Belly Up To The Burger Bar

B&B Market in Des Moines - it's a shit hole but their burger is amazing.
Fun fact, I was born and raised in Iowa and spent significant time in all corners of the state, CR, CB, IC, quad cities, Ottumwa, and just about everywhere else, but I have never in my 38 year life been to Des Moines.

Fuddrucker's is pretty good, the only one I know of is the one I've dined in Omaha, NE. Their slogan is "World's Greatest Hamburgers." They have a burger they put nacho chips and hot peppers on them.

The wife and I are bring the kids back to Iowa in July and I cannot for the life of me remember the restaurant that uses a piece of pie and puts it in your shakes name!? Someone please help my old ass out, thanks

I forgot about Fuddruckers. I was first introduced to it in Dallas, TX. There was a local place called Joe Willys - same concept. First time I ever saw a place serve a bucket of longneck bottles to your table.

When I do my burgers at home on the grill (even if in cast iron), I butter the buns with Irish butter and then hit them with a touch of garlic powder. Then, I grill them for 30 seconds and turn to get good criss cross patterns on them for another 30 seconds. They come out perfect. It's like eating burgers on a makeshift piece of garlic bread. Of course, I eat mine with mayo as well. Dukes brand is the best for burgers.

I don't know if it was the best burger I ever had but it was definitely the highest in elevation. We were in Vail, Colorado on vacation and there was this chalet type area where you took a tram up the mountain and there were summer type activities at the top. I had a southwestern style burger with red and yellow peppers, jalapenos, onion straws, the whole she-bang. It was delicious.

As for the elevation, the city of Vail probably sits at about 8,000 feet give or take. We were probably a good 2,500 to 3,000 feet above the city. Did I mention the view that came with that burger?

That is really interesting. Usually the Ia St Fair brings a lot of people to DSM at least once in their life. Or a Bball or wrestling tournament or just business or meeting up with friends.

You dont have any friends in DSM area?

Is there anything about DSM that you have ever wanted to see or do? I mean it is not the most exciting place. I was born and grew up here before living around iowa city for 15 years. We moved back here for careers and my wife to be by her family. I love my family but they would not be a reason I would live here but I guess my wife would be. :)

Art Center, Living History Farms, State Fair, concert and entertainment, 4th of July I-cubs game with Capitol Fireworks followed by I-cubs fireworks, State Historical Museum? Drake Relays?

Oh and Tasty Tacos and many great Italian restaurants.

Jeez, 4 pages of people mentioning burger joints and zero mention of 2 Mit in Elkader?

For fast food, McDonalds has been stepping up their game with their signature burgers but I'm still a sucker for the mushroom & swiss at Hardees.

I'll take a burger from Fuddruckers if I can get close to one.

Yeah I guess I just haven’t ever had any specific reason or event in DM to go to. My senior year of high school we made it to state in baseball but that was back when the tournament was still split between Carroll and Marshalltown. I don’t know anyone who lives there or in the area.

It’s not like I don’t get out, I think last time I counted I’ve been to 31 states and both coasts, just never made a stop in that town. I guess I have driven I-80 across the state several times and that goes through DM, so maybe that counts? :)

Got nothing against the idea of visiting; it just never came up. Maybe I should go just for the hell of it.

It’s actually just regular butter with a higher butterfat content.

Think American butter, only richer and softer (it spreads a lot easier). And it’s a brighter yellow color.

For caramelizing/browning things like onions, mushrooms, burgers, buns, etc it’s definitely more flavorful but I wouldn’t spend the money for using it to bake.

Hardees is sooooo underrated.

Around here it’s because of the scurv balls they have working there, but I’ve noticed my town’s Hardee’s has gotten more regular-looking high school students lately instead of the 38 year old meth mouths with a dryer sheet sticking out of their pant leg and the buttons the wrong holes of their dog hair-covered polo.
