Belly Up To The Burger Bar

Maybe I should go just for the hell of it.

Nah, there's nothing about it that stands out. Only reason I've been back is to see family and friends. Maybe that basketball series they do there with the 4 in state major college teams would be worth the trip, but that's about it. Unless you want to see the butter cow at the state fair. But if you do, stay the hell away from there on east side night. That makes Mos Eisley Cantina look tame by comparison.

Shit guys don’t mean to go OT on our burger thread but it’s better than starting a milkshake thread.... The wife and I are bring the kids back to Iowa in July and I cannot for the life of me remember the restaurant that uses a piece of pie and puts it in your shakes name!? Someone please help my old ass out, thanks

Hamburg Inn No. 2

Just get some, breh. For buttering bread, it is the business. If you're incorporating it into a bigger recipe, you don't get much out of it, but if it is an application where the butter on its own will shine, it is far superior to regular butter.

Done. Thanks, fellas

I tried Five Guys not that long ago and wasn't impressed. The burger was fine but nothing special. It was nearly $15 for the burger, fries and a shake. That seems kind of outrageous for fast food.

I will take In N' Out all day over Five Guys.

Could any of you honestly say you could eat all of this, and under an hour? Including the shake, I couldn't, I'd get sick

Hardees is sooooo underrated.

Around here it’s because of the scurv balls they have working there, but I’ve noticed my town’s Hardee’s has gotten more regular-looking high school students lately instead of the 38 year old meth mouths with a dryer sheet sticking out of their pant leg and the buttons the wrong holes of their dog hair-covered polo.

The only complaint with the one I go to is that they sometimes water down the ketchup, like people can't tell the difference. But I've not had a bad sandwich from there.

Kuma's Corner, several locations in and around Chicago. Great and interesting burgers. Good beer selection. Whiskey on tap. Metal bar. No hipsters. Try it for something different. You will not be disappointed. Prefer the original location on Belmont.

The best restaurant hamburger I ever had was at my dad's joint he had from 1965-75, Kelly's Inn, on E 17th and Grand in Des Moines. Cast iron grill, great beef, toasted buns to have that crisp crunch and nice onion slice and condiments. It was a smaller place that was packed from 6 AM to 2AM for 20 hours with workers from 3 shifts, Statehouse workers for lunch, etc. My dad also cashed payroll checks which would bring in the crowds on Thursdays and Fridays.

B-Bops in Des Moines has a great hamburger/cheeseburger. Our daughter lives in Seattle and has had Five Guys but she says B-Bops is better. B-Bops is open flame cooked burgers which is also like "Iowa's The Best Burger Cafe" around Kellogg along I-80 about mile marker 173 just west of Grinnell. Very very good.
You are correct about Kelly's. I worked across the street at Schuling Hitch and had the burgers for lunch many times. They were the best.

Dinkers in Onaha... cash only...pan seered severed. Takes me back to to homemade burgers my mom made

Runza... surprisingly good for fast food burger. They recently changed for the better

Any small town locally sourced joint... Iowa or Nebraska....fresh, "mooing yesterday" burger

Jethros in Ankeny

Stella's in Onaha

My Grill.

Hit one of these in Nebraska on my way back from Colorado. I was pleasantly surprised.

Red Robin barnyard burger for me.

Another good place to go is the small northeast Iowa town of Gunder (north of Elkader) for a gunderburger. A whole pound of burger (pound and a half?) and it fills full sized plate. You almost have to eat it with a knife and fork.

One problem. I read an article recently that they stopped serving food. The new owner turned it into a bar only now.

Fun fact, I was born and raised in Iowa and spent significant time in all corners of the state, CR, CB, IC, quad cities, Ottumwa, and just about everywhere else, but I have never in my 38 year life been to Des Moines.

Huh? You really need to get out more.

I don't know if it was the best burger I ever had but it was definitely the highest in elevation. We were in Vail, Colorado on vacation and there was this chalet type area where you took a tram up the mountain and there were summer type activities at the top. I had a southwestern style burger with red and yellow peppers, jalapenos, onion straws, the whole she-bang. It was delicious.

As for the elevation, the city of Vail probably sits at about 8,000 feet give or take. We were probably a good 2,500 to 3,000 feet above the city. Did I mention the view that came with that burger?

You mean like good lookin' chics?!

Do you happen to be OK4Prez's looong lost younger brother? You two might really want to check if either or both of you were adopted. Do you have this weird hankering for hot Japanese women?

There.
