New Tailgating Rules

I can say that I'm now thinking twice about driving to Iowa City to see any games this year.

I'm not going to be looking over my shoulder every 15 seconds for cops because I'm drinking a bloody mary on the sidewalk. I enjoy going to the games for the entire experience, which includes tailgating. Our group doesn't cause trouble or bother anybody.

I'd rather stay home and watch the game in my theater room than get a ticket for a stupid reason like this.

The bars are a real option now pre-game. The Coralville side of course

This almost seems to be part of the game, doesn't it? Drive people back into the bars... where the bars will probably also over-serve and then people have to still get to the game. Hmm.

At any rate, it seems like this is a massive overreaction, particularly when a great number of people are not the problem.

That said, I really don't understand the attitude of the people who apparently cannot 'enjoy' a football game without being plastered. I saw drunk college students at the last game I went to in Iowa City several years ago, and I saw them for the game in Chicago, too, when one of 'em nearly started a fight. I've seen it at the couple of Colorado football games I've gone to, as well.

Maybe it's just the fact that I do not like being drunk, so I can't understand the appeal of being a complete lush and ******* myself because I have no sense of self control?

I tailgated in the dental lot, walked through the main lot, down melrose and went downtown after the game.

Only place a saw any problems was downtown in the pedmall after the game. There were 2 different fights right outside of brothers within the ten minutes i was standing there. No police officers to be found.

Officers strolled (rode in a golf cart) through the dental lot and didn't bug anyone.

Saw a couple people getting tickets written up, but im pretty sure it was for being underage.

Didn't have a beer with me when walking down Melrose but really nothing has changed as far as im concerned. I don't understand why anyone would use this as an excuse not to go to the game. It's really pretty simple to follow. Don't have an open container on Melrose. They aren't prohibiting you from tailgating.

Says more about you than it does about the cops/university officials/other boogeymen.

There's definitely some massive overreaction happening around this issue.

Who are you to say that there are not overzealous police. Were you at every single tailgate or shakedown Dwayne? If you don't have a problem with it great, move to a different thread.

We tailgated in Finkbine Commuter.... it really wasn't too much different, other than nobody was leaving the lot with a beer in hand, and there weren't people diving into the trees to releive themselves, so the lines to the port-a-pots were longer.
I like to grill out, play some bags and have 2-3 beers an hour till gametime.... as long as I can continue to do that, I'm happy.
I will admit that it was weird not walking to the stadium and having one last beer before the game, but I'll get used to it.

Seriously....
Committee to Improve Hawkeye Football Game Day Culture???

Are you ******** me?

We tailgated in the RV lot next to Finkbine, and I talked to others that tailgated at Finkbine and there was no noticible difference. The only thing I can say was there was a party bus parked next to us, and they were blaring rap music full of f-bombs. The police came by once and told them to turn it down, and they did. The police left and they turned it back up, but with rock music. Thirty minutes later the cops were back and they were not happy. The music went off but no one was forced to leave. Others had on music but not as loud, and the police drove right on by; no problems. That's the only thing I saw remotely close to an incident and it was warranted.
After the game, when I knew we were well past our hour cut-off time, the cops drove by once and told us we had to put the beer away in 45 minutes. We said thanks and they were on there way.
We had people drinking rum and cokes out of dixie cups and the cops never even looked at them; just like any other year. I think as long as you are smart, and don't just leave liquor bottles out for everyone to see you won't be bothered. It seemed like any other tailgate I've been to at Finkbine.

Yeah, but some people would claim that since you didn't see *every* incident, you cannot comment on things.

He's not claiming that others are overreacting like you. Every lot is different, as are the experiences of each person or group in each lot.

What Barta and Mason did to Iowa tailgating is disgusting. Crack down on those that deserve it. We should be able to walk down Melrose with a beer. We should be able to play drinking games. We should be able to have a vodka and OJ. It's retarded to think they can dictate what our drink of choice is.

There is a difference between drinking and getting sh!tfaced drunk.

This is ********. We are almost BYU.
