No way Paterno survives this if he knew.

If Joe Pa knew and he didn't go to the authorities or at least follow up and make sure the AD did, then he is guilty and should be punished as need be.

There is nothing to praise Paterno about here. He, like everybody else involved, should be held responsible for failing to report this to authorities.

It seems that the entire state of Pennsylvania is afraid to take on/down the legend that is Paterno... which is why things like this will continue to happen.

And my problem with joe is not only his failure to report it to law enforcement, but also with his apparent decision to let Sandysky remain as an insider to the PSU program. Seems like this decision allowed Sandusky to prey on even more young kids. Sickening.

my wife used to work for a university doing PR among other things, and here are her thoughts on it:

she couldn't understand why they wouldn't have reported it to the authorities immediately. this situation could (and probably will) have some big name donors pulling their money from the program. better to report and take your lumps than to be found covering for a pedophile and have criminal, civil, and serious financial repercussions. the PSU president can stonewall the media, but you better believe that the high roller donors are calling and demanding answers. she said that she wouldn't be surprised if there was a completely new administration next year, depending on who knew what. the board of regents may clean house depending on their scope of authority in PA.

Hard to praise Paterno in this case. Pains me to say that because he always seemed like one of the good guys.

Don't most (all?) states have laws that require school administrators and teachers to report suspected child abuse cases to authorities? Department of Human Services or Child Welfare Services? It sounds like PSU did not do all it could to stop a predator.

By not letting him bring boys to PSU after the incident in question tells me that the U believed he was a predator and their concern was only with the U and not with the victim or any future victims. The U was in fact an enabler to pedophilia and this is going to be an extremely ugly proceeding for PSU, and rightfully so.

I agree with all of the posters who think Paterno had a responsibility to go to the authorities. However that had to be a tough position to be in. I am sure they were great friends and Sandusky's organization has helped a lot of children. It doesn't mitigate what he did, and likely grew out of guilt from his actions. My guess would be that Paterno steps down after this season and this will be the major reason why.

so, graduate assistant sees Sandusky with youngster in locker room shower late at night in 2002 and he stayed on staff through 2009?

Is that right? All sounds pretty fishy.

He was off the staff before the incident.Ended in 1999, 3 years before the incident. Reading, a life long skill that can't be replaced.

Paterno did go the University and the police. But what else can he do? It was the responsibility of the grad assistant since he saw the incident. Paterno heard about it from him. That means all he has is hearsay. You know they have an objection for that in court right? That is not enough to do anything with. He notified the authorities, who should have been doing some digging, and if they didn't that is on them. He wasn't a staffer, and didn't sound like he had any connections to the program other than he was friends with the former staffers who worked with him.

Wrong. As part of his "retirement/resignation Sandusky was given a key to the fb complex, an office, a computer, and apparently unfettered access to the locker room. Joe had to have known about and signed off on this. For all intents and purposes he was still part of the fb program long afterwards. That's where I think in the long run there's going to be some serious legal liability for the U and joe.

If I found out my best friend was raping 10 year olds, there would be no decision. I'd make sure he had nothing further to do with my program and/or facilities and would do everything in my power to put the piece of garbage in prison.

Too bad the AD isn't also a bishop in the Catholic Church.

He wouldn't have anything to worry about then. He could have then just moved Sandusky to a different position within the PSU Athletics Department instead of Sandusky having to "retire". Then Sandusky could have carried on for another 20 years or so.

A bishop doesn't have to answer to the law. At least not all of the law the rest of us have to answer to.
