New Tailgating Rules

Sorry, but anyone who needs alcohol to have fun has a problem. I saw PLENTY of folks today who seemed to be having a great time. They even GASP! were drinking beer. How is it possible that people could obey the rules, still be able to have their beer....and somehow manage to have a good time??

It defies explanation!

According to the "rules" you cannot drink any alcohol... Obey the damn rules people!

I've never called anyone out on these boards, but you have it coming. You obviously are a complete tool. I most certainly do not have a problem, but yes alcohol makes tailgating fun. I drink 7 times per year (our 7 home games). If you don't like beer fine, but dont' pretend that nobody should be drinking dumba$$ just because you don't like it. It's thinking like yours that puts these ridiculous rules in place.

Also the cops were prevalent at Myrtle today. They arrived at 6, left for over an hour and then I saw them every 30 minutes or so from 8 on. They were in one spot for quite some time passing out tickets. Then the short dude with little man syndrome proceeded to walk over and dump out 4 bottles of liquor from the people across from us. Its just a shame what the University has turned tailgating into. Wait until Iowa has a 3 or 4 win season in the future. Iowa City will be a ghost town. In the past if we weren't good you could at least have fun tailgating. Now that tailgating isn't allowed to be fun, all you can rely on is the team. I think Barta and Mason will regret these decisions one day when the money being pumped into the local economy and the University starts to dwindle.

It did seem they cut back on the number of Port-O-Potties. The lines were incredibly long today. Longest I've ever stood in line by far.

I started a thread like this earlier. I'm pretty sure there were less port o potties. What a freaking joke.

Our tailgate was told to lower our music or we would be forced to leave. It wasn't a "you guys should turn your music down" it was "turn that down or you're out of here." Apparently they were OK with us drinking beer carrying on, but our music was too loud. BTW, it was Back In Black being played when we were accosted.

Agree 100 percent. The next so so season we have and people won't be showing up. Some of these people in charge need to take a good long look at this situation.

I agree with New Mex Hawk that it's going to take a stand by the fans to not spend money to drive change with regards to these rules. We standing up to Barta, the cops or whomever is in charge is not going to work. It's going to be that $100 million impact to the local economy becoming a $75 million impact and lower and lower.

Oh and the new rules absolutely stink. It was a very sad day for me in that regard.

Fortunately I don't give a rip what you think.

Sucks to be you I guess.

We tailgate in the Dental Lot. At about 9AM, a group of 4 cops come walking through. The people just up the row from us had a bottle of vodka on the table. I think they were drinking vodka and orange juice.

This was a group of people probably in their 50's or 60's. They weren't playing loud music. They weren't being loud or obnoxious. They had a nice tailgate set up and were making breakfast and enjoying the chance to socialize.

The cops came up to them and didn't even warn them. Just started writing a ticket. At one point, I heard one of the guys say fairly loudly (mocking the cops), "Yeah, I'm a hardened criminal".

After about 20 minutes, he got his ticket and the cops were on their way.

I was thinking to myself about how these "rules" are left to a lot of interpretation and discretion by the police. Why do some people get warnings and have their alcohol poured out, and others immediately get tickets?

Don't blame the cops fellas.

They undoubtedly were given their marching orders to "enforce as dictated"...i.e. the powers-2-be wanted to make an opening statement, and set the bar at a high level.

You can't blame the police for having to enforce a stupid law. This entire Charlie Foxtrot is politically driven, as usual.

Regarding your last comment, the post game show on WMT had an officer on the show and he said they are really like grizzly bears just sticking their paws in the stream. They might grab one salmon while the other salmon get away, even though the salmon he caught wasn't doing anything different then the other salmon.

The instant citations are overboard and ridiculous, especially in situations like you describe. But first game of the year, prior to the Iowa State game, they are trying to make a big 1st impression with these new rules.

So much for the "overreaction" to the rules. This is B.S. and the only ones who seem to support the new rules are those that do not drink at all.

If all these stories are true then there definitely is a discrepancy between how the cops are going about their business. We always park in the Finkbine golf course lot and I would say that it was really no different than last year. The cops rode through on their golf cart about three times in the morning, much like they do every time we have been there. I did see them once stop and ID some people but that was it. After they game, they rode through twice, the first time was around 3:00, which would have been more than an hour after the game ended, and they didn't say anything. We were just packing up to leave at 3:45 when they rode through again and told the group down the way that they needed to wrap up their drinking at 4:15. They didn't say anything to them about getting out of the lot. The only thing different I saw today was a few more cops on Melrose.

Just had a discussion with four people this morning who are big time hawk fans. They were planning on going to game next week to tailgate and try and scalp tickets. I explained the tailgate stories. He said well looks like I will head to American this afternoon and buy a bigger and better TV and we will stay home.

If you bro's had to face the dilemna I did yesterday, you wouldn't be posting a bunch of support the police, don't blame the police crap, especially from Seth. These cops relish the opportunity to get their jollies buy busting you and they WILL bust you. I found out the hard way

As an update to this post I saw over on another thread there is a link to a KCRG story where University Heights cops say that they are not going to enforce the new rules. They said that they want to concentrate more on underage drinkers and illegal parking. I would say our tailgate experience at Finkbine golf in consistent with what they said.
