Urban Meyer - Can Someone Please Explain To Me?

He's going nowhere then because Urban just tweeted he reported it which means he's not leaving without at least his $38 million.
Better have proof he reported and to whom. But that means he's lied on numerous occasions to media and others, plus kept the "beater" on staff.

Again we are talking about a private university investigation. He might not need proof to take on Smith. He said she said can go to whoever is most believable. Then of course there is the scenario where Smith will be asked to fall on his sword and take the wrap to close the books and continue forward with Urban. My inner conspiracy theorist is doing cartwheels.

I work right in the middle of academia at the U. Please quote me the federal or state statute that addresses state employees (typical not coaches contracts) and whether we are required to fire subordinates who are accused of domestic assaults/situations. I manage a staff of 18 right in the middle of academia, so I would really like to know. I have to be very careful how I manage my staff, interview candidates, make sure I follow proper procedures, etc., but, nobody ever told me that I would be canned if one of my staff had a charge or conviction in a private setting. I realize I am not a coach but you are referring to universities and staff as a whole.

My point is that it comes down to the language in the contract, not so much federal or state guidelines. Please quote me the federal law universities are to follow, concerning what we are discussing.

It's easy just to assume and spew chit out without anything to back up statements.

Whoa, wait a second here. Early reports from people on this site and other news outlets say there was a 'choking' incident and was not wanted by the wife.

That kind of assault could be a misdemeanor or it might be felony assault.

If Meyer had information about a felony and did not give that info to police or school admins then that is very bad.

So Melrose, you say you manage 18 people and you are telling me that if you had info that one of them was doing felonious acts you would just keep quiet.

I will await your answer.

If someone at my work (and I used to manage 12 professionals) was said to be doing felonious acts and the info seemed real I wouldn't sit on it. I might not go to the police without evidence but I might talk to upper mgmt because this kind of behavior can be going on at work or spill over from private life to work.

Urban's story is he did inform the proper people once he found out. The question is, did he know for sure it was happening, did he think it was probably her being crazy, or did he think it was somewhere in the middle? Unless he knew for sure what happened, how bad it was, and if it was an ongoing thing, really all he could do is report it. You don't fire someone for rumors.

All that said, if he knew with certainty that he was actually abusing her and didn't fire him, he's really at fault morally, even if he's not leagally.

Smith and Meyer are in cahoots. Their stories came out within the hour of each other and Smith's story accomplishes 2 things. First it further substantiates Meyer's claim that Gene Smith knew about all of this. Second it points to Meyer being in the dark about the severity of abuse and establishes him as saying " if I find out you hit her you're done".

It is all rather convenient how the pieces have fallen so nicely. Well played Urban.

Or it's true.

So Urban Meyer has a special assistant, a "life skills expert / chemistry coach", on staff? Someone "to help us all get on the same page" according to Meyer. A special assistant he has been friends with for over 20 years.

Let's call it what it is. A fixer or someone who goes around providing cover and cleaning up Meyer's messes. And in this case pressuring an assistant's wife to not report her abusive husband. No way Meyer didn't know what was going on. Time to clean house but no guarantee Ohio St will.

Look it is sad state of affairs in big time college athletics as so many schools have sold their souls for the almighty $. Penn St, Michigan St, Minnesota, Ohio St and the recent list goes on and on of schools that have covered up sexual abuse and domestic violence.

And we have had moments here where our coaches and administrators have not acted in the students' and student athletes' best interests.

Whenever these stories break one of the questions I ponder is how would Iowa fans react if it were our scandal? We can't control how our coaches and administrators conduct themselves, but as fans we don't have to participate in the uncritical support and enabling of abusers and their superiors. Sadly, I believe MANY Iowa fans, with some misguided notion of protecting THE brand, would act like so many fans from Penn St and Michigan St and Ohio St and other schools have reacted. Am I wrong? A similar example of an uncritical defense of the brand was during the rhabdo incident where fans on this very site were blaming players claiming they had been out partying the night before. Where will we fans decide to come down on these issues? Where will we draw the line? Will we blame the victim like so many fans at Ohio St were quick to do?

No man you're right. It is a very common human response to rationalize something that would otherwise damage the psyche. It is in fact a well documented defense mechanism for the brain.

The more interesting case study might be how billions of people around the world have ingrained their love for a sports team so deeply that it becomes a core belief. One that the brain must literally defend itself if the foundation of the belief is ever under attack. It really is quite the phenomenon.

The mafia refers to this as a "mechanic"

And it seems Alford was his own mechanic

So true.
In fact, it's so true, many Hawk fans are gonna read this and mentally dismiss it because the truth isn't very nice.

It is not in my job description to investigate and interview my employees wives, relatives, etc.. I wouldn't just sift back if I knew was found guilty, but, you better make sure all your ducks are in a row before you act on accusations. I'm just saying you can't just jump the gun as there are two sides to every story. Just because someone's my employee doesn't make their word gold. As you know, there are proper channels that you have to take, and have to do things correctly.

Interesting. Now it's a battle between him and Gene Smith. He's throwing Gene under the bus now. Balls!!

Apparently, Gene Smith received the police report when Zack Smith was at an away game and he was called back to Columbus for a meeting. This according to the Zack Smith interview. I think maybe Urban found out about the Zack Smith interview and quickly came out with a statement because of what he said at Big Ten Media days. Another tidbit, apparently the police report had been changed at some point because the original report had the box checked that he was arrested and that was later changed (not sure the source for this).

I just read on an OSU board that "someone in the know" said that he'll be suspended for 3 or 4 games (Oregon State, Rutgers, TCU, and Tulane) and nothing else. Seems like an OSU move.

Also saying that the Smith family has done a lot of weird stuff in the past several years and are the ones to blame.
