The Fran Conundrum

Sorry you haven’t grasped that yet so I will flat out say it. Their last name is part of the reason they are being overrated by these scouting services. Actually according to these services that you trust so much they are both small forwards so they do play the same position.

Anyways your opinion on the latter is admirable. I certainly respect what Fran has done here which is part of the reason I think it’s tough. Outside of bringing in a transfer or really changing philosophy, I don’t see the path out of this, and therefore I think it makes sense to get out now. Hopefully I am wrong and he turns it around next year.

Sorry, I wasn't grasping that. I didn't read anywhere where you said it was based on their name, so forgive me. I am definitely slow to some stuff. I get what you are saying now. Personally, I don't think national services give a rip that their dad is the coach at Iowa. And I don't trust them sooo much, I trust them more then you. That's all.

And we have different opinions. That's ok. I see your point. It's tough to argue with seeing what is out on the floor right now. But, IMO, just 1 piece can change that and 1 piece is what it takes. How do I know? Because of last season. I think Iowa would look a lot different with another good SG or PG right now on the team. Not undefeated, not elite...but they'd probably be considered a bubble team. I think they would look better then last season, when they had a good SG on the team and with the rest of the core being a year older and having added Nunge and Garza. Just because that piece is missing (which is on Fran 100% even tho I'm sure he didn't prepare for CW transferring a week before the season started or his kid getting mono) I don't think Iowa needs to blow it all up. I feel like he has earned more good will then that from the fans. We don't owe him dick, but up until 2 months ago I was happy as shit with Fran as Iowa's coach. I don't swing that hard from 1 way to another cause I am balanced human being.

What I heard was we should have kept Lickliter cuz he brought in lil Lick. :)

We should have. But Gatens was a little bit better and he threatened to leave so a choice had to be made. If Cook threatens to leave if we keep Fran, we probably have to cut ties and lose his sons.

I don't know if Patrick is over rated or not. But if he is a legit top 30 player, you absolutely keep Fran because of him. Players win games, and Wieskamp is probably under rated if anything. If Patrick is somehow top 30, that's 2 top 30 type players in a row. When a coach at Iowa brings in that talent, you keep him and live with the coaching deficiencies.
If that’s the case than we should have hired Michael Porter’s Dad as an assistant coach. We should definitely have hired that coach from La Lumiere to land Tyler Campbell. If that’s the case we should fire Fran and hire Tom Crean. That guy can recruit at a higher level than Fran.

I would wager a small fortune, which I don’t have, that Pat doesn’t end up as a top 30 recruit, so it’s kind of a mute point anyway.

We all think Fran has stuck out on point guards, but maybe he knows something we don't about his son. Maybe Connor is the next Jeff Horner. He was good enough to finish near the top of the conference. Then again, maybe his judgement is clouded because it's his son too. We don't know yet.

There is no way he will end up top 30 because he committed to Iowa. The top 30 is reserved for guys who commit to blue bloods. And in my mind there's a difference between not firing your coach because his son is really good and coming in, and hiring someone else to bring in their son. Although I would be all for that too. Talent wins games.

But I was told that no other schools offered him cuz they knew he was going to commit to Iowa. Theoretically, he shouldn't have ever been ranked top 30 if everyone knew he was going to commit to Iowa...

It's not about him dropping because he committed to Iowa. It's about others jumping him because they committed to blue bloods or got lots of offers from big schools. It's easy to rank a guy like Wieskamp 16 before all the offers are out. Once offers start rolling in to everyone, they are going to rise while the guy committed to Iowa will get jumped. If you think about it, of course it works that way. It wouldn't really make sense for it not to.

Too bad we didn't hire Lavar Ball a few years ago.. Think how easy the problems would have been solved.

Team needs to be Much more aggressive, and to play Much tougher. They are being manhandled by some teams. Hawks are being smashed in the face over and over again. The opponents make it look innocent, just going for the ball, contesting a loose ball or rebound, However they are getting away with thug behavior.....

Happened in the clone game. Solomon Young was getting away with bloody murder. He and Brady were going for a loose ball and he smashed Brady in the side of the head, knocking him to the floor with force, then he stomped the floor next to Ellinson's head while continuing on down the floor. Don't believe they called a foul. Took Brady a while to get up.....

