Get a pt. Guard

I think right now, the 5 is the position that needs upgraded the most. For next year, we need an upgrade at the 2 more than an upgrade at the 1. Our 3 and 4 are good for the foreseeable future. Hopefully Garza makes the 5 good for the foreseeable future.

At least you admit we need to add an impact guard for next year

You know, it might just be OK to have 56 on this site. To have someone constantly be such an apparent pain in peoples' arses so much is actually entertaining at times. He plays a role here, and serves to unite so many of the rest of us against him if nothing else.
Now there's a guy with some lateral movement!

I don't know about his ball handling skill set

but he can't defend his position and he's not a scorer.:D

You do realize that EVERY guard gets burned. Many times. In every game. If you don't believe that, then you either aren't watching much basketball or you are simply blind.

I played D3 basketball and our guards got burned; our coach actually got mad when the bigs couldn't rotate defensively quickly enough and cover that up because he KNEW that guards would be burned defensively. And he won over 500 collegiate games (he won over 200 as a high school coach), so he knew a bit about basketball.

Defense is a team endeavor. When it's being played by all five with a cohesive plan as to what they have to do, where they have to go, right down to hand placement and which foot to attack defensively, it's a thing of beauty. When one member of the team makes a mistake, the other four have to recover for that mistake. You can see the good plays the young Hawks make; you can also see the mistakes made and their inability to recover. It will come with time.

Careful, 56 WATCHES a ton of basketball.

It's crazy to me you said going into the season you knew we would struggle at the PG position, said we have no viable backup and we're not bringing in a new PG so instead of stating the obvious about what would make our team better you just try to troll around it and look dumb because you couldn't possibly want to agree with me even when you know I'm right.

What you forget is you said that you would be THRILLED if Jordan could come close to replacing Mike offensively. He has done that, averaging more PPG than Mikes career average, more APG than Mikes average, shooting a better eFG% than Mikes career average, shooting better from 3 than Mikes career average.

You see the rest of us are THRILLED by what Jordan has done offensively, unlike you who just seems to lie about everything (said you would be thrilled, say you are a Hawk fan, said you wouldn't respond to me until I answered your question).

Troll on!

If you could upgrade one position for next year what would it be? It's not a challenging question. Mine would be the PG Position

I would want a True Center who can protect the rim and rebound.

My second wish would be for another perimeter defender and a guy who can penetrate. Could be a PG or just a guard.

Fran might have already accounted for this.

Im hoping Garza will account for #1.

I am not writing off Dailey yet. He's got super long arms and is pretty explosive. He might be for us what they call a "3 & D" guy in the NBA. I also think Moss might be a guy who penetrates to the basket some more next year. As someone pointed out earlier, it's not the biggest part of our offense, but it would help at times.

At least you admit we need to add an impact guard for next year

I answered your question. The odds of it being a 5 way tie for biggest need is pretty high. So obviously there is one that is the biggest need. I would like to upgrade all 5 positions every year.

Next year put Williams at point and JB at shooting. Williams can handle it much better and is a better defensive player. Its a no brainer. Fran's teams are never going to be great defensive teams so we need to score a lot. What. I think we are last in points scored and very poor on defending the 3 so lets score a lot of points.

Not as often as ours do. I watch a ton of basketball and our perimeter defense is the worst I've seen. Plus I think we're bringing in a rim protector in next year in Garza so our #1 priority should be getting an impact guard
I know I am going to regret this - but really? The Hawkeyes have the worst perimeter defense you've seen? We allow too many 3 pt shots, there is no question but just a quick check of stats shows plenty of teams allowing more 3 pt shots and higher percentages. NC State, LSU, Arizona State... Much improvement is needed but Hawks are not the worst

I am worn out from reading this entire thread in one sitting. But, I can add a few things, maybe.

