I don't perceive this being Jok's fault. He is manhandled every time he touchs the ball, I also do not believe he is 100% recovered from his injuries. Not his fault that he gets playing time. Perhaps he should not start, coming in off the bench. Could provide a quick boost. Would like to see Baer starting right now.
Our passing has suffered because we are standing around waiting for Jordan and Peter to take a hard earned shot. Need more motion and passing to implement the rest of the team in the offense. I am always amazed at the lack of any screening for Jok and Bohannon. Against Illinois there were many occasions when Peter and Jordan were bringing the ball downcourt, where we should have provided screens on the wings, where they are very efficient. But no screens at all, except a few stumbling attempts as the timeclock ticks away. Jordan is more effective when he shoots on the move, bringing the ball down, stopping, taking a step back or not, and launching. There have been a few times late in the game, crunch time, when he should have shot the ball instead of looking for a double covered Jok.
On Defense, we really need to approach the whole aspect more intelligently. Again not rocket science. Bottom line: Protect the Basket. How many times yesterday did Ilinois have uncontested layups or dunks, untouched all the way to the basket, this while our D was supposedly set, not all transition baskets. Even Nicholas, always the most intelligent basketball player on the court wherever we are playing, made a glaring mistake. Manbun was standing in the corner late in the game, crunch time, Baer was halfway between him and the basket, the ball went inside, two hawks were already under the basket, and Baer went to help out, leaving Manbun wide open by 10/15 feet to receive a pass and nail a three. Serious lapses in judgement need to be stopped.
However I was impressed by Tyler's D yesterday. Much better, Cordell coming around also. And Isaiah's D was outstanding, for the most part, especially when our 3/4 trap was in effect. When the trap is working, we do it as well as any team on the Planet.
This team has performed better that I expected, and at times worse than I expected. Lot of talent and ability there, with much more on the way. Only a fool would have anticipated the NIT this season. This is a REBUILDING year. Simply that. Now we are still outside the NIT bubble looking in, realizing that time is fast fading. I personally believe that if we win our last two at Carver, whether or not, we win a game in the BIG Tounament, we will be under consideration for the NIT.
Mere idle speculation on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
