PrimeTime League

Wagner is going to play a significant roll during his next 2 years. He's never going to be an offensive juggernaut but he's not a complete liability either. He will definitely get minutes. Uhl, well, I hope his minutes come back, but he's got a place too. I will be interested to see how Fran manages it all.

Im just not sure what Wagner gives you that another player won't give you more of? To me Wagner is like a poor man's Tyler Cook. Strong and athletic around the basket, but not much of an outside shot to speak of. Obviously Cook is miles ahead offensively.

Luka Garza is already taller and bigger (not stronger) than Wagner, and Garza appears to be solid offensively as well.

Kreiner has a nice shot for his size, Nunge seems like he's going to grab instant minutes, and lets not forget about Pemsl.

Wagner played 16 minutes per game last year. Do you really think that number is going up? I don't see how it goes anywhere but down...and way down.

I dunno if they go up - but IMO, he was still developing last season and actually played some significant minutes in some big spots. I don't think that a Junior that has been gradually climbing in relation to roll is going to suddenly take a step back to guys their first year in the system. If you are right, (which I am not saying you are or aren't, just offering my opinion) that's probably a great thing.

Oh I love Wagner, I think he's a great role player and has a great attitude and hustle. I just have such high hopes for Garza/Nunge/Cook/Pemsl that I don't know where any of Wagner or Kreiner's minutes come from. Its a good problem to have.

Agree - I expect all of those guys to have higher minutes when all said and done. I think Fran will lean on Wagner early this year tho and his minutes will fall back as the other bigs develop

Wagner is more consistent defensively at least compared to where Cook/Pemsl/Kriener were at last year. Maybe one of those three or one of the newcomers shows consistent defense at some point this year but to begin the year Wagner will get some minutes die to his defense. Not 16 MPG but I can see 7-10 MPG.

I do believe that Wagner is an essential part of the team, same as he was last season. His toughness and strength is needed, especially in the Big. I do remember that we would not have won at Wisconsin if he had not grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to JBo for the murderous trey....

Wasn't it Pemsl that grabbed that rebound though?

Not disagreeing with you on Wagners importance but we have a loaded front court and somebody's minutes have to drop for Garza and Nunge to get on the court. Wagner and Uhl being the most likely to lose PT.

Yeah it was Pemsl

Damn my eyes.....

As Garza and Nunge adjust to the game, minutes will fall for others, for certain.....

Nice problem to have.....

Ahmad is the type of guy that you can play him defensively at a lot of positoins, and offensively he definitely won't hurt the team. Iowa will have a lot of fire power this year that they can use a definsive specialist.

I must agree.....

Bear is going to have to play the 3 based on need.

I think we could see a lot more Zone D this year. I hope Cook will play his natural position of a 4 so hopefully Kriener or Garza can start as a bigger body at the 5.

It's the classic Hawkeyenation off season for hoops where we all insert the guys who haven't played a second of college basketball for guys going into their 3rd or even 4th year in the system. Trey Dickerson was going to start over Mike a few years back - Flemming and Hutton too. I am excited as anyone about these 2 guys potential, but I'll pump the breaks on either of them playing more than upperclassman until they do.

Wagner had a monster steal and layup at UW when we were pressing at the end.

He brings defensive versatility (he has the foot speed of a guard but the strength of a big). Last year he guarded Tony Carr the PG from PSU for part of that game. He also brings offensive rebounding.

Unfortunately for him he is undersized and will have to battle several others for minutes who are likely more skilled offensively and more natural fits at his position.

I get where you're coming from but I don't think there was near as much buzz around the guys you mentioned. I think Nunge and Garza are going to end up being more like Cook in that they are physically developed enough to contribute right away and have a really good skill set.

I don't know what to expect from Wagner. I certainly think Nunge and Garza are more offensively skilled so on paper they look like the better player but Wagner brings athleticism, toughness and a motor which makes me think he'll find a way to be productive and be one of the guys that you just can't keep out of the lineup.

Trey Dickerson was a JUCO All American and the off-season he came in Mike was going to be a Junior - and 90% of the potential line up threads from that off-season had him starting over Mike. I wish I were joking, but hindsight is 20/20. I think Nunge and Garza are both immediate contributors, but I wouldn't bury the current roster for them their freshman season. If I'm wrong, that's a great problem.

To be fair, we knew where Mike was as a player and a Juco All American taking his spot was very reasonable.