1. Re-read all of Knight's posts. He makes more sense than the vast majority of the "other stuff" I read.
2. Quote from Jess Settles: "Jordon B. is one of the best freshman point guards in the country." I think I will stay with Jess when it comes to that evaluation.
3. Brady Ellingson is one of the most solid defensive players on this team. If you can't see it, you better study up. Might also want to listen to Fran on this topic. Moss is going to be a nightmare for other teams as a lock down defender. Take it to the bank. Good grief! Have you watched him? No, not consistent, yet.
4. Hopefully, some of you learned from watching the development of JB, of Williams, of Kriener, so far, that you may want to wait until you sign their transfer papers...which many of you were doing a couple of weeks into the season and even more recently as the year has gone along.
5. As to "rim protectors" and interior defense in general: We have plenty of guys who can do that. Tyler is 6'9" and very strong. He is just flat out green and trying to find his way. Never had to play defense, I expect. Pemsl and Kriener have great potential and each has a nice mean streak to his game. They are both around 6'9" or maybe even Kriener at 6'10"? In short, this line of defense is absolutely the toughest to learn and will only get better with maturity and experience. They have to know when to help out, when to stay back, what angles to use, need to talk a lot and apparently need to learn to foul consistently without getting caught.
6. I hope Garza can add to the interior defense. Guess we will see. But I think we have some great potential already.
7. News Flash. There is no such thing as a perfect point guard. JB is a deadly 3 point shooter. He has a great assist to turnover ratio. He is a very fine ball handler. He reads the floor well and establishes good patterns on the motion offense. His free throw percentage is very high and other than Peter, he is the best in the clutch on the team. (56: A couple of snowflakes don't make a blizzard. Yeah, he missed a couple in the IL game at a bad time. Only thing worse is you judging his free throw abilities with one example, so I won't dwell on the fact that he hit 4 in a row down the stretch against the Hosers). JB lacks explosive quickness, both on O and D, but he is not slow. I think he will learn to compensate with more experience, and we may not even notice this fault down the road. His choices on passing will get better, but he is pretty darn good for his tender age.

Finally, I love irony. I keep reading that we need a point guard who can blow by a defender and get to the rim and then make the shot in a forest of 6'9"+ defenders. We also need a point guard who can stop the other point guards in the big ten from doing just that. BTW, we really need to rebound better.

Starting Williams and Bohannon would be a disaster. That would probably be the worst 1-2 punch backcourt we've ever had

I think what actually holds JBo back is that he typically has to play the point for nearly 30 min. a night. He would be better, the team would be better if he played the point maybe 20 min. and could slid to SG for 5-10 Min.

Either way, if Williams can't do that, we absolutely need another PG on the team that can handle 20 min. on the floor and be a significant upgrade defensively over JBo.

I would be willing to wager that Conner and Jbo share PG minutes immediately. Williams will slide to the 2 guard and split minutes with Ellingson. Moss and Baer will share minutes at the SF spot. Conner, Williams, Ellingson and Moss can all play the 1 through 3 spot so I expect to see some lineup variations based on who is hot and the landscape of particular games. P.S don't sleep on Conner Mac. His first step is every bit as explosive as Harrison Barnes's was in High School. I believe he has the best chance to be the penetrating PG that the fan base keeps pining for. Jbo is still (right now at least) the better pure shooter so it will be interesting to see how and when Fran deploys the various skill sets. I think most Iowa fans will be pleased with "Big Mac Sauce". He should help cleanse the pallets of our fans who have a bitter aftertaste of our PG play over the last 10 years.

Yeah the team that gives up the most 3's is the worst because keeping a man in front of you doesn't matter when discussing perimeter defense. Haha

I think you are in for major disappointment if you think CM is going to be an instant impact type of guy next year. Most people are saying he lacks quickness, but you are saying he has the first step of Harrison Barnes? Hmm.

My eyes are telling me he's a mid-major basketball prospect. My ears are telling me there's a pretty decent chance he doesn't even play BBall at Iowa next year.

Oh well, I hope you're right and the kid turns out to be a stud.

Word! That little girl knows her stats lol.

You can't have a small guy that can't defend at the 2. Start Williams at the point and have Jordan come off the bench.

Hard to know with certainty but at a Hawkeye Luncheon this fall Fran did tell me that the plan was for Connor to play basketball.
