Multiple Coaches Leaving the Program

Unless KF, KOK, and Phil Parker as liars that would be incorrect. They all have said in the past that KOK and Parker had offers over the years but wanted to stay on under KF.

In 14 years has there really only been two assistants that have received offers from other schools?

On the one hand, I am glad to see changes being made. On the other what does it say about the program that after 14 years (I know some have not been with his all that time) these coaching changes are being made and the response by most folks are " Meh... its no big loss"

It doesn't appear these assistants are even being sought after by lower tier schools. (Has Campbell even landed a gig yet?) To me that isn't a sign of a strong and healthy program.

I think the changes are a good thing. Time will tell but something needs to change. I am hoping as the NFL season closes we are able to bring another coach or two that Brian knew in the NFL. He was with Atlanta and New England

Personally I think its a good thing...I cant name one thing any of these guys does that cant be easily replaced

Yes, but how many replacements under Ferentz have been better than the original?

Just because you don't like KF, doesn't mean you have to be an idiot, does it? You think he is feeling any kind of heat from you, or Barta? Dude has an ironclad contact, and he is gonna get paid, he is under no pressure.

I know this is foreign to you, but maybe, just maybe KF cares about the football program, sees that it has slipped out of joint since 2009, and is taking the necessary steps to get it fixed, and back up to speed. It started last year, and continued this year, and I'm sure if need be even more next year.

"2. Don't say kf doesn't make changes."

He hardly ever has since he's been here. You know the only reason he's doing this, if rumor is true, is because he's feeling heat. Or, gee, maybe he's doing it because he finally realizes this program now sucks under his leadership.

Regardless of why he is making changes, which is speculation, when your whole staff has been replaced that is major change. Usually it IS when the heat is on so you can't hold that also against kf saying he is only doing it because the heat is on.

It is a double edged sword for KF. So it comes down to which you think is the lesser of two evils?

If KF had confidence in his coaching staff he would stand by them. I can't see him making wholesale changes in the name of self-preservation. It doesn't seem to be his typical method of operation.

So that begs the question why would KF have allowed "sub-standard" coaches to remain on his staff for so long? One of the supposed biggest strengths of this program is player development. Taking 2 and 3 star caliber players and making them into a "sum is greater than the whole" unit.

In order to have success in player development one would think you would have to have strong, competent assistants to facilitate that development. Why now are these coaches unable to do so? It doesn't seem like a skill that someone forgets how to do. Are these terminations an admission Iowa's success early on during his tenure was more luck than skill of his coaches?

I guess there is a third option. That is the assistant coaches are leaving a sinking ship. I find this to be the weakest and most implausible option as none of the coaches are leaving for bigger or better programs.

Not necessarily. If you are fleeing a sinking program, one that has seriously underperformed in recent seasons, what bigger or better program is going to want to hire you?

That's not what he said.

You may have a point here, unfortunately. We've had a few coaches move on to bigger things earlier in KF's tenure (Philbin, Aiken) but it's hard to think of an ambitious coordinator-in-waiting on the current staff, apart from Brain.

It is great that coaches love working for Kirk, it genuinely is. But it's a fine line between that, and getting too comfortable/complacent in your position, or KIRK HIMSELF getting too comfortable with the guys he's around, and not noticing that nobody else wants them. I am not saying that has happened here, it may be grossly unfair, what the hell do I know. But you have to wonder.

I am hoping this is genuinely a sign of Kirk admitting "You know, this just isn't good enough. It's not working." If so, I doubt it will be expressed that way, as he is rightly famous for not throwing coaches (or players) under the bus, and I love that about the guy. From everything we've heard, there's a lot he could have said publicly about Kaz, and he bit his lip. That's old-school in a good way.

I can't believe I'm defending all-purpose villain Gerg Davis, but as bad as the offense was, had JVB even been the #80 QB in Division I, we'd be bowling.

It's a team game. But I've been watching Iowa football for 32 years and have never seen a season where the performance of one player impacted a team's results this much.

These are names I came up with off top of my head (I looked up the details)
Ron Aiken 8 yrs under KF to Arizona Cardinals NFL 2007 and still DL coach there
Joe Philbin 4 yrs under KF. Went to Green Bay 2003-2011, HC of Dolphins 2012
Bret Bielema 3 yrs under KF (hired by Hayden)
KOK hired by KF, 13 seasons to Dolphins 2012.
Coach Kaz hired by KF 2004-11, then to Nebraska for 2012 season

I don't have a good enough knowledge of other programs to know if this is good, bad or average. It seems like Hayden "developed" many more assistants during his time than this.

It wasn't JVB's fault Davis stinks up the place as and OC.

Disappointed to hear about Raih....had the chance to speak to him for a bit this summer at a camp my son attended. He went out of his way to speak to me about my son. He's a good dude. I guess I'll be looking for some Red Raider mail in the near future.

i'm actually more prone to believe rumors like this that come from random posters with low post counts over the rest of us losers who spend tons of time on here. when has Ghost ever broke any news? exactly...

that said, i'll believe it when i see it, and refrain from commenting till then.
