Belly Up To The Burger Bar

I shit-canned my grill for a Blackstone griddle and haven't looked back. To wit:

--Can cook a week's worth of bacon at one time
--Haven't dropped one, single, f-ing veggie since moving to griddle
-Can do whole breakfast on same surface and actually enjoy the hell out of doing it
--There is literally no better way to do boneless/skinless chicken breast than on the griddle

Do it, you will wonder why you waited so long.

How much bacon do you eat in a week? I'm in my early 40's and I measure my bacon consumption in slices per month. Will any life insurer underwrite you for coverage?

It may be sacrilegious, but rough grind a cut of steak and cook as a burger. It is just hard to beat a good home cooked burger. Def better than any fast food burger.

You were cruising until you got to the Landshark. Yuk!

Dinkers in Onaha... cash only...pan seered severed. Takes me back to to homemade burgers my mom made

Runza... surprisingly good for fast food burger. They recently changed for the better

Any small town locally sourced joint... Iowa or Nebraska....fresh, "mooing yesterday" burger

Jethros in Ankeny

Stella's in Onaha

My Grill.

Red Robin barnyard burger for me.

Another good place to go is the small northeast Iowa town of Gunder (north of Elkader) for a gunderburger. A whole pound of burger (pound and a half?) and it fills full sized plate. You almost have to eat it with a knife and fork.

I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet, but it's Red Robin for me. Give me a Burnin' Love burger with some campfire sauce for my bottomless steak fries and a root beer float to top it off.
They do do burgers well...but man are they expensive.

You're talkin' like a g-d traffic cop. (It's from "The Deer Hunter")

It's not how much I personally eat. It's the fact I make it once, then we can use it for breakfast, salads, etc. We're talking about, say, 16 slices. And we use turkey bacon, because it doesn't shrink as much.

Thanks for the concern, though, Barack.

So you're saying once you go Blackstone, you never go back?

At least one recent post claims that the place in Gunder closed down:eek:

I literally went to Freddy's for the first time ever yesterday evening. Burger was not bad, not great. I think Five Guys runs laps around it and has those fries to boot.

Locally, Jack's Chicken Palace has decent burgers in addition to their poultry. Must get the onion rings as well for the complete experience. Centrally located near all three of Dubuque's main colleges, they are now going strong into their third generation. The previously mention Paul's tap is a solid choice, as are West Dubuque Tap and Knickers saloon, but Knickers may be best known for their pizza.

Obama's love for Five Guys is well documented. It was one of his favorite lunch stops.

Pauls Tap, Dubuque for a burger cooked on a cast iron grill thats as old as me! (and I am old!)

The best restaurant hamburger I ever had was at my dad's joint he had from 1965-75, Kelly's Inn, on E 17th and Grand in Des Moines. Cast iron grill, great beef, toasted buns to have that crisp crunch and nice onion slice and condiments. It was a smaller place that was packed from 6 AM to 2AM for 20 hours with workers from 3 shifts, Statehouse workers for lunch, etc. My dad also cashed payroll checks which would bring in the crowds on Thursdays and Fridays.

B-Bops in Des Moines has a great hamburger/cheeseburger. Our daughter lives in Seattle and has had Five Guys but she says B-Bops is better. B-Bops is open flame cooked burgers which is also like "Iowa's The Best Burger Cafe" around Kellogg along I-80 about mile marker 173 just west of Grinnell. Very very good.

People don't use cast iron enough anymore. Something about cast iron makes it taste so good. You can sear with cast iron and put in oven. Versatile.

I once read the best way to cook a steak was to sear it in a hot cast iron pan for like a couple minutes on each side they place the cast iron pan with steak in an oven on broil for like 5-8 minutes. Don't quote me on the 5-8 as I'd look up to see the exact minutes.

Smashburger uses the cast iron type method. They are above avg but not top notch.

So true, actually Fareway's Own Minute Steak is ground from good steak cuts. It is not a tough minute steak like you get and other stores. They are big and juicy and very good.
