I was born in 1976, and from my perspective, the recent Iowa-Wisconsin football rivalry is the best one we've had in football or men's basketball in the past 30 years.
The rivalry includes some obvious contributing factors. A border, for one. Iowa dominating Wisconsin for years under Fry, then a Fry assistant rebuilding Wisconsin. The Badgers replacing Iowa as the third program in the Big Ten after Ohio State and Michigan. Then Alvarez elevating the Wisconsin program above any level Fry was able to achieve by winning Rose Bowls.
While those factors led to animosity between the fans, I don't think the rivalry started until 2000. I recall how embarrassing it was for Iowa fans and players as Ron Dayne ran wild over inferior players in '99, and the 2000 game was a surprisingly competitive contest. I remember Alvarez complimenting Iowa and Ferentz after the game, saying how physical Iowa played. That was the first time I thought Iowa football was going to be ok again.
From that game on, the rivalry has escalated. However, it took Bielema's promotion to head coach to bring the rivalry to a new level.
I don't think I am alone in my thinking on this one. As a Hawk fan, I first felt a certain sense of pride when he took over as head coach. That feeling is now long gone. I have little respect for the way he conducts himself. Sprinting onto the field in front of his players, in my opinion, shows he still thinks the game is about him, not the student athletes.
Like Norm has said, some of these college coaches must wake up and take a stupid pill, because they think they are the supposed to be the center of attention, not the kids.
And that two point fiasco against Minnesota was beyond embarrassing. If you are going to do that, man up and say the point of the game is to score more points than your opponent, or say Minnesota should stop you if they don't like it.
I didn't think anyone could make Tim Brewster look like a classy, stand-up guy. Turns out Bielema was the one jackhole who could. The fact a lot of Hawkeye fans want to disown him, and yet Wisconsin continues to succeed under him, only adds to the rivalry. I chatted with some friends about this at the time, and to a man, this year's Rose Bowl was the first time any of us could recall cheering against a Big Ten team in a bowl.
It'll be interesting to see how not playing a team every year impacts a rivalry. That's one reason I don't consider Iowa State among Iowa's top five rivalries. Can't even recall the last time they fielded a team. Must have been some budget cuts or something.
