Iowa's Biggest Rival: Interesting poll results

Are you seriously that delusional. How can one fan base tell another fanbase that the entire fanbase is wrong about who their biggest rival is. Wake up call Iowa fans think ISU is irrelevant and not our biggest rivalry. Get a clue.

YOU think that. I somehow doubt that the entire fanbase is in agreement with YOUR opinion.

like some have pointed out, I would venture to guess that who you believe to be Iowa's biggest rival is has a lot to do with your geographical location within the state, as well as other outside factors (where you work, crazy family members, if travisam has ever cleaned your rugs, etc.) there is no definite answer to this, hence the 10 pages of discussion.

Only way this game really takes off as a rivalry for both sides is if Iowa wins at least the first 2 games.

I agree that if Iowa gets UNL a few times right off that bat that their fans will likely look at a bit more seriously and get up for it in the future. but right now UNL fans are not expecting it to be the rivalry game that Iowa fans are at all.

I think their delusions and belief that it's still 1990 and another national trophy is having their name etched in it while we speak is being vastly underestimated here.

from a fan perspective, Iowa is to nebbie, right now, what ISU is to Iowa.

I completely agree with that in the sense that Iowa is lil bro. The difference is, we can knock Nebby off the pedestal with a few wins. It'd take more than that for ISU.

Really hope they institute some sort of trophy for this game.

I'm not arguing that you need to do anything. I'm just arguing that it is already in place. Iowa fans view ISU as their biggest rivals. Whether they admit it or not is another story.

Good to know that you speak for everyone here. I guess that during even years, when ISU comes to Kinnick and I'm looking for games to go to, I suppose I'm doing you a great disservice by not even considering going to the Iowa State game. I suppose I should pick Iowa State over teams (from last year) like Wisconsin, Michigan State, and/or Ohio State.

Silly me.

No, there are 10 pages of "discussion" because of a couple Clown trolls that kept stirring the pot, insisting that ISU is Iowa's biggest rival. No Iowa fan ever claimed that statement as their own in this thread.

Though I'm sure that there are some fans who do in fact view ISU as our biggest rival, the overwhelming majority do not.

well almost 500 people agree with the "clown trolls" in the gazette poll that was the inspiration for this thread.

Meaning 11.3% voted for ISU. Which means the poster a couple posts ago who stated "the vast majority do not" was absolutely correct.

but at the same time I dont think CR gazette readers would represent the "vast majority" of Iowa fans.

the same poll done by the register would surely yield different results.

On campus I would say:
1. Iowa State
2. Wisconsin
3. Minnesota

During my three years at Iowa I have sold various student tickets to games I didn't want or plan to attend, I could get nearly double for the Iowa State game compared to any other game (maybe Wisconsin was pretty close).

It will be interesting to see where the Nebraska rivalry stacks up. I think that not playing Wisconsin every year will make Nebraska the second biggest rivalry game. Wiscy to third. I think Minnesota would be the biggest game if they started experiencing some big success.

If I had to choose one team to beat every year I would choose Nebraska. I grew up in Western Iowa, though.

Clown fans just can't accept the fact that Iowa fans DON'T consider the clowns their primary rival and never have.

Iowa's primary and true rivals are teams Iowa have been playing for 80 or 90 years.

Clown fans ALSO hate it that Iowa has other primary rivals and that the clowns fall anywhere from 4th to 7th on Iowa's rivalry list.

Iowa's true rivals ALWAYS have been Wisconsin FIRST AND FOREMOST, Michigan St, Illinois, and Minnesota. These teams have been playing for a long long time (Mich St since the 50s).

Clown fans also hate the idea that THEY HAVE NO OTHER RIVALS in college football except Iowa. Iowa is their ONLY rival; they never have had a true rival in the Big 12. One that both sides consider a rivalry.

Sure Iowa fans talk trash with clown fans but Iowa fans also talk trash with Ohio St fans but TRASH talk does not make a rivalry. Ohio St owns Iowa and they would not consider the Iowa/osu games rivalry games.

The clown program is very similar to the games between Iowa and osu. Iowa, like osu, wins and have won most of the games in the short series. The clowns had a nice little run when Ferentz first took over the program but that has again changed to Iowa's favor. The clowns RARELY compete for an instate recruit because most kids in Iowa WANT to go to IOWA, NOT isu, and always have. Rarely will Iowa lose a recruit that Iowa wants to the clowns in football.

Ask Wisconsin fans who THEY think is their primary rival and they will say Iowa. Thus, when both fan bases talk about their primary rival being each other, THAT is a true rivalry.

Even Nebraska will quickly overshadow the clown game. But that will take awhile to be a true rivalry and each team will have to beat the other regularly. Plus, because the game is the last game on both of their schedules, it won't be long before the two teams are playing for the Division Championship. Thus, THOSE games will have great meaning as do ALL Big 10 games.

The clown game is a preseason game that really means nothing. The game is a lose lose situation for Iowa. Iowa is EXPECTED to win the game, thus when they do it means nothing; when they lose, then it is a huge upset. But rarely does a loss to the clowns mean much in the long run of the season because they can still win the Big 10 and go to a BCS game.

