PrimeTime League

To be fair, we knew where Mike was as a player and a Juco All American taking his spot was very reasonable.

yeah, I see that... but we DIDN'T know what Dickerson was, we just looked at his accolades and said "well, he'll definitely beat out a 2 year starter with 2 seasons in Fran's system". I honestly don't think the whole experience and time in the program comes in to many peeps minds when they are thinking about potential minutes for the next season. We just look at potential, accolades and run with it and bury the guys we currently have. We think we know who Wagner is too, but honestly, he's a much more known commodity then either of the Freshman at this point and at least early on, I expect him to play many more minutes.

It all depends on the accolades and the skill of the player with experience. I expect both freshmen to be better than the lone senior on the team. That's a half educated guess due to what we've seen from Uhl the last 3 years and the limited things we've seen and heard of the freshmen.

As for me personally, I always hope the new guys are an improvement over the old ones. It means we got an upgrade.

;) The best player on the team is the number 2 guy on the depth chart or the new guy. They're always better than the current starter or what's on the team.

GO HAWKS!!!

Talent, crying for a true PG...
Sucks for you. Iowa's freshman PG ended the season with three strait double-doubles while averaging 20+PPG. He did so well he got voted 1st team All B1G freshman. Oh, and he's only going to continue to get better. That's TRUE enough for me!

Pretty telling when our biggest concern is that he understands he can't hang on the rim like that in real games. :D

Seriously though, I imagine he'll be starting at the 5 by B1G play; maybe sooner.

My starting 5:

JBo
Moss
Baer (unless Fran wants to keep Baer's energy coming off bench).
Cook
Garza

He'd be even more explosive at the sg position. Imagine JBo being able to increase the # of shots per game by, say, 50%. Imagine a true gp being able to penetrate off the dribble and setting up the other four for 1-on-1 match ups or better. Think Moss, JBo, Cook wide open with the ball in their hands? But also think about a true pg, defensively. JBo cannot keep B1G pg's in front of him. JBo could be the most important player on the team if his job was to shoot and score.

This argument loses all his steam when you realize that JBo would still be on the floor and have to defend another guard. So does that solve Jbo's defensive issue? No. As we saw last year Moss can guard the PG, just as your "True PG" would, if he is the best guard on the opposing team

Second, why would you want to take the ball out of Jbo's hands? He averaged over 5 assists last year as a freshman, he's a very good distributor.

Would I like to see JBo running off some screens to get some looks? Absolutely, and I think Fran will implement that in the offense this year even with him at PG and yes that's possible.

I agree we lacked penetration from the PG spot, but your true PG would not be a lights out 3pt shooter like JBo. JBo is different but he is a good player. To me it's like if you were dating a hot blonde but complaining because you would rather have a brunette. Only Derek Jeter is allowed to complain about something like that.

Fran's teams have had 2 consistent deficiencies: lack of legitimate offensive/defensive post players and lack of a true point guard. We now have the legit bigs. We do not have a true point guard. You are certainly entitled to your opinions and I to mine. I don't view yours as without merit. What I am saying is to maximize JBo's real talent...shooting and scoring. I would gladly give up 5 apg for 5 additional 3 pnt shot opportunities. I'd do that in a heart beat because whoever does play pg, will get assists. you can create mismatches on offense by dribble penetration and causing help defenders to leave their man, or by excellent outside shooting that forces double teams and help defense. When considering Iowa's entire roster, who has the ability to dribble penetrate and who has the ability to shoot with excellence?

To answer your question quickly. Moss is our best penetrator. I'm hoping he does a lot of that this year with more touches.

This actually leads me right into my next point perfectly. What makes JBo much different from Brady Ellingson as a 2 guard? A lot of guys can shoot the ball. A lot of guys can score. Heck, I think Moss will have a nice increase in scoring with more shots this year.

I think Jbo's best talents are clearly his shooting ability, but as I said a lot of guys can shoot it. What separates JBo to me is his ability to shoot the 3 off the dribble, not many players can do that. This trait fits nicely for a PG. Second I like Jbo's ability to set up teammates for easy buckets in transition and feed the post. Again a nice trait for a PG.

About Jbo's penetration. It sounds like it's something he's working on. As defenders continue to have to chase him out behind the 3pt line, it may open up some opportunities for him, I certainly won't be surprised to see improvement in this area.

Let's agree to disagree. I feel JBo is (or will be) an elite shooter. When you have an "elite" you utilize it, you maximize it. Each time JBo has the ball in his hands and he isn't thinking to shoot, our offense suffers just that little bit. I really believe that JBo could lead the nation in scoring next season if he were to play at least half his minutes at the sg and take 12 3 pnt shots a game and 15+ shots, altogether.

I usually agree with your posts so I'm really surprised to see you take the "true point guard" route. Bohannon is the best point guard we've had since Woolridge. If we replaced him with a true point guard who could penetrate, he would either be a big downgrade at everything else or he would be one of the best players in the nation.

And you talk about needing our point guard to set up other players. That is precisely what Bohannon is doing at an elite level.

I think it's just as likely he would get less shots a game running off screens as it is he would get more.

One of my other points earlier is that even at PG we can find more way to run him off screens and get him open shots. I think Fran will do more of that this year. Check out this video at around the 1:20 mark. (Actually watch the whole thing, great shot of a JBo drive and floater which I think we will see more of this year and great example of Jbo's ability to shoot off the dribble). Anyways OT vs Michigan and you will see the tail end of a play where Bohannon ran off a double screen for a 3pt shot. There's nothing that says a PG can't get screens set for him during a possession.
