Iowa's Biggest Rival: Interesting poll results

So you are saying that for the smallest percentage of Iowa fans in the state, it will be the Iowa-ISU rivalry. So we agree.
No because the highest population (Des Moines) will still view ISU as Iowa's rival, but this NU rivalry (that has never been a rivalry and you dont just make rivalries from scratch) you speak of is one that will be amongst the 1,000 NU fans that live in Central Iowa and the Hawk fans in Central Iowa , maybe even including some in the Western part of the state.

And I guess I will just have to disagree but let's say you have 3 guys walking down the streets of Iowa City. One guy is wearing a Wisconsin shirt, other a Nebraska, and the last an Iowa State shirt. The Iowa State fan will get heckled the most without a doubt. Why? Biggest rival

Because they're the easy target?

It's hard to consider a school who hasn't won a conference championship in roughly a century as one of our biggest rivals. The rivalry increased when ISU won those five straight games. But now that the universe has been put back in order, the rivalry is back to normal. ISU is an opponent that most knowledgeable Hawk fans take seriously. But few of us consider them as our biggest rival. If ISU were ever to accomplish anything of merit and make some noise on the national scene, I think the potential could be there for a huge rivalry. As it is now, that's just not the case.

ISU reminds me a lot of Illinois. They don't really have a true conference rival. The Illinois fan base gets pumped for Michigan for example. But that's not a two-way rivalry. Same for ISU. They get pumped for Nebraska but the bugeaters have their own rivalries.

I was born in 1976, and from my perspective, the recent Iowa-Wisconsin football rivalry is the best one we've had in football or men's basketball in the past 30 years.

The rivalry includes some obvious contributing factors. A border, for one. Iowa dominating Wisconsin for years under Fry, then a Fry assistant rebuilding Wisconsin. The Badgers replacing Iowa as the third program in the Big Ten after Ohio State and Michigan. Then Alvarez elevating the Wisconsin program above any level Fry was able to achieve by winning Rose Bowls.

While those factors led to animosity between the fans, I don't think the rivalry started until 2000. I recall how embarrassing it was for Iowa fans and players as Ron Dayne ran wild over inferior players in '99, and the 2000 game was a surprisingly competitive contest. I remember Alvarez complimenting Iowa and Ferentz after the game, saying how physical Iowa played. That was the first time I thought Iowa football was going to be ok again.

From that game on, the rivalry has escalated. However, it took Bielema's promotion to head coach to bring the rivalry to a new level.

I don't think I am alone in my thinking on this one. As a Hawk fan, I first felt a certain sense of pride when he took over as head coach. That feeling is now long gone. I have little respect for the way he conducts himself. Sprinting onto the field in front of his players, in my opinion, shows he still thinks the game is about him, not the student athletes.

Like Norm has said, some of these college coaches must wake up and take a stupid pill, because they think they are the supposed to be the center of attention, not the kids.

And that two point fiasco against Minnesota was beyond embarrassing. If you are going to do that, man up and say the point of the game is to score more points than your opponent, or say Minnesota should stop you if they don't like it.

I didn't think anyone could make Tim Brewster look like a classy, stand-up guy. Turns out Bielema was the one jackhole who could. The fact a lot of Hawkeye fans want to disown him, and yet Wisconsin continues to succeed under him, only adds to the rivalry. I chatted with some friends about this at the time, and to a man, this year's Rose Bowl was the first time any of us could recall cheering against a Big Ten team in a bowl.

It'll be interesting to see how not playing a team every year impacts a rivalry. That's one reason I don't consider Iowa State among Iowa's top five rivalries. Can't even recall the last time they fielded a team. Must have been some budget cuts or something.

Friendly debate here so don't think I'm being a jerk, but how is Nebraska a bigger rival when you haven't played them yet? There is nothing there. And if we are talking about people on the eastern side of the state, they know even less Nebraska fans than they know Iowa State, Wisconsin, or Northwestern fans.

So explain how Iowa had 9,600 ticket request for Nebraska tickets and have a hard time filling the 4,000 allotment from ISU if Nebraska isn't a bigger rival already?

It isn't because it is a Big Ten game now or that Iowa hasn't played there in over 20 years either, because in 2013 it will still be the same situation, more demand than supply.

1. Wisconsin
2. Iowa State
3. Nebraska
4. Northwestern

Seriously, 17. Wisconsin is ALWAYS a bigger game than the ISU game. The Cy-Hawk game isn't UN-important, but Wisky is a bigger deal to us.

For me, Northwestern. Pat Fitzgerald is our Newman. "Someone who is unencumbered by any emotional attachment. Someone whose heart is so dark it cannot be swayed by pity, emotion or human compassion of any kind!"

I view ISU more like annoying fleas or mosquitoes.

The second Nebraska joined the big ten they became a bigger rivalry than ISU in the Des Moines area.
They haven't even played in 10 years how can you be a rival? Who's to say NU doesn't win the first three games of this series in blowout fashion, then is it a rivalry? I dont think NU will think it is. It takes two teams to make a rivalry, not one thinking a rivalry exists. The games over the next few years between these teams will determine whether a rivalry will be made. But lets be honest with each other, does NU really care about beating the Iowa's and ISU's of the world? Hell no, they care about the other "name" programs. ISU wanted to be rivals with Nebraska too, how did that work out? NU thinks more highly of themselves then to be rivals with a team that has yet to win a NC game. They view OSU, PSU, and Michigan on their level. But like I said the next few seasons are critical for this to BECOME a rivalry to some NU fans, and number 1 rival at that, other than that Iowa will still fall a distant third or fourth on their rivalry list in the Big 10 no matter the outcomes.

I agree with that. Wisconsin is a bigger game b/c it is a conference game. I just argue who the bigger rival is.

Before the ISU game you know every Hawk fan says, "we better not lose to these fuc#@%s or else work is going to suck come Monday!!!" :D

If you are a hardcore fan, which I assume most on this site are. YOU HATE WISCONSIN RIGHT NOW. Not even close. It isn't even close in my mind, and it shouldn't be in yours. Now, if the Clowns win some games against us, things might swing some.

Also, I can easily see Nebby becoming the top rival. God willing, we will pound their *** every year, leaving them in the same boat as ISU.

GO HAWKS!

I voted for Wisky in the poll because it was my worst experience at an Iowa road game. Their fans/band made it an easy choice.

On the other hand, my best experiences have been at Penn State and UM.

I had a fantastic time in Madison. Goes to show you that fans have all sorts of different opinions based on how their experiences go at different places. I would go back to Madison in a second.

A) You havent played in 10 years
B) The "newness" of NU is pretty cool
C) You havent played in 10 years

BTW whats the ticket prices in Lincoln for the OSU game as apposed to the Iowa game? Bigger ticket should be Iowa right, they are Nebraska new rival right?

Don't group Iowa and ISU together. Not the same thing, and I bet that even a Nebby fan would admit to that.

Why ISU has been very competitive with NU over the last 10 years? Also minus a BCS win what would a NU fan think is so great about the Iowa program?
