Who's the starting five next year?

I don't know how anyone can predict the starting lineup for next year without knowing what players will improve over the summer.

I agree that for the most part all this speculation is futile.

One thing I will add is that I have had the luxury of attending a couple of practices. A couple of things I will address based on my own eyes and granted it was only a couple times and not even for full practices.

Uthoff will be a major contributor next year and was very solid in practice, fundamentally very sound, moves extremely well for a guy his size and is smoother than White. White is a more herky jerky, non traditional player who is sort of a tweener. Jarrod is either a better shooter, and just plain more fluid on the court. Aaron is a bit longer. Both have good athleticism and are able to get off the floor pretty well. From what I saw Jarrod was tough to stop when he wanted to be but seemed to be really unselfish. Which I think is going to be a positive trait for Fran's teams as it is something he was preaching during the practice. Meyer, is a tough one to figure out also. He plays much like a 3 more so than a 4 or 5. He has the ability to step out and shoot but seemed less inclined to really bang on the inside. Ingram's size or lack there of hurts him because it is obvious that he is a 2 or 3. He has decent ball skills but has a below average shot at this point.

Another note is that they get after it pretty hard in practice as a whole, I was really impressed with the intensity level that I was able to see. The coaches are constantly teaching also, pulling guys aside and teaching one on one. After being able to see these guys practice earlier this year I came away feeling very good about where the program is headed.

If I was to guess who will start next year, I think it will probably be
1. Gesell
2. Marble
3. White
4. Basabe
5. Woodbury

off the bench in this order

6. Uthoff
7. Olaseni
8. McCabe
9. Oglesby/Jok
10. Clemmons

Much less time for
Ingram
Meyer


This summer will be critical for Fran and this group to really define roles and keep building on that chemistry. There is a lot of positive momentum going right now and into next year!

Good post, as usual. Can Meyer knock down that outside shot? If so a guy his size would be an advantage playing the 3, if he is quick enough to defend it. He does need to toughen up or conference bigs are going to eat him alive. At this point Iowa really does not need more people playing the 3 but he has 4 years left to develop.

Ingram, at this point I wonder what Fran was thinking even offering him a scholarship unless there is something we have not seen yet that he can do. Hopefully that is the case, he is a very nice guy and I would love to see him succeed.

I can't wait to see how Jok does in the summer league, he is the wild card. If he can prove to knock down that perimeter shot it would give the Hawk offense a huge boost, especially with that second line. Nobody seems to know how well he can defend and that might determine his playing time, or lack thereof, this upcoming season. As bad as Oglesby shot the ball he has defended well.

Great assessment on Uthoff, another guy who can give Iowa's offense a boost by knocking down that perimeter shot. I hope White spends a lot of time working on that as well. If White ever hopes to continue playing as a professional he will have to prove he can shoot on the perimeter and there has been times this year his wide open looks have been way off the mark. He will not get all those foul calls and free throws at the next level. But I have to keep reminding myself he is only going to be a Junior, it seems like he has been playing forever.

Hopefully the Hawks win tonight and extend the season a little longer. Being I am a Cub fan and I am not optimistic for the football team, it is going to be a long offseason. It is great to see Hawkeye basketball relevant again.

What do you know?? I talk to people involved in the program and are around practice. Wait til you see Uthoff next year before you open your mouth. I love Whites game but Uthoff is a more athletic better shooting version of White. and that says alot.

Regarding Meyer, he does have a decent outside shot for a guy his size which is also a part of the reason I think he likes to hover outside at times. He also seems to move well for his size, but I agree he will have to get dirty inside to see the floor next year. He won't get time as a 3 imo, we will have too many better options at that spot.

While I think Ingram may pay some dividends down the road with some development I too see him as a guy who will have a difficult time finding minutes. As is if he was 6'5 he would still be on the outside looking in regarding future minutes next year. His best bet is to trim some bad weight to get the most he can from his athletic ability and become a defensive specialist. Who if plays and scores it is just a bonus.

Their is a good chance that Jok will play a big role next year also. When I say big I don't necessarily mean big minutes but important minutes. Think of a bit stockier version of Marble with a much more pure shot. This year we struggled when Marble was struggling or not on the court. He is by all definitions our best playmaker. Peter has that playmaker gene. The ability to shrug off defenders with his step back with a quick release. I wish I could say I have seen him against our current guys but I haven't had that opportunity. I have however heard from a couple different people who have seen it that he can get his shot nearly anytime he wants when scrimmaging against our guys. Obviously this would have been in a scrimmage type setting but I took it to mean offensively speaking he is already on the same level as some of our better offensive players.

I've been hesitant to post too much regarding Jok and Uthoff just because our fanbase can get ahead of ourselves and build tremendous expectations which often get trumped by doses of reality. I hate nothing more than when the fair weather crowd starts piling on(like so many have done with josh O this season). People are quick to dismiss when their rediculously high personal expectations aren't met. Neither Jok or Uthoff are going to turn this team into some cindarella tourney run team alone. But when added to the current roster of returness they may fill some much needed roles next year and possibly more.

Not trying to take anyone's side here BBallman, but Jarrod has been practicing against major d-1 players at 2 big time schools since he arrived in college. He does do some things as well or better than White. A couple of things I saw first hand were, I thought he hand better hands than White, call it softer hands or whatever. He shoots the ball from the outside better than White. He is an equally active rebounder also. He has length similar to White and moves more fluidly/naturally. White is no slouch but I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what Uthoff brings to the table next year.

I know it is hard to argue that a kid is already better than a guy who averaged 13 and 6 but I think once JU gets his feet wet he will be hard to keep off the court.

There is some truth to that, you can simulate games all you want in practice but it can never duplicate the speed & physicalness of game action. This is not Fran talking to the media trying to avoid running a player down so we should not immediately discount what someone is posting here that claims to have seen a couple of practices/scrimmages. Oglesby drilling practice shots is one thing but actually scrimmaging against each other and seeing the differences between certain players is another. Obviously Uthoff will have to prove it on the court and there is no guarantee that he will just because BJHawkstrong seen him in a couple of practices/scrimmages. But you cannot completely discount what you see in practice/scrimmage either.

Damn, let's not start tearing players down before we even see them on the basketball court during a game.

What is the context of this question? Considering the various starting line-ups used this year there may be 10 correct answers. Also, starting hasn't equated to playing time so it really doesn't matter. I apologize if these comments have been made...didn't read the other responses to such a lengthy thread.

One thing that White will have on Uthoff is strength. Now I know White isn't some body builder but Uthoff is in the Kurt Looby category when it comes to size. He's very skinny and needs to put on some lbs.
