Not trying to overreact to their first PTL game but if Garza and Nunge are both competing for minutes and I honestly can't see Kriener not competing for some minutes as well. Baer, Cook, Wagner and Pemsl have already proved they deserve minutes.
Sometimes having fresh guys to throw in and a deep rotation is nice but sometimes it's hard for guys to get into the flow as well playing in short spurts. The playing time for the Bigs this year will be interesting to watch as the season plays out. I could see the rotation starting deeper earlier in the year and narrowed as the season progresses.
I don't see how Baer will be able to play one minute at the 4 this year. It looks like we have 5 guys that will be hard to keep off the floor that can only play the 4 or 5 spot. How do you do a 5 man rotation for 2 spots? And that doesn't even include Wagner or Uhl.
Given that Baer is one of the better rebounders on the team there will be times where he will have to play the 4. Matchup and game situations will dictate that.
Baer will be a jack of all trades guy for this team. He has to be. He will bounce from that 3 and 4 spot quite a bit.
Dailey is one guy that I hope gets to see a lot of minutes this year. It would be nice if he and Moss were to start at off guard and small forward. Bohannon is probably going to start at the point with Cook at power forward. Garza and Kriener will probably split time at center.
While I would agree with you that Baer plays well at the 4, with number of bigs that the Hawks have this year that can only play the 4 or 5, Baers mins will only be at the 3 this season. I think Nunge could be in the same boat where he gets most if not all his minutes at the 3. Garza, Cook, Pemsl, Kriener, and Wagner can all only play 4 or 5 since they can only guard the 4 or 5. I can see very limited situations where we are playing a team that only plays 1 post player and Baer has to play the 4 but since we have fewer guards I don't see that happening much. Defensively I see us playing a lot of zone this year.
He is Iowa's best rebounder and that's coming off the bench. I went back and looked at the box score of both Purdue games and he was Iowa's leading rebounder in both games. I chose Purdue because they had the big frontcourt.
I realize Nunge/Garza are wildcards in this, but I still stand by that Baer will have to play some 4 based on matchups and game situations.
I do think Fran will "go small" in some instances and play Baer at the 4, but I just don't see it being that often. That means he would have to have Jordan, Moss, (Ellingson/Dailey/Williams) in the game at the same time to push Baer to the 4 spot. I just don't see how that is good for Iowa to go small when they are much stronger in the front court than they are in the wing positions.
Right now I see Baer as Pemsl/Cook's backup at the 4. I am not sure what to do with Garza/Nunge just yet without getting a feel of what type of game they have.
Baer was Iowa's best rebounder last year and I am trying to think did he do most of that from the 3 spot or the 4?

I think Baer is more of a hustle rebounder than a box out power rebounder. It seems like he can get hustle rebounds from the 3 just as easily as he could the 4.