The clown game is simply a preseason game with a lot of trash talk and that is that. AND we ALL know that if the clowns win, that win MAKES their season because they know they will never win the Big 12 (and never have) and the best they can hope for is a second or third tier bowl game, IF they win 6 games.

AS much as clown fans would like Iowa fans to consider them their primary rival, they simply aren't...they fall into the middle of the pack on Iowa's rivalry list.

Trying to use a point that Iowa fans debate clown fans everyday does not make the game a rivalry. That is silly.

Eastern Iowa fans might know and debate less Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan St, Illinois fans on that part of the State, but they truly dislike those teams MUCH MUCH more than the clowns.

The clown game means nothing in the scheme of a football season. THAT is what makes the game less of a rivalry...simply because the game means NOTHING in the long run.

Which bragging rights would Iowa fans rather have---Beating the clowns or winning the Big 10. Which bragging rights would Iowa fans rather have---beating a Wisconsin team for the Big 10/Divison title in a series that is something like 43-43-1 (or very similar) or beating the clowns preseason?

Which bragging rights would Iowa rather enjoy--winning Floyd of Rosedale with all the history that encompasses THAT LONG series or beating the clowns preseason?

Which bragging rights would Iowa fans rather enjoy--beating the hated Illini (at which in one point of their series the series was banned) and knocking them out of contention for a Big 10 title or beating the clowns preseason.

Who would Iowa rather beat the most--osu, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, NW, Minnesota, Illinois, or any other Big 10 team OR the clowns? THE answer is quite obvious to Iowa fans.

Which game would clown fans rather win---the Iowa game because their program is SO overshadowed by the Iowa program. Beating Iowa gives importance to their program. Beating the clowns means little to nothing for the Iowa program.

And don't forget, many State of Iowa fans want the clowns to win when they don't play Iowa. How many Iowa fans want Wisconsin, Illinois, Mich St, Minnesota, or any other Big 10 team to win...NONE.

The Iowa/clown game is simply a preseason game that many State of Iowa fans enjoy to watch. THAT does not make the game the premier rivalry of Iowa.

Another point is that Iowa fans are very very disappointed that we don't get to play Wisconsin this year. Most Iowa fans would like to see the Iowa/clown game go away so that Iowa could play someone else, like Pittsburg or some other team.

Iowa fans would have been greatly disappointed if they could NOT play Nebraska this year (and the last game of the year). Again, most Iowa fans could care less if the clown series is cancelled.

Iowa fans would be shocked and very angry if Iowa could never play Wisconsin, Minnesota, Mich St, and so on again, and so would those fans.

If the clown series were cancelled, Iowa fans would shrug their shoulders. Some would feel bad but those feelings would be quickly changed when Iowa played a team like Pittsburg (just an example) in place of the clowns.

The ONLY true fan base that would hate to see this series end are clown fans because they KNOW they would have NO other rivalry in college football, even if their rivalry is down the list on Iowa fans.

THAT is why clown fans are really disillusioned when it comes to the clown/Iowa series. JUST because clown fans think this game is the biggest game for both fan bases does not make it so...it simply is not true.

If the series ended this year, the ONLY program that would be truely hurt would be the clown program. Iowa would simply schedule someone much better than the clowns. AND the fanbases of both programs would look forward to that game.

The clowns could schedule someone else, but THAT game would just be another game and the other team would be EXPECTED to beat the clowns (like Iowa is). Other than the clowns playing a team like Wyoming or some other likewise team, there would be NO expectations from the clowns playing on the opposing teams field. A BCS team would expect to win the game and the game would be a warmup for that team's season play.

Iowa would be much more than a warmup for an opposing team to play. Oh sure, the clowns might win on occasion, but most programs fans would not take playing the clowns very seriously. They would Iowa.

Here is another point...

Iowa fans can not go to a clown site and even remotely say anything negative about the clowns/clown program. They will be immediately banned.

Clown fans come to this site and talk trash and do not get banned. If Jon treated clown fans like the clown site treats Iowa fans, clown fans and the program would be even more remote to Iowa fans then they already are. BUT clown fans come here and debate and even talk trash and they do not get banned. The clown site will not ALLOW ANYTHING negative to the clown program to be posted...ANYTHING.

That alone tells everyone the incredible inferiority complex that clown fans have when it comes to Iowa (or I suspect any other program).

Agreed with most of the post, but not this part. Let's be honest, we're not exactly famous for scheduling world beaters so I think what you meant to say is that "Iowa would simply schedule someone just as "good" as ISU".

That might because they despise us as a bitter rival and we honestly don't really care what they have to say. I honestly enjoy posts like these because it what some of them actually believe or are willing to argue about. It's almost like talking to a three year old where no matter what they say or how far fetched it is all you can do is laugh.

I don't know about biggest rival but I do hate Nebraska the most even though I had a daughter graduate from there. Then I would have to say Iowa State.
