i am trying to piece together from what i have seen of recruits on video and live and the current players that will be back next year what we will look like. and my take is the record will not be great but we will really like the product and the path as the players get older.
lets start with the starting 5. i see it as gessell at the point, oglesby at the 2, marble at the 3, basabe at the 4, and woodbury at the 5. so 2 frosh, 1 soph, and 2 jr. i really like white as our 6th man so i dont have him in the 5 but i could see it happen.
i also think that we will see two things get much better next year. the defense and the rotation. i believe fran's d philosophy is built around length. something we didnt have when he got here and now are getting when you look at marble and white and olesani, etc. my main complaint is the lack of a good rotation from my view but i think that is because of the lack of point guard depth and next yr that will be taken care of because by my count we will have 2 true pts and 3 that handle good enough to play it if needed (marble, oglesby, ingram).
now for individual player thoughts.
gessell - this kid is a flat out scorer and creator. the weakness ive heard is that he isnt a great defender but he looks long for his height. finally will have a true pt that we know what we are getting. hopefully he can adapt to college quick cause pg is the hardest position for frosh imo.
oglesby - dead eye dick type shooter and seems to be able to take it to the hole better than gatens. best thing for him that gatens didnt have is he wont have to be #1 scorer and will be able to move and find holes and knock it down as the secondary option.
marble - can finally play his natural position. we will see him ave 17 pts next yr and it will be great. love his game and pg has just made him a better ball handler.
basabe - dont put wt on him he is good where he is. i think he comes to play going 10 and 10 to average a double double.
woodbury - this kid has skill at 7 ft. he can move. toughest thing is can he get used to the physicality of the college game quick. i see him going 6 pts 8 rebs.
white - 6 man is awesome when they average 14 pts and bring that energy. he is a guy i could see starting at 3 or 4 but then you lose either ogelsby or woodbury and his energy off the bench is great.
mccabe - will be a solid sub for the 4 and 5 spots as a smart player who has added bulk and become a lot tougher down low than i thought he would.
olesani - this kid is a straight up athlete. i see him coming in at the 5 and just blocking shots and rebounding like an animal. reggie evans-esque. hope he develops cause he is raw in bball skill.
may - defensive stopper on the wing and needs to buy into the spot because he is athletic and strong enough to be great at it. could bring similar energy as white only on the defensive end.
ingram and clemmons (sp?) - might have mixed these 2 up on who is who. i believe ingram is kind of the combo guard that is pretty stocky and clemmons is more of a defensive pg. both will give great depth at the 1 and 2 spots.
meyer - adds depth at the 4 and 5 but probably needs to add the most bulk wise because i dont think he has white's skill set to play so thin.
depth is a key. and we will finally have it so we can press and not get tired and if it isnt somebody's day we can get them out of there. think about 5 guys who can man the point. 3 guys can play sg. 4 guys can play the 3. 4-5 can play the 4 and 4-5 can play the 5. think of the lineups we could have and match ups we could finally match up against small and big teams.
i really like what fran is building and see ncaa tourney when this incoming class are sophs.
