Belly Up To The Burger Bar

There's an A&W in Lancaster, in Wisconsin about 30 miles north of Dubuque, where you can still order by speaker and carhops will still come out with the tray that attaches to your car window.

My parents met while working at the old A&W on Dodge Street in Dubuque. My dad flipped burgers, my mom was a carhop. She tells a great story about the second Ali-Liston fight in 1965. There was a huge buzz about this fight because some thought Ali (Still Cassius Clay at the time) got lucky the first time around. The fight started and my mom took an order out to the parking lot. Liston was knocked out before she came back in the building.

There was a funny scene in the first National Lampoon's Vacation, a movie with many funny scenes, where Clark Griswold drops the food tray and it crashes all over the ground. Drive in restaurants were part of the allure of that movie. The movie was a celebration of American Icons that baby boomers had grown up with but by the 1980's were vanishing. For boomers who had grown up with roadside hamburger stands, seedy campgrounds, low budget motels, and route 66 itself, watching the first Vacation movie was like going through a scrapbook of their childhood.
I seem to remember the carhops wearing roller skates also!!!!

In the summer that was very possible and probably so.

In the early to mid 1970's my family would load up the station wagon and travel about two and on half hours from Dubuque to DeKalb every summer to visit my cousins. That was a big time doing in those days that I looked forward to every summer. Eating at Dog'N'Suds or A&W on the way was a ritual of the trip. So was driving past the railroad switching yard that used to exist in Savanna, Illinois and spotting the classic gas station signs from Texaco, Gulf, DX, Skelly, Sunoco, etc. It made getting there more than half the fun.

don't remember roller skates except in the movies. but i do remember the metal change maker they wore on their belt.

Great memories going to A&W as a kid. Loved their coney dogs and "mama burger".

A&W root beer is timeless. Those of you born before 1965 or so will also remember their close cousin Dog'N'Suds, as well as Hardee's precursor Sandy's, with the plaid hamburger wrappers and the bagpipe playing Scottish girl on the sign.

Grew in a classic small Iowa town not far from IC. Dog n' Suds at one end, A&W at the other. Big family treat every weekend was to go to one...then the other the following weekend.

Man...Sandys!

I do remember going to the old Sandys in Marion around ’69, it closed then magically became Hardees. Pretty sure there was an A&W on the corner in the late 60s, where the McDonalds now resides on 7th Ave in Marion, was sad that was closed. Though I was pretty excited about MackyD’s coming to my town.

Sunday mornings from ‘69-71 were cruising with my late father in the ‘66 Toronado on Highway 13/30 up to 120 MPH for a bit. To ‘blow out the gunk’ as he put it.

Then we’d go to the Giant Store to poke around, probably got a plastic muscle car or WWII plane to build when I got home. Is there a cowboy inside the store, Dad???

Then off to McDonalds for a Quarter Pounder with cheese, fries and a Coke.

That’s about as good as it gets when you’re 4.

There's still a Dog'N'Suds on the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette. It was featured in an episode of "Campus Eats" on the Big Ten Network.

Eateries in Iowa City have also been featured in that program, such as the iconic Hamburg Inn.

I went to the A&W by the Eastern IA Airport today for lunch. Had a double cheeseburger, onion rings and strawberry shake. The shake had nice large chunks of strawberries in it. It was around $10.00 & the place was packed. Mostly parents with kids wearing little league baseball uniforms.

Didn't that building become a DOT testing station in the late 80s? I remember going to Marion to take a test in order to get my permit in a building that looked just like that.

There have been a few stores on that corner and near what was the railroad, I think there was a DOT shop tucked in the back. Honestly it was so long ago I was wondering if someone would say, the A&W was a block down...Or was never there and I was actually confusing the Ellis Blvd location.

Dunno guys, it's so hard for me to find a place that makes food better than me for what I prefer. I cook so much at home and can make it exactly the way I want at less than half the price. This spring I bought a Blackstone Flat Top grill and use the shit out of it, it's basically like you're grilling outdoors but with cast iron.

My favorite burger that I make typically involved a topping where I combine cream cheese, crushed up crunchy bacon, chopped jalepenos, salsa verde and cheddar cheese. Heat it enough to melt it and use it as a topping on a burger along with some chipotle mayo and it's amazing. The topping also works as a dip with chips too! I used to make beer can burgers (recipe) but became lazy and realized it's a lot easier to just make a topping instead.

Smoked a rack of ribs yesterday and made about 5 lbs of homemade macaroni and cheese, I still have some leftover smoked brisket from a few weeks ago, some leftover smoked pork loin that I stuffed, some Hawaiian Chicken that I made last week (Recipe). Steak fajitas that I should probably throw away.

I go to a restaurant maybe once every two months and that's only because extended family wants to. I can't remember the last time I decided to go out to eat with the wife or family without parents/grandparents siblings etc.

Here's a couple pics of some stuff I've made recently:

Ribs (one sweet, one spicy) with smoked mac & cheese

Ankeny Diner has a really good, old fashioned cheeseburger.
Someone mentioned Iowa's Best Burger Cafe at the Kellogg exit. Good burger with fresh veggies. And it's in the middle of the convenience store which is kinda cool. Also, they've got a great ice cream selection.
In & Out has a much superior burger to 5 Guys.
Culver's is damn good...especially if you get the Cheddar Butter Burger with red onions and bbq sauce.

What in the hell are those shiny streaks on your ribs?

Lighting, baked some BBQ sauce on them after i took em out of the smoker
Ugh. Please, don't. You just hurt my heart. If you absolutely need to sauce your meat then do it in the last 20-30 minutes of smoke time, not in the oven afterward. And get a mop or brush or something, it looks like a very poor sauce distribution.

Good ribs should stand on their own. Serve them with 3-4 sauces and then people can pick their favorite. Yours look fine and I don't mean to sound critical, it's just that I know that you can do better. If we play Clemson in the playoffs I don't want a bunch of people finding those pictures and then being like "LOL, look at how these Iowa fans cook ribs."

I like to mix it up, it was nice having a sauce crust on it. Certain sauces are amazing when you carmelize them, you should try it sometime. It's not poorly distributed, just a shitty picture. This was just for my family, why do I need 3-4 sauces when they wont use them? Gave the leftovers to a neighbor. Thanks for telling me that you think there's only one way to make something.
