Lickliter regrets leaving Butler for Iowa

Can't say that TL buried Iowa's program all by his lonesome. Nope. No way. Not even close.
Boobs-ly started that train down its tracks 10 years before.

Blame Boobs-ly for horrenedously firing TD for wonder kid.
Then blame Iowa for hurrying its search for a mature white coach after wonder-kid flamed out.

I feel for TL. Wonder-kid was greedy and sported an entitlement mentality the likes I've never seen. TL was just in over his head.

I don't harbor much ill will towards Lickliter. Alfraud occupies most of it. What Lickliter should regret is not bringing in assistants that could recruit (once Stephens wasn't coming with). What he should regret is spending too much time on his fat arse in his office, rather than taking an active role in recruiting.

His class before he was fired was shaping up to be pretty decent, Marble, Brust, Cody Larson. Can't remember the others.

McCabe was the other one. It would have been a great class if they stuck around, but that seems doubtful. It still likely would have taken six or seven years to reach his first tourney, which isn't acceptable. In addition, his style of play was about as exciting as watching paint dry. A nice guy but not a good a fit for Iowa.

P.S. I don't feel bad for anyone who got paid several million dollars to do nothing. There are worse things in the world that being a coach that was terminated early.

i agree.

Lick won 13, 15, and 10 games overall. 6, 5, and 4 games in B1G. FM won 11, 18, and 25 overall. 4, 8, and 9 in B1G. Don't tell me he didn't have enough time.

Marble wouldn't fit in Lick's system.

Cody Larson? Went to Florida after being suspended his senior year in high school for pain killers. Then got into trouble at Florida for sneaking into a bar and breaking into a car. Then couldn't meet requirements to stay on the team and is now at South Dakota State. Who knows if he'd still be at Iowa.

Brust probably would have been the next Lick defect.

And McCabe is the other player from that class.

No one was saying what would have happened to the class, I just was commenting that his final class was looking pretty decent.

Gentleman what's done is done and if it had not gone down the way it did..Perhaps we are not sitting where we are today. If Fran stays here,we may be on the cusp of the best era Iowa BB has ever seen. This team rivals the Roy Marble era teams maybe not in talent ,but as a group that is deep and plays very very well as a team.. There is no doubt we have the better coach leading them now.

I wonder if Thad Matta regrets leaving Butler for Ohio State and having Todd Lickliter follow him at Butler, only to have Lickliter leave Butler for Iowa only to drag the program down so far that Iowa had to let him go and bring in Fran McCaffery who just thumped Ohio State and Thad Matta on Sunday...

I'm not looking to throw dirt on the guy's grave, but what's pretty interesting to me is that he went from the head coach of an average Big Ten program (arguably the best conference in the country) all the way to NAIA Division II?!?!?!

There are a lot - a lot - of NCAA division III jobs, junior college jobs, and even high school jobs that are better gigs than NAIA Division II. And it's not like he committed a major crime or NCAA infractions that scared those hundreds (thousands?) of potential employers away.

Mind-boggling.

Pretty much set for life financially, so why not take a hometown job?

Completely agree. Fran was the perfect hire.

From article:

“I would be dishonest if I said I didn’t regret it,â€￾ Lickliter told the Star about leaving Butler. “I enjoyed it so much. But I was so happy for them and so thankful that I had been a part of it. What I regretted more than leaving was that I didn’t have the time to duplicate it (at Iowa).â€￾

He should be happy for Iowa as well and thankful for the paychecks that just recently ended.

I regret that he left Butler as well. I regret every postseason when the news would arrive that our best player from the previous year had had enough of Todd and was leaving. I regret having to watch three years of the "Butler Way" which meant 50 point games and 20 plus turnovers. I regret having to watch Todd sit on the bench with his head in his hands not having a clue as to what to do next to stop the bleeding. I regret sitting in a three quarters empty arena. And I regret the three sorriest years of Iowa basketball that I have experienced.

Not going to read that article. I'm sure he is a nice guy, but he all but killed Iowa basketball. Dude was waaaay in over his head.

What i miss most about lick ball is the time out called before the first media time out. That was exhilarating!

FRAN IS THE MAN and had a plan from day one. It took a little while for some to believe but from the very first press conference if you were paying attention you could feel it. Not only can he flat out coach but he is also willing to throw down for the players and program.

It became very apparent that not only was the cupboard becoming bare at the end of Stevie Wonder but Lick had absolutely ZERO clue how to run a program in a major conference. I actually felt bad for his assistants.

Everyone says he was a nice guy but how does a nice guy run off any decent player we had and then blame the players left for the result? Playing your son meaningful minutes who was challenged to make it on a D-III roster. That is a serious YO! Your best come back is needing more time. Well it is too late to call the doctor after death my friend. Next time you had better bring it from day one.

He may regret leaving Butler, but I doubt he regretted cashing the checks long after he left here.

Anyway, I wish the guy no ill will. He tried, it didn't work out. I still respect him as a good man.