Later in the game, Young and Cordell were going for a loose ball on the sideline, Young wasn't even attempting to get the ball. He slammed into Pemsl and threw him out of bounds when he was off balance. Again no call other than denying the ball to whomever touched it last.....

In the Penn State game, Ryan Kriener faked a shot near the basket, making the PS player jump into the air over his head, on the way down he smashed Ryan in the head, causing a concussion. Again no foul called. Should have been a flagrant, just like Young's transgressions.....

In the Buckeye game Garza was smashed in the face going for a rebound. It was not inadvertent. It was deliberate and then he seemed to hit Tyler in the face while continuing his rampage. Again no foul called. I do not believe.....

The referees are letting them get away with this, Injuries have been caused, and it could be worse. On the other hand, we get called for little touches. This seriously affects the pace and style of the game for the Hawks. We can't afford to have players sitting on the bench, like Cook and Garza because of early touch fouls. The opponents have adopted this strategy. It has to stop.....

We have more than enough fouls to give. Wagner, Pemsl and Kriener have 15 fouls to obtain. They should be seriously hard fouls. Let us start putting these thugs on the floor, while avoiding a flagrant. Same as they are doing to us, over and over. if they want to play ThugBall. Ok Let's Play.....

Last season we had the reputation of being JunkYardDogs. Calhoun would mention this over and over. He loved the fight and never-say-die attitude the Hawks displayed. This season that attitude is obviously absent. We need to start playing Hard. If a MFer laughs in our faces and taunts the coaches and players on the bench, we need to make them pay for that.....

The Hawks play as tough as anyone who grew up on the streets of Philadelphia, like most of Penn State's roster, and anywhere else. Let's start to show our toughness and Fight Back.....

Fran knows about tough play. He grew up in Philadelphia, and now needs to let the Lads loose.....

Time to fight back.....

Typed this rather quickly, sort of a rant, and just might need to edit later on.....

Fair enough. We all have our opinions. By the way I think everyone who posts considers themselves balanced.

As far as last years team as I already pointed out I really don’t think they were anything special. KenPom had them at 71 (for reference you would like to be in the top 50ish to be a tournament due to auto bids from small schools). The only reason they sniffed the tournament was because they had some quality wins. They played better in the second half I’ll give you that.

Anyway you think they’re closer than I do to turning it around and that’s okay. I struggle with it too because I was a Fran supporter not long ago. I’ve always known the weaknesses were there in his coaching but we overcame them with our talent. I just don’t see that happening with what we have next year.

You're not a balanced human in this case, but rather slow as you stated above. And for some reason you're content to just watch the plane plummet until it crashes into the f'n mountain. The transfer of CW is not the problem. In fact his recruitment in the first place is the problem. Yet another recruit who had no business playing at this level. Same will be said for Connor. It's not that goddamn hard to land a decent pg. You know how I know that? Bc every shit team we've played so far has a better pg than us. Every single one!! That's piss poor recruiting. That "just 1 piece" you speak of...ain't coming in next year. And most likely not the following year. Maybe never as Fran has yet to prove in 8 years he can even recruit an avg B1G level pg.

Last years team was not special, but they were close and they did get better. They certainly weren't what we are watching right now. I don't blame you at all for your stance and it gets harder and harder for me to continue mine with how inept we look and all the while watching Fran continue to strut out 11 or 12 players when we have 6 to 8 that should play. That is my biggest issue and gripe with Fran. I hate the line ups.

The only bleeding going on is your fascination with playing devils advocate until everyone’s ears bleed. Root for a new team if you hate everything about Iowa.

Or you could put him on ignore. That would require you to have the intelligence to know how to do that. Which most of us doubt you have.

Here is where PMac stands in 4A Iowa for juniors:

PPG: 5th place
Steals per game: 8th place
Rbds per game: 11th place
Blocks per game: 15th place
Assists per game: 23rd place

That's only in the state of Iowa folks. Not a Top 30 recruit. Sorry.
So you need the best stats you be the best recruit? Got it
