Yes he was. I agree he seems like location was and is the main reason for leaving Miami and staying at Marian.
I think he also wanted to coach his son, who finished his career at Marian I believe.

Lick had a SERIOUS rebuilding job on his hands when he came here. The Fraud left a completely bare cupboard and I still wish to this day he would've coached that horrible bunch. The Fraud abandoned a sinking ship and Lick wasn't equipped to handle such a huge fixer upper of a basketball program. Blame for Iowa basketball slipping to where it was 4 years ago: 90% Alfraud, 10% Lick
I would say more like 60-40. Lick took over a crappy team, but Tyler Smith probably doesn't leave if the coaching doesn't change. Lick's legacy was players running away. Smith, Kelly, Peterson, Freeman, Tucker, Fuller, Payne.
Granted, Iowa would have never been close to competing for the B1G if those guys all stuck around, but they wouldn't have been quite as bad as they were.
You forgot about Brennan Cougill
FRAN IS THE MAN and had a plan from day one. It took a little while for some to believe but from the very first press conference if you were paying attention you could feel it. Not only can he flat out coach but he is also willing to throw down CHAIRS for the players and program.
I wonder if Thad Matta regrets leaving Butler for Ohio State and having Todd Lickliter follow him at Butler, only to have Lickliter leave Butler for Iowa only to drag the program down so far that Iowa had to let him go and bring in Fran McCaffery who just thumped Ohio State and Thad Matta on Sunday...

From article:
“I would be dishonest if I said I didn’t regret it,†Lickliter told the Star about leaving Butler. “I enjoyed it so much. But I was so happy for them and so thankful that I had been a part of it. What I regretted more than leaving was that I didn’t have the time to duplicate it (at Iowa).â€

McCabe was the other one. It would have been a great class if they stuck around, but that seems doubtful. It still likely would have taken six or seven years to reach his first tourney, which isn't acceptable. In addition, his style of play was about as exciting as watching paint dry. A nice guy but not a good a fit for Iowa.
P.S. I don't feel bad for anyone who got paid several million dollars to do nothing. There are worse things in the world that being a coach that was terminated early.
He may regret leaving Butler, but I doubt he regretted cashing the checks long after he left here.
Anyway, I wish the guy no ill will. He tried, it didn't work out. I still respect him as a good man.
What??? Larson would've been booted for 1 of his numerous robberies he enjoyed taking part in. Marble and McCabe would NOT be the same players that they are now under Fran. No f'n way! Name one player that got better under Lackluster? Exactly.
