Jok to Valley

This is all very entertaining to say the least. I have so much I want to address in this thread but it has gotten kind of crazy. I'll try to keep it short.

Jok and Nixon are a package deal. They obviously have to be...logistics. When we drafted little league teams they were a package and neither of them is going to be playing any baseball in college.

The fact they were going to transfer has been well known for weeks. I had heard this from 2 unrelated TRHS sources and my son (student athlete at TRHS). Valley comes as no surprise. That's the only school I've heard mentioned over the last 2 weeks. Don't ask me about uniforms with names. I don't know and don't care. That's not why they're at Valley.

HAWKEYESTATE4ever seems to know some things and blends mostly fact with some fiction. I'm referencing most of the Jok related threads on here not just this one. There's usually a bit of spin and/or speculation. I don't know everything about this transfer situation but what I do know coincides with what Jon has posted.

People are getting way too wrapped up in all of this. It's not like Jok has given a verbal commit to Iowa. The only reason I even suspect he's leaning toward the Hawks is because he already has the "transfer" thing down. Kidding...just kidding!

Thanks. I noticed that too. I think that way back when this started someone accidentally left off the first part of the quote bracket, and it never got fixed.

Honestly though, I know Mike Nixon, and both Peter Nixon and Big Pete. I've known them for years. The two kids are great kids, and I wish them the best. And I know Horner is a great guy as well. I have no issues or vested interest in anyone involved here. I was simply posting some (I have left MANY details out) of what I have heard from multiple sources over the last 2-3 weeks, and past few months.

I now wish I would not have done that because I am not trying to p*ss anyone off. I wish Mike, P. Nixon and Big Pete nothing but the best, and I know they will do well at Valley.

But remember, these two guys, along with Marble will take away three starting spots
from West Des Moines kids who have came up in the program. That will upset somebody. Not to mention it cuts into Abrahamson's shots a great deal.

Valley will be the best team in the CIML, and possibly the best in the state. Should be fun to watch.

Nixon will not start at Valley and might not get any PT. Marble will definitely not start for Valley. Marble is not anymore than an average hs bball player. I miss spoke in my post earlier (Marble will not be on Sophomore team), but it will be hard for him to get PT at Valley. People have just looked at his name and ASSUME he is good. He is like the worst player on his Kingdom Hoops team (yes he plays for kingdom hoops).

Its amazing how this is blowing up at a school that has never been relevant in basketball. I am a graduate of VHS and it is about time for something good to happen to the program. In the past we have had the best athletes that dont even go out for the sport. There is an investigation being done at Roosevelt so something must have happened. So if you had any school to choose for your son to play at, wouldnt you want to go play for Horner??? BIG PICTURE!! DING!

I'm pretty sure that Peter Nixon and Peter Jok quit/left the Kingdom Hoops AAU team in the midseason last summer. This sounds like part II of that whole ordeal. The players and parents weren't happy with XYZ coach or how the kids were bring coached/style/philosophy.

The change in the transfer rule from 90 days to 180 days will not pass this legislative session.

Overall I don't changing from 90 days to 180 days is necessary. Currently if a kid transfers he is forced to sit out 90 days which equals 1/8 of their high school career. If the change is made to 180 days the student is now held out of varsity competition for 1/4 of their high school career.

These kids are not college athletes where they have 5 years to play 4. They can't redshirt.

The 180 day penalty is too strong in my opinion. We are punishing the kids and in most cases it's the parents (or coaches) who are pushing for the change or want a better situation for the kid.

Sitting out 180 days will only prevent current HS athletes from transferring, but that isn't going to solve the problem because kids will just start transferring earlier after their 8th grade year since there is no penalty for a kid transferring in at the beginning of their HS years.

Also, HS level players parents will just rent in or move to the district they want to attend. That doesn't happen as often now because it is just easier to transfer and sit out the 90 days. But if it goes to 180 more houses will be for sale.

as an unbiased outside party it seems like this Nixon guy is trying to use Jok for his family's own benefit. it also seems like he thinks his kid is the best and it if something is not going right it must be the coaches fault, not his.

I agree but if he does or gets more pt than he should, well I think we know how well that is going to go over. We'll see. I don't have a kid on the team but I know people that do and it is already an issue.

You have good instincts.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but who cares if high school kids transfer for sports? We're talking about high school sports, people. Iowa high school sports. This isn't big money college basketball.

Would I transfer my kid to a different school for sports? No, I think that's silly. But if some other family wants their kid to transfer schools, knock yourself out. It's your family.

Jeff Horner was on with Marty Tirrell yesterday and he did a good job of explaining what happened.

That interview was awkward. Jeff was so defensive when he doesn't need to be. They transfer, they play bball, Jeff didn't pay or promise them anything, what's the big deal? As long as Horner didn't do anything wrong, nothing should bother him that much. It's HS bball, everyone calm down.

I don't really care either. If anything, I enjoy and encourage it. It adds a nice little spice. I don't begrudge these kids for transferring for sports. For me, sports was way more important than academics in high school. Every kid that can get a D in algebra and read at a 5th grade level can graduate high school. Only the select few can excel at sports at the big schools.

You probably did not hear the lead in where Tirrell was questioning Horner's character and suggesting that Nixon was promised playing time/starting so he could get his hands on Jok.

Horner was also probably a little sensitive as just 2 weeks ago Tirrell announced/guaranteed on the day that Matt Woodley was going to Truman State that Horner was leaving Valley to be Woodley's assistant which quite a bit a problem for Horner with his players at Valley.

Nixon asked for it at Dowling and was told no.

The only things I really care about here are...
A) Will this kid end up at Iowa?
B) Is he a difference maker at the B1G level?

A) Jury's out, not holding my breath because
B) Yes, he will be a difference maker at the next level. The bluebloods will be hard after this kid. I've read a few different times over the past year or so that Jok is further along in his development at this stage than Barnes was, and has a similar amount of talent.
