Sally Mason Retiring

It will be announced that Mary Ferentz will be the new incoming president of the University of Iowa.

No, it has nothing to do with Jon and more that Tweeter is ignorant to the fact that a college president has a hell of a lot to do with the success of the University and the Athletic's Department as a whole.

That said there are far bigger problems with the University than Athletics that the next president needs to tackle, a lot of those issues if fixed correctly will not only help the University but will also help the Athletic Department.

Agreed. Sally lived and ruled inside of a box. She did whatever she wanted to do and she sheltered herself from having to provide explanations. That's not the way I want the leader of my favorite University to run things. She even sheltered herself from her own University newspaper (The Daily Iowan). It's pathetic. Why would anyone want someone in charge of a University who feels like she's above having to communicate with the outside world?

Just heard that. Awesome news. Well first road block gone. Next one... Barta.

I think you're right. Something smells a little fishy & he hasn't exactly been around or heard from much these past few days. Was he even at the press conference yesterday?

Ferentz spent 1000's of hours traversing the state of Iowa, meeting personally with donors and fundraising in the last three years to ensure Iowa got the facilities built it needed to be on par with the rest of the top football programs. This was critical to the future of Iowa football regardless of who the coach is. These efforts were extremely time consuming and didn't allow him to focus on his coaching duties as much as he felt he needed to. Iowa has a Top 15 in the USA loaded with money athletic department. Loaded because of the revenue generated by Ferentz's Hawkeye football teams over the last 16 years. Iowa had the money to build these facilities without making Ferentz lead a campaign to raise funds privately. Sally Mason was the policy leader that diverted funds to many various other departments thereby hurting the football program. She was also personally behind the restrictions placed on parking/tailgating/post game parties and eveything else fun on gamedays. I know it's hard to see when you have your head rammed up inside of your a** but.

Sally wasn't directly responsible for the tailgating changes. Do some research on the details involving the Think Before You Drink campaign. There were recommendations from a committee including Ferentz, Barta, ICPD, and others.

Dean, does Jon know you post under another user name as well?

Did Sally personally come by and seize all your tailgate likker? Did she cuff you for having a beer in your possession? Heck, my understanding was this a town-gown effort to clean up drunkenness, public urination, vomiting, litter and vandalism in and around Kinnick on game days. Many parties signed off on it, including Gary Barta and Kirk Ferentz.

Sorry if you can't get your drink on like you used to be able to do. But a lot of people objected to what was going on. From most accounts, the initiative succeeded.

I was just thinking of this, this morning. In administration, there are two kinds of individuals, there are innovators and leaders and there are maintainers. The maintainers just do enough to keep the ship afloat and maybe on course. The innovators are leaders who forge ahead & think outside the box and make a difference. I don't think either Mason or Barta were innovators, they merely maintained the programs.

We all know these kind of people from business.

Thank You BOP for doing a good job of putting it all into words. Nice Post

Yeah, I thought that was pretty classy ... whatever the hell it means.

Come on people ... It's a start and at least it is some kind of change. For the naysayers who keep saying this won't have an effect on the program, etc., how do you know that? It starts at the top. And as long as Sally Mason continued in her post the chances of anything changing within our athletic department were slim and none since Sally completely supports Gary.

It's a nugget of news that gives us something to enjoy for the time being. Change can be good people. I think we can all agree that SOMETHING needed to happen in Iowa City.

Whose the a-hole who thinks it's a must to thumb down every post from individuals. Seriously, thumbs down a thoughtful post on an opinion. What is the point to thumbs down this post. I guess if that makes you feel big, than so-be-it.

I noticed the same thing .. Some threads ... even with well thought-out comments will include the -1 no matter the post. So yes, it certain people just going through the entire thread and giving the thumbs down to everything ... No skin off my nose but when you read well-positioned comments .. even if they differ from mine ... I respect it. I guess it's powerful for the negative people in life to be able to wield their thumbs down power ... :)

Ah, but the low-information poasters here need someone to blame, someone to scapegoat for everything they think is wrong with the football program, apparently starting with the decision to change tailgating at the University of Iowa. That person? SALLY MASON!!!!

tweeter I support your right to your opinion. But its interesting how you are when the shoe is on the other foot. Keep Posting Brother

Bout time... Maybe they can get a not so leftist leaning person in there now that will put pressure on Barta. Wait all university presidents are lefties nevermind on that but at least whoever gets it will eventually want their own AD. Whens Bartas contract up? I think the timeline is this. Barta and Ferentz will both be gone by this time next year....(unless they real off 9 plus wins) I just don't see them having a good year next yr with a roster that I think will take a step back next yr not forward. If Ferentz has 7 wins next yr he's gotta go and there will be a new AD to make that hire to replace him.

Many posters say the football program needs to be changed. (I agree with this in a lot of ways) Many of those same people say it starts at "the top" and that Kirk has to go; even to going on incessantly about how inept Kirk is and how bad our program is.

Funny how those people believe that there are problems but think that "the top" is Kirk. If attitude is to be changed it truly does have to start at the top. Mason is "the top" as far as the University of Iowa is concerned. And her retiring is a first step in that change.

So, you're saying they're all part of the problem and need to go? Makes sense to me! ;)

Welp Tweets I know this is a dark day for you. Just take solace in the fact that nothing I did or said forced Sally to step down. This isn't about me, but rather Sally, and what she feels is right for both her and the university.

I am personally happy as what is going to happen next is the new president will bring in a new AD. What you still fail to admit Tweets is that our athletic department is nearly last in the B1G performance wise, and it is going to take a new AD and an entire makeover of the personnel and culture in that department before anything will get fixed.

Part 1 is now realized, and onto part 2.....Tweets are you on board with replacing Barta, or do you think our athletic departments results have been satisfactory these past 3-5 years?
