Iowa's Biggest Rival: Interesting poll results

Iowa fans can keep trying to convince everyone that Nebbie is going to be a huge rivalry game with national relevance all they want, but you know how the old saying goes, "s*** in one hand, wish in the other. see which one gets filled first".

Nebraska fan does not care about Iowa. they're after tOSU, MU, and PSU because those are the teams that they believe are on their "level". everyone else is, in their opinion, beneath them. it's going to completely **** Iowa fans off and make them loathe NU even more, but NU is going to come in and Iowa will be treated by NU in the same way that Iowa treats ISU, like little brother. I don't think it even matters if Iowa beats nebraska a few times right off the bat, until there is a national title in your trophy case nebraska fan is incapable of coming to terms with someone being their rival because that would be an admission of being on the same level as them.

I agree that Iowa is not the biggest target in the conference for NU fans, but I do think it could become an intense rivalry quickly if Iowa wins a few of the early games. For example, Northwestern's last three decades do not even come close to Iowa's for success, but their recent run of wins against us have me foaming at the mouth for kickoff once that week on our schedule comes around. NU-UM might end up with more national attention, but Iowa-Nebraska still could end up being pretty fierce.

Agreed. I look forward to it, too, but no more than I do playing OSU or Michigan. This is going to be a very interesting journey for our football team.

In time that may change, however.

That makes sense, as Nebraska (to my knowledge) has never played either of those schools on even a semi-regular basis. I do remember the one bowl game against Michigan.

In a way, you folks are entering a whole new world, so it makes sense to be excited about it.

I know that Nebraska has replaced Michigan State and Iowa in the academic basement in the Big 10, but as a result of the higher academic standards in Nebraska's new conference, I find myself correcting many Nebraska fans. Here is what you need to know:

NU = Northwestern University
UN = University of Nebraska

Do you understand the difference? If Nebraska was called "Nebraska University" it would be "NU." But it is not, it is the "University of Nebraska," hence UN, not NU.

Now you try it:

Indiana University = ?
University of Illinois = ?

Isn't it actually UNL? University of Nebraska Lincoln?
University of Nebraska–Lincoln

Technically, you are correct. However, I will generally give the flagship university the benefit of dropping the location at the end. For instance, if someone says they went to UM, I assume UM Ann Arbor and not UM Dearborn. U of I (at least here in Illannoy), I assume UIUC and not UIC. IU, I assume Bloomington and not IUPUI, etc. That's why for purposes of Big Ten acknowledgement, I will let them get away without including the "L," but given that Northwestern (a) owns Iowa, (b) is a founding member of the B10 and (c) is actually "NU," I can't sit by while these mouthbreathing Nebraska fans destroy the traditions of the Big Ten due to their inability to grasp the English language.

As of today, Wisconsin is Iowa's biggest rival. But that will change over the next few years. Nebraska will become the Hawk's biggest rival, especially if the game continues to be played on the day after Thanksgiving. The rivalry with Wisconsin will gradually fade because the teams will not play every year. Unless the Big Ten goes to a nine game conference schedule there will be stretches where the Hawks & Badgers don't play for five years.

Sad to say that UNL fans will always try to overlook Iowa, because they want a historic match-up as their main rival. It will be Michigan and Penn st., Iowa will be third on their list every year. For the fans near the boarder it might have a different feel.

Iowa and Wisconsin was a great rivalry where both fans loved beating each other and somewhat respected the other team. We will never have that again. I really hope they change this.

A) You havent played in 10 years
B) The "newness" of NU is pretty cool
C) You havent played in 10 years

BTW whats the ticket prices in Lincoln for the OSU game as apposed to the Iowa game? Bigger ticket should be Iowa right, they are Nebraska new rival right?

It's $70 same as OSU, go back to clown land.

Iowa is going to have to beat Nebraska at least once every three years, including costing them trips to the B10 CG, for it to become a true rivalry on both sides. Iowa is also going to have to acheive equal success with B10 championships and BCS games in order to gain respect from Nebraska as rivals.

And really how can you blame Nebraska fans? You would have to be in your mid to late 30s to remember the last time Iowa beat Nebraska. I'm 33 and my only memories of Nebraska are to blowout victories 12 and 11 years ago.

If Iowa played a home & home series with Missouri in 2011 & 2012 and blasted them off the field both times and Missouri eventually joined the B10 in 2025 would Iowa fans consider that a rivalry? Probably not. Iowa's only games against them recently were victories, including blowouts.

As for the Wisconsin/ISU rivalry arguement? I don't think its really even close. Many Iowa fans would not be upset if the series stopped because it is a no win situation for Iowa. Iowa doesn't compete with ISU for recruits, Iowa wins don't gain Iowa respect, and losses destroy their rep.

Those are completely untrue about Wisconsin. Many Iowa fans were very upset and still are that Wisconisn is no longer an annual opponent. In fact, had Nebraska not be slated as Iowa's "rivalry" game to close the season, leaving Iowa to be stuck with Minnesota as their rival, you would be hearing a lot of upset Iowa fans right now regarding it.

Ok if you say so, you may be watching the NU/OSU game in a van down by the river at that price.

You're going off of Stub Hub. Ticket prices are driven by demand. No different than buying them from a personal ticket broker.

Not saying you're wrong but what is the face value of tickets for Nebraska/OSU compared to Nebraska/Iowa?

I hate Iowa State because their fans make so much about the Iowa game and I love the Hawkeyes and can tell you the vast majority of their roster and the other Big Ten teams... but how can I think Iowa State is a rivalry when I care so little about them that I can't even name ONE player on their roster. Heck... I don't even know who their QB is. Wouldn't recognize their coach if he was standing next to me. But I can always recognize a Cyclone fan because they are in my face talking about this rivalry and how comparing themselves to the Hawkeyes? Wanting to argue about it. Very hard to ignore them... quite an irritating bunch.

Iowa doesn't truly have a rivalry game. The game I get most hyped for is Ohio State... then Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Penn State, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana THEN out of conference games... and heck, right now I would rather play Arizona for excitement than Iowa State, but usually the ISU game is the out of conference game I care about most, but then again... I care about them ALL. Losing to AZ hurt just as bad as losing to Iowa State would.
Nebraska will easily be the game I am most hyped for now that they are in the B10 and our division and a border state with fans even more ridiculously hillbilly than even Iowa State. This will most likely become our rivalry... but we have to beat them more often than Iowa State beats Iowa to call it a rivalry... otherwise we are just like the Iowa State fans thinking we don't consider them a speed bump.
