One of Top Recruiting Classes in Kirk Ferentz Era

Look, I get your angle with your post. You think I'm full of shit and don't like my posts, and I'm fine with that. You hate it anytime someone dogs on the Hawkeye coaching staff and AD and you'd jump off a bridge if Kirk said it was the best thing for the Iowa football program. You're the definition of a homer fan and it's because of those types that we have the idiocy we do in office at the athletic department.

But if you're going to say "Brian sounds a lot like Parker did six or seven years ago" then wouldn't you at least support it with something? Because I've been watching the pressers since before he was DC and I can tell you the guy has more football smarts in his pinkie toe than Brian will ever have. He's been a paid football coach for 30 years and and was 1st team all B1G 3 times.

Look back on any interviews or pressers from back then and you'll see that he actually talks specifics about schemes and gameplay. Not a bunch of vague, "Fed speak" that you get from Brian to try and cover up that he's way in over his head.

This is 7-8 years ago like you wanted.

At this point, brian is a good coach and OC because we've been told he is. there is only a small sampling of a track record at Iowa, as of yet. The OL's under brian were average for long periods and has real struggles. OC last season was average, at best. Phil has turned out a dozen NFL'ers....at DB from Iowa. Think about that. Which OL'ers did brian turn into NFL'ers where brian was their OL coach from day one? I believe that was for 4 years. I'll give him credit for Blythe and Donnal. Daniels and Walsh, but brian wasn't OL coach last season.

Said it before and I'll say it again...

Iowa consistently puts out NFL-caliber players, many of them immediate or eventual starters, and several Pro Bowlers.

But until Daddy and Baby 'Rentz put together a scheme that can use those players to win games we're going to mired in 6-6, bottom half of the conference football. Without Jewell and Jackson this year and King and Jewell before that (each a pro-level guy), we'd be more in the range of 4-8, 3-9.

Talent isn't the Hawkeyes' problem, guys. It's play calling. Our defense is usually top notch and saves otherwise unwinnable games because Parker is a competent, football-minded coach who does what he does based on the science of the game and ADAPTS to the players he has on the field at any given time, as well as the team he's playing.

In contrast, the 'Rentzes speak psycho-babble like "That's football," and "Next man in," and keep running a 190 lb RB into 1,200 lbs of defensive linemen over and over, followed up with a 3 yd out route on 3rd and 7 because by god...that's the way we play football here.

Watch this... ,

and then this...,

and tell me who's a football coach, and who's a wannabe who drank too much of dad's kool aid last year.

Really. You think we have NFL caliber players at every position and the blame is all Ferentz? The issue isn't play calling...it's that we have 4-6 NFL players out of 22 starting...not the 12-14 NFL players the top teams in the conference have (guys who stick with teams). We need to be better at all positions...(think 2009 defense). Ohio State, Michigan and others have put a huge number of players into the NFL lately. We are weak at several positions...thats our issue...not play calling. We get one on one match-ups all day long on the outside and we can't win those battles or make plays at WR. Problem #1...fix that and you will be surprised how much better our offense looks.

I will tell you right now though...you have some serious talent on the offensive side of the ball that is just growing up. Wirfs / Jackson / Fant all have a chance to be first round picks. Hockenson and Stanley are also going to play in the NFL. I also think Toren Young and IKM are going to make a run. There are some really good young offensive linemen coming up too. We just need a playmaker to emerge on the outside.

On defense...we have some holes to fill, but our defensive line could be special this year...that makes your whole defense better...and can hide some youth.

Once again...if you want to blame Ferentz for the recruiting not being good enough...I'll hear that argument...cause I agree. That being said...it's improved the last three years.

Curious who told you that. Someone on the staff?

I don't know anyone on the paid staff on a personal level. There are however hundreds of other people in Iowa City that have direct knowledge of certain Iowa football happenings. Rugumba being a leader is what I heard and so it is what I believe.

I'd believe that. While manny struggled at times, be also had the same struggle Mabin had before him...he was opposite an absolute stud that every team threw away from. If he works, I think we'll see solid play from manny.

Sophomore slump is a very real thing at all levels of football for multiple year starters. Mabin and King both went through it. Manny has the physical tools and one hell of a good teacher in PP, and has the luxury of a lot more experience that the rest of the CB group. I'm confident he'll bounce back this season.

I clearly said you are right to complain. But knowing what I know about the culture of the school, I seriously doubt the next person will be someone to celebrate.
Which is why fans should stop supporting it. There's no such thing as half pregnant. Attempt to get the very best coaches out there or sack this shit and play intermural sports. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

Speaking of fresh gig's, you need one in the worst possible way. It was cool 3 years ago to bitch endlessly about KF after the '14 season. Heck I was right there with you. Freshen up your act though, as 3 years later we have 28 wins in those 3 years which is tied for 12 best of all P5 teams.

Wisconsin was 9-36 the four years before Alvarez was hired. There's a slight difference in circumstances in that situation. Their AD should have been fired if he DIDN'T change coaches.

I don't care if you hate Ferentz. Just come up with a little better rationale for firing him.
First of all I don’t hate Kirk Ferentz, I just think that his huge gauaranteed contracts (hmm...Barta, maybe?) make him unaccountable and that his “definition of insanity” offense strangles the Hawkeye football team.

Second, I don’t think he should be fired (not sure how the hell you came up with that???) because there isn’t anyone available who’s proven they can do better.

