Evidently the owner couldn't keep the place staffed adequately to run a restaurant. The stories coming out of there are not good, a good business was basically ruined. No way that business will make it as a bar only.

Kind of what I was thinking when reading the article. It really needed a gimmick to pull people to the place and they had that with the Gunder burger. Now now unless it changes back.

At least one recent post claims that the place in Gunder closed down
I literally went to Freddy's for the first time ever yesterday evening. Burger was not bad, not great. I think Five Guys runs laps around it and has those fries to boot.
Locally, Jack's Chicken Palace has decent burgers in addition to their poultry. Must get the onion rings as well for the complete experience. Centrally located near all three of Dubuque's main colleges, they are now going strong into their third generation. The previously mention Paul's tap is a solid choice, as are West Dubuque Tap and Knickers saloon, but Knickers may be best known for their pizza.
Jack's Chicken Palace ... not exactly what you expect on the outside ... If the family went to church on Saturday night at St. Anthony's, I knew we were getting food for supper from here. I will admit ... never had a burger from here ... only chicken and fries.
Not a plug, because I don't even know anyone from the town, but a couple times I have been through Sheldon IA and stopped at Langer's bar and grill. First time I had a burger of course (that's my philosophy). Second time a Philly cheese steak.
So far everything has been pretty darn good.
I would recommend if you are ever in the area.

Could any of you honestly say you could eat all of this, and under an hour? Including the shake, I couldn't, I'd get sick
don't know if it is...but Thurmond's in Columbus OH comes to mind there. Very large burgers served that were good..but its been a long time.

Hooters has decent burgers, but my mind is usually distracted when I eat there and I rarely even remember what I ate by the time I have left.

I know it's not in Iowa but Pete's Hamburger Stand in Prairie du Chien is very good. Also 2 Mitt in Elkader.
