One of Top Recruiting Classes in Kirk Ferentz Era

I'm not ready to throw Brian on the scrap heap. I saw some decent things out of the Iowa offense last fall to say it's not hopeless. However, I do expect to see big strides this fall on offense, not a hope, an expectation. As fans, we're entitled to that.

I am hoping I saw some improvement from BF over the season to expect to see the hawks scoring at least 3 to 6 more points a game be less variant in scoring.

I really liked how he used the TEnds. The TD throw to Fant in the Pinstripe bowl was a great call as it was a counter type pass route. You might remember how Fant lined up in the backfield on the left and snuck out to the right as the play action run went left. Fant was wide open.

Any type of counter action by the offense is needed and should be useful.

I was just wondering how the overall recruiting went and then this post. Thanks. It is good to see some top level recruits.

Tell me, what kind of wide receiver recruits did we get? Any that might help this year?

Said it before and I'll say it again...

Iowa consistently puts out NFL-caliber players, many of them immediate or eventual starters, and several Pro Bowlers.

But until Daddy and Baby 'Rentz put together a scheme that can use those players to win games we're going to mired in 6-6, bottom half of the conference football. Without Jewell and Jackson this year and King and Jewell before that (each a pro-level guy), we'd be more in the range of 4-8, 3-9.

Talent isn't the Hawkeyes' problem, guys. It's play calling. Our defense is usually top notch and saves otherwise unwinnable games because Parker is a competent, football-minded coach who does what he does based on the science of the game and ADAPTS to the players he has on the field at any given time, as well as the team he's playing.

In contrast, the 'Rentzes speak psycho-babble like "That's football," and "Next man in," and keep running a 190 lb RB into 1,200 lbs of defensive linemen over and over, followed up with a 3 yd out route on 3rd and 7 because by god...that's the way we play football here.

Watch this... ,

and then this...,

and tell me who's a football coach, and who's a wannabe who drank too much of dad's kool aid last year.
If Parker were to somehow become the next head coach, I think it would be very interesting to see who and what he would bring in for his offensive staff.

I see a lot of potential in this class. Unfortunately most of them won't make an impact until they are Juniors. If they last that long.

Little concerned though, only saw a couple of good linemen prospects. Some good defensive linemen, line backers, defensive backfield. QB recruit from Cal should be interesting to watch.

I can't stand DiNardo. He thinks Frost will just turn Nebraska into the Bama of the Midwest overnight huh? Well I'll say this I'll be pretty impressed if anything close to that happens. I think he's done pretty good right out of the gate and he's got some momentum going the right direction as of now. But cart ahead of the horse. That D of there's was pretty pitiful and turning that around enough to be winning games will be tough. Let alone league titles and more...

Yup. Right on with this. How many coaches have landed in a new job and have been hailed as the new savior of the program? Now, how many have actually done that? At ISU? At Michigan? At Notre Damn? Could note quite a few more, but my arms are getting tired.

The ranking of the class doesn't matter much, unless you have a roster full of 4 and 5 star players like Ohio State. Iowa develops kids that work hard. Some of Iowa's best players weren't that highly recruited.

I'd argue Jenkins is criminally underrated. He was one of those guys who commits early and never waivers, so few teams bothered to look his way. If we get 20 lbs on him between now and August, I think he could fight for playing time inside. Plumb I'd need to watch more film of, but goddamn does his frame have a lot of potential. Can you imagine a 6'8" 330lb tackle?

I don't hold much on what the BTN prognosticators say about anything. Much less Nebraska. They have their fav's and promote them only to get proved wrong every year.

Yes I like the potential there along with the transfer from Alabama JC. 305 pounds on the inside can be good help immediately. And the DE recruit from Des Moines Dowling (cant rem his name) looks like he could be an early starter.

It seems that when Iowa gets these guys above 300 they really make an impact. 330 pounds might be optimistic, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Agreed. I think at least one, if not two of the group of Craddieth/Johnson/Brents/Roberts plays meaningful snaps this season, and I think McDonald and Doyle both play special teams this year, with the former having a better shot at meaningful snaps as well.

Doyle is starting come August. Take it to the bank.

I think I'd like him to stay at 300. At 6'4", I don't know if he has the frame to add another 300 pounds without keeping that quickness that makes him such an exciting prospect.

That'd be one hell of a feel-good story... until someone starts to bring nepotism into it again.

Look, I get your angle with your post. You think I'm full of shit and don't like my posts, and I'm fine with that. You hate it anytime someone dogs on the Hawkeye coaching staff and AD and you'd jump off a bridge if Kirk said it was the best thing for the Iowa football program. You're the definition of a homer fan and it's because of those types that we have the idiocy we do in office at the athletic department.

But if you're going to say "Brian sounds a lot like Parker did six or seven years ago" then wouldn't you at least support it with something? Because I've been watching the pressers since before he was DC and I can tell you the guy has more football smarts in his pinkie toe than Brian will ever have. He's been a paid football coach for 30 years and and was 1st team all B1G 3 times.

Look back on any interviews or pressers from back then and you'll see that he actually talks specifics about schemes and gameplay. Not a bunch of vague, "Fed speak" that you get from Brian to try and cover up that he's way in over his head.

This is 7-8 years ago like you wanted.

I love me some Phil Parker don't get me wrong, but that wasn't exactly a big x's and o's talk. Maybe a little more chatty then your typical Ferentz coach speak, but there were no epiphanies had.

Yup. Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Rugumba/Hankins/Ojumedia didn't exactly set the world on fire it'll be quite a battle for both of those starting corner spots I bet. May the best men win.
LB should be quite the battle too. But I do think the upperclassman will have the upper hands at em. At least more so than the DBs. But we'll see. I doubt spring ball will give us many answers but it'll be the beginning of finding out.

I expect that Rugumba and Hankins will be starters, but one of the freshman DB's will probably grab the spot for the 5th DB formations. Wouldn't be suprised to see Craddieth starting at one of the saftey spots either.

Little Doyle'y has been running Iowa drills and working out with the team every summer since his freshman year of high school. He has seen most every Iowa game for a decade. He has watched tape with his dad for several years. The kid is about as up to speed as a Sophomore. Plus he is here a semester early and will get the summer camp that alot of incoming freshman won't. He will be ready. I believe he has the skills to shine and I doubt anyone will care about "nepotism".

He will have actually played the position already unlike other perceived nepotism within the program. Had Doyle been a special teams player and then made a starter at LB it would be nepotism.
