**OFFICIAL CUBS REGULAR SEASON THREAD**

Cardenas getting the start today in LF. Very "small" lineup:

DeJesus
Campana
Castro
LaHair
Stewart
Soto
Cardenas
Barney
Maholm

Cardenas instead of Soriano is not a bad move, although I would rather see Joe Mather as the Cubs really could use another power threat in the lineup. But Cardenas does not strike out as much as Soriano and is more capable of stealing a base at this point. But Cardenas has not played much left field.

What's his OPS?

Nice win. Maholm continues to pitch well, LaHair gets the RBI and Russell and Dolis close out the game.

No Marmol, no Wood= the Cubs being able to hold a lead. Think where they would be without the blown saves this year. However,IF they're going to compete long term, they need to find more offense from someone. They have taken two out of three from the Cardinals, Phillies, Dodgers, and Braves. They split with the Reds. Pretty nice stretch after a horrible start. Hopefully they can keep it going.

Yeah, they are definitely doing better than I thought they would at this point in the season due primarily to some outstanding starting pitching. But one run a game ain't gonna carry them far. They are making the best of what little offensive output they are getting, but they have to find a way to score more runs if they are going to compete for the long run. Still, they have been a lot more fun so far than I anticipated even with their lack of hitting.

I have to admit the starting pitching has been better than I ever thought it would be. But the Cubs need more power in that lineup.

Santana's team has gotten shut out each of the last 5 times he's been on the mound. He hasn't been real good this year, but it wouldn't have mattered.

Dempster is in basically the same boat, only he's pitched WAY better than Santana. Almost ANY runs would have gotten Dempster a win or two. Santana can't say that. He's given up 24 earned runs, or 4 per game. Dempster has allowed 4 earned runs all season.

There's no logical reason to feel more sorry for Santana. He wouldn't have gotten the wins anyway, but he also didn't deserve them.

Whether or not we trade Dempster gets traded depends on where the Cubs are at towards the end of June. If they perform like most of us think they will, they will be out of the race, and Dempster could be traded if he continues to pitch well. If a contending team has an injury, the Cubs could get a good price for him. However, if they continue playing well, they do play in a crappy division and could be in contention. They may want to hold onto Dempster. I'm not holding my breath though.

I may be in the minority here but I would like to see the Cubs sign Dempster to a 2 or 3 year deal after the season. I would be more than comfortable with a rotation of Garza, Samardijsa, Dempster, Maholm and someone to replace Volstad.

I just wonder how many years Dempster has left. I think he just turned 35, do my guess is not many. His stock may be higher now than its ever going to get. I really like the guy, but if we aren't going to contend, now is the time to build for the future by trading veteran players while we can still get something for them

How many runs have they scored for Dempster? I realize more, but his ERA is MUCH better than Santana's.

Not that I take this into account, but Santana getting some runs tonight finally.

FWIW I agree with ya.

Agreed 100%.

I like Dempster too, but look at his contract:
Ryan Dempster Contract, Salaries, and Transactions

He's making $15 million this year, and looks like his contract is up after this year, so the choices are re-sign him, trade him mid-season, or let him walk.

I'll assume that Theo & Jed aren't going to let Dempster walk and get nothing back for him.

As for resigning him - what are the odds of signing Dempster for significantly less than his current salary? I guess I don't really want to see the Cubs re-sign a 35 year old pitcher for double-digit millions per year.

If it's me, I think I look to trade him mid-season and hope to get some decent young talent in return (unless Dempster blocks a trade - I don't see anything about a no-trade clause there but not sure if that's complete info).

Dempster is a 10/5 guy so he has a no trade clause, regardless of what his contract says.
