probably no other Big Ten team I dislike more than MSU.

Since 2013 (the last 5 years) Iowa has 43 wins which puts them at 19th most wins of all P5 teams. Just above them at 44 and 45 wins (so these are part of the 19 teams better than them). Oregon, Auburn, TCU, LSU.

Just behind Iowa at 42 and 41 wins are: Miami, Notre Dame, Miss. St., and VaTech. Nobody else has more than 40 wins.

So only 23 teams have averaged more than 8 wins per year over the last 5 years, and Iowa is one of them. Iowa has the 19th most wins over the last 5 years of all P5 teams. Yet some argue we suck because we have "only" won 8 games a year.
