Lickliter regrets leaving Butler for Iowa

Lick had a SERIOUS rebuilding job on his hands when he came here. The Fraud left a completely bare cupboard and I still wish to this day he would've coached that horrible bunch. The Fraud abandoned a sinking ship and Lick wasn't equipped to handle such a huge fixer upper of a basketball program. Blame for Iowa basketball slipping to where it was 4 years ago: 90% Alfraud, 10% Lick

I would say more like 60-40. Lick took over a crappy team, but Tyler Smith probably doesn't leave if the coaching doesn't change. Lick's legacy was players running away. Smith, Kelly, Peterson, Freeman, Tucker, Fuller, Payne.

Granted, Iowa would have never been close to competing for the B1G if those guys all stuck around, but they wouldn't have been quite as bad as they were.

Anyways, I am actually thankful for Lickliter running the program into the ground. If he was consistently 6-10 or 7-9 in the B1G, he would still be here and we would still suck.

You forgot about Brennan Cougill

FRAN IS THE MAN and had a plan from day one. It took a little while for some to believe but from the very first press conference if you were paying attention you could feel it. Not only can he flat out coach but he is also willing to throw down CHAIRS for the players and program.

FIFY

He had enough time. They weren't progressing, players were leaving and most importantly attendance was plummeting. Was also playing his son who was intramural kind of talent. I miss him walking across the court with his suit coat drooped over his arm. I miss Jon's arm bar when a defender is on him. Anyway, I also felt a little bad for him just because he seemed like a nice guy. He just didn't have the right personality for this level of b-ball. He seemed too reserved.

I wonder if Thad Matta regrets leaving Butler for Ohio State and having Todd Lickliter follow him at Butler, only to have Lickliter leave Butler for Iowa only to drag the program down so far that Iowa had to let him go and bring in Fran McCaffery who just thumped Ohio State and Thad Matta on Sunday...

Two degrees of Todd Lickliter. Nicely noted.

Not even in the same league as what Fran walked into.

From article:

“I would be dishonest if I said I didn’t regret it,â€￾ Lickliter told the Star about leaving Butler. “I enjoyed it so much. But I was so happy for them and so thankful that I had been a part of it. What I regretted more than leaving was that I didn’t have the time to duplicate it (at Iowa).â€￾

The last sentence is exactly why I hate that d-bag. It's Iowa's fault that he brought D-2 talent. It's Iowa's fault he insisted on playing an archaic style of basketball that NONE of the top flight recruits want to play, and that no fan under the age of 90 enjoys watching. Yes, yes, you dumb mofo.....it's all Iowa's fault. That frickin clown was incredibly lucky that he inherited an incredibly successful program that someone else built entirely.

McCabe was the other one. It would have been a great class if they stuck around, but that seems doubtful. It still likely would have taken six or seven years to reach his first tourney, which isn't acceptable. In addition, his style of play was about as exciting as watching paint dry. A nice guy but not a good a fit for Iowa.

P.S. I don't feel bad for anyone who got paid several million dollars to do nothing. There are worse things in the world that being a coach that was terminated early.

What??? Larson would've been booted for 1 of his numerous robberies he enjoyed taking part in. Marble and McCabe would NOT be the same players that they are now under Fran. No f'n way! Name one player that got better under Lackluster? Exactly.

He may regret leaving Butler, but I doubt he regretted cashing the checks long after he left here.

Anyway, I wish the guy no ill will. He tried, it didn't work out. I still respect him as a good man.

Good men don't CONTINUALLY pass the buck. Not once have I ever read anything where the *** clown accepted any responsibility for the dismal seasons he produced at Iowa. Not once. I won't even go into playing his own kid, who couldn't ball with most high schoolers.

I will join the chorus of those who say they, too, regret Lickliter leaving Butler for Iowa. The only bright side I can see is three further years of decline may have allowed an up-and-comer at a smaller school out East to get on Iowa's radar. Right now Fran McCaffery strikes me as just the right coach for the situation he inherited.

Did you stop reading his post? He never said they would have stuck around. No one is saying they would be better or even the same. Fran is the better coach for Iowa and nobody is saying otherwise.

We can all agree it didn't work out at all and was a terrible hire. Can't blame him for taking the job and pay raise and I certainly believe he tried his best. However, I take issue with his comment that he wasn't given enough time to duplicate his success at Butler. The program got worse every year he was here and there was zero indication it was going to get better.

A little different coaching and recruiting guys at Butler then it was Iowa and playing in the Big 10 for Lick. It just wasn't the right fit for him at Iowa. I never cared for the guy and thought he was a bad hire from day one. It happens allot when coaches change schools, just not a good fit.
