Playing out of position

I don't think Fran could get good point guards to come to Iowa with Connor committed. That's my honest opinion and it's not really Fran's fault. It's not like his kids are scrubs. I know if I was recruiting a PG against Fran, I'd absolutely use it as a tool to convince the recruit that Fran will play his son over said recruit. And I'd have a valid argument. According to sources in the program, Christian Williams was getting 3rd team practice reps at PG, with Connor getting 2nd steam reps. CW had put 2 years into the program and was bumped by the coach's kid. And rightly so, IMO, because I believe Connor is the better player. But every coach will use that against Fran for the next 4 years, when recruiting for players in Connor's or Patrick's positions.

What PGs were we getting before that? Gesell, Clemmons, but who else?

Interesting about CW getting #3 reps, this is the first I've read that. It's even more puzzling considering that, up to the point CW decided to leave, the assumption was that Connor was going to redshirt.

It's pretty apparent Connor wasn't going to end up redshirting. No way you put a kid at backup who isn't going to see the court over a kid who really needs the experience. Hopefully once Connor got to practice, it was obvious that he was too good to keep off the court.

But we didn't hear about it until the announcement of CWs leaving...

Gessel and Clemons are better than anything we currently have. They could defend.

How did Loyola win playing so many guys out of position?
Most teams are playing at the very least 3 guards. Meaning the 2 & 3 spots are basically interchangeable, with the 1 spot being the PG.

Now 3 of the 4 final four teams are actually playing guys who used to be called 3s at the 4. Playing out of position only really hurts you defensively, but these teams are taking the calculated risk that what they give up in terms of size at the 4 spot will be more than made up for on the offensive end with the ability to spread the floor and create mismatches.

Iowa is doing the complete opposite. While these teams might be playing some bigger “3s” at the 4 spot, Iowa is playing 5s at the 4 spot and 4s at the 3 spot. I was calling almost all season for Fran to play these smaller lineup as I noticed that is what most successful teams were doing. The proof is in the pudding as they say, as Iowa had one of the worst seasons in program history.

The fact of the matter is that true back to the basket post up play is going by the wayside in basketball, it’s just not an efficient strategy. Basketball is a finesse game and it’s a guards game.

This one is dumb even by your standards? Did Fran lie all summer or did things change after Connor started practicing? Duh man.

Fran said Connor was planning on redshirting until Williams left. Glad to know he was lying to us by saying that!

That part he probably was lying on. It sounds like he was planning on red shirting right up until the decision to transfer. It probably became clear Connor needed to play this year, so Williams saw the writing on the wall and left. Fran should have threw him under the bus and call him a pussy for not being able to handle competition instead of lying to us.

Even if Connor was guaranteed to redshirt this year at Iowa, Williams was not going to be playing this year and was likely going to leave. He had hip surgery. He would have missed significant time. He likely saw that by the time he would be recovered, Maishe and Connor would have the opportunity to pass him in the rotation. Then the following year, two more guards were being brought in. I would have left too, but no one is going to be able to predict that injury. Therefore, no one would foresee the transfer either. Just honest depictions of a situation involving horrible luck all around.

You think that Connor showed up in practice and started showing Fran (his dad) something that he hadn't seen before? That forced Fran to make the change? You can't be serious with this. You're joking, right? My sarcasm detector is broken?

C’mon now, you’re a coach you’re smarter than that. It’s not about what Fran did or didn’t think Connor could do, it’s about what Connor proved he could do in practices going up against teammates. I can’t think of a quicker way to lose a locker room than to show up and put your son above someone else on the team before he actually proved himself to his teammates.

I get what you are saying but that's not what PC was saying, I don't think. Unless I misunderstood.
But to address your bigger point, this is what I have been arguing for the last 3 years. It's why Fran can't recruit the 1 and the 2 spots. Every recruit worth an offer is fearful of that very situation. The Head Coach's kid shows up and doesn't have to earn anything. Real or imagined, it's a huge problem to overcome in recruiting.

I agree with that. I think it’s hurt recruiting no question.

I think Fran had a pretty good idea how it might all play out. But if practice started and he was so clearly a better option that everyome on the team could see it, it could change plans pretty quick.

This has been brought up before, but I figured I'd reiterate: Williams was not going to be playing this year and was likely going to leave. He had hip surgery. He would have missed significant time. Fran didn't find this out until the injury. Completely derailed plans.
