Belly Up To The Burger Bar

Hooters has decent burgers, but my mind is usually distracted when I eat there and I rarely even remember what I ate by the time I have left.

You oughta try the Silicone Burger. Hard as a rock and hardly moves when they put it on the plate.

That place still open?

It is. I actually went to the one in Chicago fairly often because the food and beer was basically priced like it was 1999. There is one near me but there is also a Twin Peaks. Peaks is only staffed with super hot college girls. Now I haven't gotten their life stories, but I would guess Hootz is mostly staffed with 30-something single moms with multiple kids. Night and day difference.

I was served by an aspiring doctoral candidate at Peaks who was preparing to write a thesis on the Protestant Reformation. After a few minutes of discussion, it was apparent she had heard of neither Martin Luther nor the 95 Theses. She was insanely hot, though.

You never disappoint.

I went to a place in Ankeny last week called Whiskey House that had the best burger I’ve maybe ever eaten. Not a huge burger guy, just sounded good but it blew my mind.

The Hooters in Des Moines is closed, I think Jethros bought it. The last time I ate at Hooters, I had a fish sandwich. It was awful, tasted like it came out of the Iowa River. I took two bites and that was it. I should have gotten a cheeseburger!

You can't go wrong with a burger from A&W, a root beer float & I prefer their onion rings over fries

I don't know if they changed this back, but at one point several years ago I went to an A&W and they had replaced those old school fountains with the HFCS boxes of root beer and it just wasn't very good. If you are running A&W, you have to do the one thing you are known for really well.

A&W root beer is timeless. Those of you born before 1965 or so will also remember their close cousin Dog'N'Suds, as well as Hardee's precursor Sandy's, with the plaid hamburger wrappers and the bagpipe playing Scottish girl on the sign.

The best restaurant hamburger I ever had was at my dad's joint he had from 1965-75, Kelly's Inn, on E 17th and Grand in Des Moines. Cast iron grill, great beef, toasted buns to have that crisp crunch and nice onion slice and condiments. It was a smaller place that was packed from 6 AM to 2AM for 20 hours with workers from 3 shifts, Statehouse workers for lunch, etc. My dad also cashed payroll checks which would bring in the crowds on Thursdays and Fridays.

B-Bops in Des Moines has a great hamburger/cheeseburger. Our daughter lives in Seattle and has had Five Guys but she says B-Bops is better. B-Bops is open flame cooked burgers which is also like "Iowa's The Best Burger Cafe" around Kellogg along I-80 about mile marker 173 just west of Grinnell. Very very good.

Most excellent burgers. Friend of mine from the Eastside, Charley B took me there a long time ago, early Seventies. Went there many times for lunch since then.....

Wilbos has some pretty darn good burgers. In Cedar Falls on main. Im not crazy about there fries though.

Whataburger. Used to hit that when I was living in AZ in early 90s.
Green chilis??? Whaaaaaaat? Love me some Whataburger!

Freddy’s, the patty melt was awesome and the cheese curds were great, just tried it the other day, going back.

Local Colorado, Crave Burger is pretty sick. Super sloppy with a slice of ham or pulled pork and bacon for good measure...3 Little Pigs.

perhaps she would give you an .... indulgence

Well this thread inspired me to go to 5 guys the other night. Got a 2 patty burger, pickle, onion, mustard "tiny fries" which was a small cup in the bag and they basically filled the bag with fries and a small drink $15.88

I grew up in IC and in the 70's there was an A&W on the Coralville strip. My mom took me there all the time when I was a kid, loved the drive up menu board. They had one in Cedar Rapids near Ellis River, but I think the flood of 08 ruined it for good. They have an A&W by the Eastern Iowa Airport, but no drive up menu, just walk in and order.

There's an A&W in Lancaster, in Wisconsin about 30 miles north of Dubuque, where you can still order by speaker and carhops will still come out with the tray that attaches to your car window.

My parents met while working at the old A&W on Dodge Street in Dubuque. My dad flipped burgers, my mom was a carhop. She tells a great story about the second Ali-Liston fight in 1965. There was a huge buzz about this fight because some thought Ali (Still Cassius Clay at the time) got lucky the first time around. The fight started and my mom took an order out to the parking lot. Liston was knocked out before she came back in the building.

There was a funny scene in the first National Lampoon's Vacation, a movie with many funny scenes, where Clark Griswold drops the food tray and it crashes all over the ground. Drive in restaurants were part of the allure of that movie. The movie was a celebration of American Icons that baby boomers had grown up with but by the 1980's were vanishing. For boomers who had grown up with roadside hamburger stands, seedy campgrounds, low budget motels, and route 66 itself, watching the first Vacation movie was like going through a scrapbook of their childhood.
