New Tailgating Rules

What are your thoughts about the enforcement of the new tailgating rules today?

A lot of tickets being written?

I planned on doing a rant on this later, but didn't want to be a naysayer on an otherwise positive day for Iowa. So I'll be brief. The new tailgating rules are ridiculous and they simply have sucked the life and atmosphere out of tailgating. The cops were jerks as expected. If you want to sit quietly and sip your beer and eat a burger, then tailgating is for you. If you like to listen to music and have some fun (within reason) then tailgating is no longer a viable option.

I'm fine with what their doing, its not like these are new laws or anything, their simply enforcing them after letting things slide too far. IMO Too many people have made game days about the alcohol and not the football.

Also heard a girl state "Yeah, I got 4 M.I.P's (Minor in possession which runs $735 or so) sorry I like to party". After that I can see why they are cracking down.

Well when the cops came into the Myrtle lot at 6am and immediately walked over to a few guys listening to music and said "shut off the music, pack your $hit up and get out of here", I have a problem with that. They did NOTHING other than have their music too loud. They didn't say, "hey you have to turn that down". They told them they had to leave. The only reason they ended up not leaving, is they said they already had too much to drink and were not going to drive and get an OWI. So the cops did not make them drive out then. My brother recorded this whole even and plans on putting it on Youtube to show how big of ****** the cops are and how tailgating has been destroyed. Saturdays are about football yes, but they are also about the entire experience which tailgating is a huge part of. The atmosphere at Myrtle was dead today. You could not play flippy cup or listen to music even remotely loud. I have tailgated there for 10 years, today was my last day there ever. I'm sure the cops are not much better elsewhere, but I want to remember my days at Myrtle as fun, and it no longer is fun there.

Bud while the atmosphere took a hit at Myrtle today I noticed something strange. That was the lack of cops in the area. I saw the guy in the patrol car at 6 and one other set of 4 around 9 A.M. The group of 4 told us we can't play beer pong after looking at our tables with about 50 plastic cups all over them. (we were playing flippy cup but stopped when we saw them). After that we stopped because we didn't want to get in trouble. I am almost to your point also. Next week I'm going to try Finkbine golf course but have heard horror stories there too. I don't need to play drinking games but all the stories of how the atmosphere is being sucked out of tailgating doesn't excite me.

To be honest I thought some of the new rules were more of scare tactic into behaving. It sound like they were more then that. Also if they don't want us to relieve ourselves in the woods maybe put in more porta-potties. It seemed like they actually took some away in Myrtle at least.

Maybe it is time that fans just come to one game, not drink, and not spend money at the stands around the stadium before the game or at any businesses including taverns in Coralville or Iowa City before or after the game. When the game is over, just leave Iowa City and Coralville and not spend any money whatsoever...no dinners, nothng, just go home.

Let the business owners deal with the City council and the University and the police. That would be a LOT of money that a LOT of people would lose on a Saturday. No tailgating...no spending money in Coralville or Iowa City.

I'm not talking about letting people get fall down drunk but what they are doing now is absurd, completely absurd. The only way to make your voice known is through THEIR pocketbook...ONE Saturday with people just leaving town and not spending money would certainly get their attention would it not... It would also be fun to watch and watch business owners reactions to the City Council and University...

It really didn't seam to effect me too much today I just didn't walk around with open beer. But my family did decide to get rid of our parking spot that we have had for years basically out of principle. I'm not going to pay over $1000 so I can be told to leave or turn down my music. I will just host tailgates at my house and show up at game time. Not as good as the old days, but hopefully the team will be better and that is all that really matters.

I too, was in the Myrtle Lot and saw the cops go Barney Fife on those guys under the Hawkeye tent. About an hour later a group of four cops were walking through and two of the cops nicely asked a group of adults in their 30's and 40's to put their "bottle" away. The last one then walked up, grabbed the bottle and poured it out...what a jerk. These people weren't getting smashed, they were enjoying a drink. It seems there are different standards set by different depts.

The atmosphere was muted today, and was very disappointing. We will hit the Library Lot next week. Last year we never saw police walk that lot.

I will be contacting the athletic dept, President Mason's office and the Iowa City police, not to rant but will point out some of the failures in implementing this new policy. If you felt there were abuses (and there were), voice your disapproval.

I walked to the stadium my usual way (thru the Dental lot)....everyone seemed to be having a good time. The tailgaters outside the Rec Building and the west side of Kinnick seemed to be having a good time also.

I saw no evidence of the atmosphere being "sucked out". Maybe to the booze hounds who need alcohol to "have fun"...but that's just too bad.

As for the music....sorry, but no one has the right to blast their music and "force" it on the people around them. Maybe other people want to be able to hear themselves talk. Maybe other people don't like the crap being played so loud you can hear it in the adjoining lot.

Right on. Screw those boozehounds. While we're at it. We should totally get rid of that song about Heaven and beer. I mean, it's college. It is completely unacceptable that people drink in college. They are there to study.

It did seem they cut back on the number of Port-O-Potties. The lines were incredibly long today. Longest I've ever stood in line by far.

Two things I noticed today... First unlike another poster the cops were all over the place. We saw them in packs of 2-4. Typically we only see two and that's early in the day. Today they were all over the place all day. Definitely trying to make a statement. Second I saw several tickets being written and it appeared that the cops believed in equal opportunity for all age groups.

They normally travel in packs of 2-4, except during the rut. Then they separate and attempt to mate in order to breed new cops. Sometimes during the rut they are so intense they even racially profile white people. Oh, I just went there.

If you are talking about me. I was talking about the Myrtle lot specifically. Last year it seemed every 5 minutes you would see a group of 2 officers. This year I only saw the patrol car early and the pack of 4 mid tailgate. Maybe they didn't make there way to me like other spots in Myrtle but there did seem less of them in Myrtle. My thinking was they were patrolling the other lots so they did not have the resources to patrol Myrtle like last year.

Exactly! Screw those people for having fun! I mean they have been having fun forever, at least the last 50 years, WELL before they made these laws.

But now that we have those laws, get rid of that crap already!

Interesting post and I think in the big picture the economic impact that NewMexHawk refers to may force some of this to change. I just don't see this issue going away. The law enforcement agencies don't seem totally onboard as it puts a strain on their resources. I don't see where the money comes from to pay for the extra law enforcement. And it hardly seems a cost effective use of taxpayer dollars given the budget shortfalls of most state and local governments. If the University has a larger agenda here of eventually banning all drinking on University property I think you would see a backlash that would adversely impact the business community around Iowa City.

Maybe the shortage was due to a large number of these "potties" being over by the Marriott for all the Fry Fest festivities.

That was a city & university sponsored event. They can have as much booze and porta-potties as they want! They had a valid permit, rubber stamped by the same people hosting it. So stop it already!!!

Sorry, but anyone who needs alcohol to have fun has a problem. I saw PLENTY of folks today who seemed to be having a great time. They even GASP! were drinking beer. How is it possible that people could obey the rules, still be able to have their beer....and somehow manage to have a good time??

It defies explanation!