Stop dancing around the point, which is that that Barta is a huge shit stain who’s bleeding the university dry.

I take it you’re one of the rubes who doesn’t care about winning percentages as long as the graduation rates are high, and could care less if Ferentz wins because he’s turning those boys into fine nice young men?

That’s such a cherry picked stat though. We had an anamoly season where we had an extremely easy schedule and won 12 games. Since then two very mediocre seasons. Playing in the B1G west and having soft non-conference schedules also help.

I'll agree with that. These past two seasons we've had 8 wins each but it doesn't feel too good. In 2016 the loss to North Dakota State. The rest of that season we were lost. This past season while not much was to be expected, we played as the ultimate jekyll and hyde team of the year.

I guess 28 wins is a lot in 3 years. But it just doesn't feel like it.

Not Cherry picked at all. Did we or did we not win 12 games 3 years ago? So over the last 2 years we have averaged 8 wins a year. Over the last 3 we have averaged 9 wins a year. Over the last 5 we have averaged 8.6 Wins per year .

No matter how you cut it pretty much KF as averaged between 8-9 wins per year over the last 2, 3, 5, and 10 years. So that ain't Cherry picking, that is what it is.

Perfection? Did you see how bad our offense was? Did you see the final offensive rankings? Brian has no business being our OC, none.

And when it clicks you will change your username or use one of the 5 you have and say how great BF was and it was the greatest move ever to put him at OC.

It is a cherry picked stat because you chose three years and then say we have the 12th most wins if any team in the country. Choose 2 or 4 years and my guess is that number would drop a good amount.

I mean do you really feel like Iowa is even a top 20 football program in recent years? How many weeks have we been ranked? Do you consider our last two seasons successes?

I would say not really. The 12-0 season was a nice run, but we were exposed at the end of that season for what we really were, which was a solid team that took advantage of an extremely weak schedule.

I can probably be accused for cherry picking as well here but I’ll give you a list and you tell me if this screams of success.

2010- 8-5 (T-4 B1G) (W - Insight)
2011- 7-6 (4 Leaders) (L - Insight)
2012- 4-8 (6 Leaders) (No Bowl)
2013- 8-5 (T-4 Leaders) (L - Outback)
2014- 7-6 (4 West) (L - TaxSlayer)
2015- 12-2 (1 West) (L- Rose)
2016 - 8-5 (T-2 West) (L - Outback)
2017 - 8-5 (4 West) (W - Pinstripe)

Do you see how winning 8 games isn’t all that impressive? The bowl selection committees certainly do, judging by all the crummy bowls we’ve been picked for. Winning 8 games and finishing 4th in your division and then losing at a crappy bowl sure doesn’t seem too impressive to me.

Our 2 year average is 8 wins, our 4 year average wins is 8.75.

It always cracks me up when Iowa fans bash the 12 win season. You think Wisconsin is mocking their season this year because they played an extremely easy schedule?

You say winning 8 games a season ISN'T impressive, that just shows you really have no clue what other teams are winning. Since the crappy 2012 season, Iowa has won 43 games in the last 5 years. That is 8.6 Wins per year, and only 18 teams have won more games over the last 5 years. Iowa has won 28 games over the last 3 years which is tied for the 12th most wins of all P5 teams. It is what it is, even if you don't understand how that stacks up vs other P5 schools.

Well UW won their Bowl game as opposed to getting steamrolled like Iowa did in the Rose.

How did I bash the 12 win season?

In my opinion winning 8 games is not that impressive. You’re given 3 freebies so you basically have to go .500 in league play. Also the B1G West is garbage.

I listed out the results, here our the seasons I would consider sub-par over the last 8 years.

2010- 8-5 (T-4 B1G) (W - Insight)
2011- 7-6 (4 Leaders) (L - Insight)
2012- 4-8 (6 Leaders) (No Bowl)

7 of the last 8 years we’ve won 8 games or less and played in a crummy bowl. If you consider that success, that’s great, I think Iowa’s goal should be to compete to win the West every year, which they haven’t really done at all.

Numbers have a funny way of painting different pictures. Again I’ll ask, do you really feel Iowa is a top 20 football team over the recent years?

I don't have the stats right in front of me, but someone recently posted the list of schools that had won 9 or more games each of the last 5 years. It was a small list....something like less than 10 teams in the entire country. The point being that we fans bitch as if 9 win seasons should be a birthright or something, when in reality, there are literally less than 10 fanbases that can claim a virtual birthright to 9 wins every single season. Given that, the 8 win seasons in 4 out of the last 5 years is actually pretty darn good....

Iowa's goal is to compete and win the B1G every year. I have heard KF say that many times that this is the goal each and every year.

We just have a different definition of sub par then. If you think 8 wins is sub par, there is absolutely NO REASON you should be happy with this program. KF over the last 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, heck 17 years has averaged just over 8 wins a year. That puts Iowa right about #20 in wins of all P5 teams over that time period. If averaging just over 8 wins a year means you are around #20 of all P5 teams in wins over that time, I personally can't consider that sub par. To each their own though, if that is sub par to you then I'm not going to be able to convince you otherwise.

It was even crazier than that. I think Iowa was one of only like 10-15 teams that had won at least 8 games in 4 of the last 5 years or something like that.

Here is the big difference. We’ve only won 9 or more games once over the last 8 years!
