Nunge Rumor

In Fran's mind, Nunge was too good to keep off the floor, but not good enough to earn minutes at the 4. Nunge should have known that before he committed. I would have rather seen him at the 4 over Pemsl, but that was probably too close of a call to fall into the "getting jerked around" category.

Nunge ha
Nunge played zero defense though...that was his main problem. For an entire team that played horrible defense, Nunge was king. The last time we really saw him on the season he got embarrassed by Mo Wagner.

I think the 3 is where Nunge has the best chance of sticking because Fran loves himself some Pemsl and you know Garza/Cook are gonna get 30 minutes each next year.

I think Nunge got added back in the starting lineup for defensive reasons. I think the team benefited greatly by having his length at the top of the zone.

I'd love for Nunge to end up at the front of the press and the top of the zone. Uthoff and White both excelled in those roles.

Hey Rob, when do you think we should we expect to hear about Ellingson transferring if he decides to?

Fran met with the players last week. They're on spring break this week. I would say we should start hearing something as early as next week. It's a fluid situation. Guys usually don't announce they're leaving until they look into where they can go.

I don't disagree, I just don't see how Nunge gets that many minutes playing the 4 or the 5. Garza and Cook are going to get 27+ minutes each next year. Factor in 15 minutes for Pemsl (for some reason), 10 minutes for Kriener and Wagner...there's not that much left.

Meanwhile Baer became a massive liability at the 3 this year. Maybe Wieskamp can take some of those minutes next year, but the 3 seems like the best place for Nunge to get minutes.
That’s the issue. Kriener and Pemsl are good enough to play at this level and Fran is loyal to the point where he will play them. My point is that in the best interest of the team, neither of those guys deserve many minutes. Cook, Garza, and Nunge should play 90% of the minutes at the 4 and 5.

I gotta disagree. He played D. He sometimes (often) was playing out of position and when he got matched up against a smaller quicker 3 he'd get blown by. But he played pretty well against 4s and I don't know this without looking it up for sure but he may have lead the team in blocks in what little mins he played. He was disruptive when he was put out front on the press. I think your beating him up a little too much in this regard. Wagner beat up on a ton of folks this year btw. No shame in that.

Bottom line is Fran’s concern about playing everyone really cost this team during the season and now may cost it dearly after. You can’t keep that many guys happy but Fran seemed to care more about it than winning games. It turns out no one was happy - big surprise. Go with the best guys and which was about 7-8 guys max on this roster not 10-11.
This +1000

Nunge is a starter next season; particularly, if Cook leaves. And, he will have to play the 4 a large percentage of his minutes. Pemsl does not play in front of Nunge next season. If Cook leaves, I see Pemsl and Wagner staying. If Cook stays, I see Pemsl and Wanger leaving. Nunge is penciled in.

FWIW - Pat Harty said on the All Hawkeyes PC Friday that he still expects 2 to 3 to leave but said he thought Garza and Nunge were both solidly committed to the Hawkeyes.

Nunge will be a solid part of the team next year if he stays. The guy was learning this year. Once he learns the system his size and athletic ability should shine next year. I can see if 2 or 3 guys leave this year Fran bringing in a fifth year transfer, but I can't see anyone starting over the guys already on the team unless it is a defensive specialist with the possible exception of Wieskamp. If they are injury free next year, they should be a lot better.

So..we're talkin' ... Ellingson, Dailey, and possibly Cook? Is that his 2-3?

Speculate

I just hope Nunge has a little patience and can overcome his coaching to a degree. Uthoff wasn't the Uthoff we all remember his SR year back when he was 19 either... Far from it actually and Nunge is a heck of a lot closer to it at the same stage. Nunge would have been much better suited to RS (as was Uthoff who sat out 2 yrs) then play right away like he did but evidently that's not as much of a thing nowadays when everyone wants to play a lot right away and go to the NBA ASAP.
Whatever happened to developing kids at this level rather than just seeing what your skill set is and if it'll translate to the NBA or not? If kids like Cook, Garza, Nunge can commit to sticking around and developing they can get really really good in 3 or 4 yrs. Expecting to be NBA ready after even a year of college takes a special type of talent that most don't have. I know the world is all about trying to get that first big pay day and keep em coming. I can't blame a kid or anyone for going that route. It just stinks as a college basketball fan how that affects the game and the school I root for.

He said he was just going off of rumors he's heard and wouldn't want to speculate.... but he said a couple of times that he thought Luka and Jack were both solidly in for the long haul. He could definitely be wrong - just passing on the info he's been saying on their show

if cook stays, i'd speculate the 3 could be wagner, pemsl and ellingson. daily will get his minutes next season. he actually has some ability to take people off the dribble. he's 6'6" and is pretty fast/quick. that's my opinion.

I say wagner and pemsl because i think you have to play kriener next season. his game is almost identical to Garza's. you've got the 5 spot locked down with those two. Nunge will get minutes. Period. Baer might even come off the bench again next season. so, if cook comes back, kriener and nunge with get the minutes Pemsl and Wagner got this season. i'm sorry about pemsl, but unless he starts taking and making 15 jumpers, he's just another dude.

Who's to say that Fran didn't want to RS Jack and Jack didn't want to? You can't always convince kids it's in their best interests to sit out. I think a likely scenario that was laid out to Jack was that there wasn't going to be a lot of 4 minutes with TC in front of him and he was told that from the start. Is there a chance that Jack said, "look, I'll play the 3 or the 4, I just want to play THIS season and contribute" and that's what the staff tried to do? He ended up playing a lot of minutes for a Freshman who had a player the caliber of TC in front of him at his position. How many B1G schools are playing him more minutes then what he got this year with a player like TC in front of him? I can't imagine he's upset at all about his PT or development.

i should maybe clarify that I like and probably prefer Nunge at the 4, but as long as Tyler Cook exists, he's not going to play many minutes there. Nunge can have an immediate impact as a 3 on this roster if he can adjust to the position.

Nunge this year was like Moss last year. He started a lot, you could see the talent was there, but there were too many mistakes and Fran didn't trust him when it mattered.

Who knows right now if any of this is true. Rumors swirl in every sport every off-season.

That said, I posted a few weeks ago that IMO Nunge was a potential transfer casualty. Nothing solid to base that on, but rather it's just a gut feeling. To me, his facial expressions and body language just screamed unhappiness and a struggle with confidence. Combine that with being a freshman away from home for the first time, and one can see the writing on the wall.

There is uber-potential there, so I hope he guts it out, but I certainly wouldn't be shocked.

To me that's asking a lot from a dude that's 6'11 230ish.. It's pretty much unfair to even ask of most. Maybe against certain teams and certain individual players he can. But for Iowa to throw out there the Nunge, Cook and Garza front line means we have to play zone at the defensive end pretty much in the half court. I would love for Nunge to get most of Pemsls mins at the 4 backing up Cook. That alone would be better then what we had going on most of last yr

Very true. We have no clue how that may have all went down to start the year. If Nunge all but demanded to not RS then the staff wasn't going to force him to due to wanting him to stay obviously too. So It's hard telling if he's bent out of shape or not. I would hope after some time goes by he'll realize in 2 or 3 yrs he'll be a heck of a stud if he works hard and stays patient.
