Yeah, I'd put the 2016 Rose Bowl and the recent loss to the Maize & Blue in the BTen title game as the two worst -- because they were the two largest stages.

I would like to nominate the 2023 Minnesota loss when the refs took away Cooper Dejean's game winning punt return due to an invalid fair catch.

I know there's a lot of folks who won't agree depending on the definition of "worst losses," but by far and away the worst lost in the last ten years and the one that hurt me the most in the entire Fry/Ferentz era was Michigan State in '15.

Not even anything close to that one.

So fucking accurate. It would have been nice to win the Rose Bowl, but after the opening kickoff, that wasn't even a game. McCaffrey probably just scored another touchdown.

The Big Ten Title Game had so much juice. Would have been our first outright conference title in a couple generations, first playoff birth, undefeated season. And, it was a great game and came down to the last minute and we lost by a half a yard play that could have gone either way. That was the worst loss in my life time.

I try to tell myself we shouldn't have been in that position to begin with against Minnesota to need a game-winning return, but it never helps.

That was the first one that came to my mind as well.

Ugh. I agree. I was at that game, and I felt like I was punched in the gut as I left the stadium.

Clones 2024, Clones 2022. No excuse

100%
So much on the line.

I was there.
Never been so distraught.

I've never watched a replay.

Bend but don't break is always anxiety inducing. When it breaks, it's angrifying.
Heartbreak lasts forever. But can be erased the very next season.

This one really hurts because we can't point to a B10 Championship where every Hawk fan who was alive at the time is still unable to legally purchase alcohol.

(Going off Fryowa's Kirk/Hayden time period)...

I think I'd call them most painful losses.

These two are above the rest in my opinion. 2015 Michigan State and 2009 Ohio State.

Both came down to the wire. One play breaks a different way and Iowa is Big Ten Champs.

The only other one I can think of that's close is the 1986 Rose Bowl. Iowa had such a magical year. And even had an outside chance at the national title going into that game (think of that, Jan 1 and still a shot 60 minutes away from a NATIONAL TITLE!).

At worst, Iowa was going to easily roll an over-matched UCLA team, Chuck Long was going to show he was the real Heisman winner and not Bo Jackson, the team would finish 11-1, Big Ten champs, ROSE BOWL champs, the only loss at Ohio State and probably finish #2 in the country.

Instead they couldn't tackle a freshman running back and Ronnie Harmon kept putting the ball on the ground.

Jesus, that '86 Rose Bowl might be the worst one the more I think about it. There was more on the line than we often remember.

2002 ISU loss at Kinnick sucked and cost us a chance for a NC

I was at the 2009 OSU game where Ferentz sat on the ball at the end of regulation.
We had the momentum. OSU knew it. The Shoe crowd knew it. KF apparently didn't.
I was truly mad after.
