Tyler Cook

I think Cook is developing this year. He's starting to take that 15 to 18 foot jumper with some success. He's had to develop that because 1 guy can't seem to guard him and teams are starting to double him low. Hopefully he starts to pass out of the double teams better. My guess is he isnt going anywhere but to his jr. year as a Hawk

Yep. Defense needs work but he's definitely improved overall. Needs to take another step forward.

My opinion is it's up to the player to improve individual skills. It's up to the coach to improve the players ability to play as a team. If you say these players didn't develop individual skills, then how do you explain the team getting better after losing Marble? How do you explain the team getting better after losing White? If the remaining guys didn't improve, how did our team improve?

I think it was a mixture of the players improving, and Fran getting them to improve as a team. If you don't believe the players improved their individual skills at all, you should think Fran is a hell of a coach to keep improving the team while losing 1st team big 10 players.
If they truly got better as players and as a team Fran would have at least been to one sweet 16 . Fran has not taken one player or a team to a single sweet 16 as a head coach. The proof is in the pudding

I love that Fran gets all the credit for how bad Iowa is now, but no credit for helping his former players become better. Cause that just would have happened - and they got more playing time - before that Fran was just holding em back. Tough tough tough crowd.

Fran is that you??

A team that made the sweet 16 one year could get better the next year and end up losing in the first round. You don't base how good a team is soley on a single elimination tournament.

Even if you want to argue Uthoff's senior year was the same as Whites, how did they not drop off after losing White and Olaseni if the other guys didn't improve?

No I don't. I defend crappy takes like saying a coach who has had 4 straight 1st team All B1G players in his program doesn't develop players.

Even when Fran was doing good there were some good takes on some of his deficiencies and some really bad ones. With him doing bad now, it's the same, except the bad takes are way over the top. Someone can say the dumbest thing ever and if you correct them you're just an apologist.

I have all sorts of issues with Fran. His rotation - his time out usage - his distribution of minutes. I hated how he acted to the media at times - I hate his current roster management. I obviously don't like how his current crop of recruits are progressing. I can go all day with issues with Fran.

That's just it - the program was taking steps forward even when they lost their best player from the previous year. Last season, when they lost Woody, MG, Sapp and Ut, it was easier to explain a drop off. But, when we lost Jok, I assumed more of the same as far as projection. I bet the coaching staff did too. I know the local media did. I am pretty positive that this entire program is gonna be shook up in the off season to avoid another year like this. But what can he do IN season? Not a lot but try and coach and develop what he has...and he hasn't done nearly a good enough job.

PC, FM is not a good coach Embrace it.

He's a players coach. Not an x's and o's coach. Obviously the elite coaches are good at both. But most aren't. This is what it looks like when a players coach fails to get the players. He's got them coming in now tho so we "should" see more top 3 type finishes in conference soon.

So, how did he get here? How did he make it the B1G by not being a good coach? How has he placed in the top half of the B1G conference the previous 5 seasons - competing against schools like MSU, UM, Purdue, IU, WI, TOSU to do it? Get 400 career D1 victories? I just don't get how we need to embrace something that before this season wasn't even a topic to a rational objective on looker.

Besides, my arguement wasn't about whether he was a good coach or not. It was about whether he improves players or not. Don't come into a debate about something entirely different and throw out "he's not a good coach". If I'm debating wide receivers with someone on the football forum, can I expect you to show up and tell me Fran isn't a good coach too?

Players coming in? Maybe 1? Players coach. Ya now what that means.

No discipline.
Wants to be liked more than doing what it right.
No accountablity
When accountability is absent, the attitude and efforts of the high performers will begin to slide toward mediocrity.. Sound familiar?

If you can't coach Xs and Os you better for darned sure have talent like Bill Self.

Fran's assessment of talent

He can win with
A player from the caliber of Tri County
Feminine shooters
Football player
Point guards with not speed or breakdown ability

OK, sure PC.

How did we get where we are? His best years at Iowa
25-13 with a runner up NIT. Woo hoo.
22-12. Woo hoo.

Do any of you ever watch fundamentals or know much about basketball?

Any heart beat of a team at all and he'd finish 14-4 in the Big this year. The Big is that bad.

FM is an idiot on the sideline and has alienated officials.

The NIT season wouldn't even be considered in his top 3 for me personally - but again, you said he's not a good coach? I still don't get it. You want say he's not an elite coach? Sure, yeah, I agree. He's done nothing to prove that. I really thought he was going to with this run of players he has coming in - I still love our Sophomore and Freshman classes and I am pumped about JW & CM next year. But yeah, he definitely hasn't proven to be much better then a "good" coach so far at Iowa. I am hoping for more.

But to say he's an idiot ... not a good coach? Seriously lol - How can you talk down to me about basketball knowledge and fundamentals when you can't recognize that Fran isn't anywhere near IC without being a good coach?
