Peyton Mansell in Transfer Portal

All of the recent QBs that have transferred (Ruddock, Sokol, Weigers, Boyle) have had good success. At Iowa they are forced to not only throw the ball, but to call protections, switch running plays at the line of scrimmage, and go through a series of progressions on deep drops. All of that stuff pays off in terms of growing their grasp of the game. I would anticipate Mansell to have good success as well. I think he is on track to graduate this spring, so he should be able to transfer with 2 years of eligibility.

@RobHowe , any idea if he plans on going through spring drills (like Nixon did last year while he was in the portal)?

I've reached out to him and have not heard back. He told me back in the spring he was on course to graduate this spring. I would think he'd wait until he did that before moving on if that was still the case. He could then he a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility at any FBS school.

Predicable domino falling there. Hope he finds a good fit for him. Iowa is the opposite of Oklahoma. We bring in QBs and coach them up and develop em so they can go help another school. Oklahoma lets other schools recruit and develop QBs so they can have them transfer in for a yr and dominate. Like 3 yrs strait they've brought in transfers to start at QB for them. Different strokes for different folks. More then one way to built teams.
All that hype around Riley as a coach but he's yet to have a QB he's recruited play let alone do really well. Just a thought.

Same with Michigan and Harbaugh. He's been reliant on sloppy seconds in every strong season he has had there.

Hijack alert - did anyone notice what appeared to be a disproportionately high number of guys named "Peyton" in the UT-IU game the other night?

Good kid. Not surprised he's leaving...passed on the depth chart, has a wife in Texas. Hope he finds a good opportunity closer to home. Somebody's getting a good QB.

There are a bunch of great lower tier programs in Texas. He could be a great fit. He’s had 3 great years of coaching in IC. I predict he’s starting next year at a school like North Texas, texas state or UTSA.

So that means not a grad transfer? Is he hoping to win an appeal for immediate eligibility?

Damn, having your wife that far away takes a toll on a man real quick - let alone for a few years. It wouldn't surprise me if that alone is the reason why he's leaving. Best of luck to him.

I did not have time to ask. He was busy trying to find his new school.

He has been here for two and a half years. I suppose he could have his diploma but I do not think he does.

He could be going down a level or he could just want to start spring ball in his new system or both.

Depending on the Staff's confidence in Petras, this seems like it could be a great year to bring in a proven and experienced Grad Transfer QB to help lead an offense with most of its weapons back no?

I never say never in this business, but that would surprise me. I think it's Petras in '20.
Exactly. I highly doubt it. I think Iowa likes the recipe of developing a QB and riding him for 2 or 3 yrs. It'd take an absolute stud of a QB looking to transfer in for Iowa to have mutual interest. Not impossible but I don't think Iowa's coaches are combing through the transfer portal looking at QBs

Welp there goes the QB competition. Petras has his Union Card. Everyone ready for the next couple of years no matter how it goes?
