Is Iowa basketball in trouble already?

Iowa basketball has been in trouble since Tom Davis left, IMO. There is nothing to get excited about.

Iowa basketball is in a constant state of trouble, just like our educational system, the social security system, our immigration system, etc.

The latest crisis is just the latest crisis. Expect more crises for the next year. Year 2 and Year 3 will be better.

When Hoiberg adds a corrections officer to his staff I will begin to worry because that may be what is required to keep White and some of his players in school and on the floor.

Hoiberg and White said "he has learned his lesson." I remember someone at Iowa a few years ago say the same thing.

Pierre Pierce is to Iowa as Royce White is to Iowa State

BTW, just saw video on the news of White beating up an undercover cop at the Mall of America! Winner!

Why are you so d*mn fixated on this ISU "recruit/transfer/where can I go where the cops don't know me"? If White even makes it to Ames, I predict he lasts no more than one year.

IF Iowa State is successful with Fred's "win at all costs" mentality and Iowa continues to struggle with the "good guy" mentality, would you want kids like White if it = wins? It's working for Iowa in football but basketball recruiting is a different beast.

Because Lames has been getting better talent than Iowa for years now. When was the last time Iowa had a player drafted and PLAY in the NBA? Getting commits from Woodbury, Paige, Oglesby, Uthoff or a top 100 player will be a huge step in changing this. I'm an Iowa fan, so when ISU excels at something over Iowa...I get annoyed!!

We might as well stop the CHA expansion right now, and cancel the men's basketball program, because we're doomed to have a bunch of clean-cut do-gooders, and ISU will go to the Final Four with Fred's Felons.

Maybe Fran should start recruiting the early releasers at the state penitentiary. Maybe then we would have a chance at a national championship.

???

No, I wouldn't. Those situations inevitably blow up on you. That may work at places like Memphis, Kentucky, or any other school where Calipari has coached. But Iowa doesn't have that sort of margin, or cushion, to tolerate the bad apple or three and simply re-load with talent of questionable character the following year.

Let Hoiberg take a flyer on this one ... and see how hard he lands.

Iowa and Iowa State basketball are both starting over. In order for each of us to succeed we need strong recruiting on top of coaching (where Fran has a huge edge on ISU) but my opinion of ISU/Iowa basketball is that ISU has done a better job of this CURRENTLY. This may change soon. But right now Hoiberg has a gotten more and a few highly regarded recruits. Please don't bash me because my opinion on a single topic may be bias toward ISU.

Too early to tell if McCaffery and his staff are going to be successful at recruiting or not. While Fran certainly seems much more personable than Todd Lickliter (hard not to be), we'll see if he can be successful recruiting talented basketball players given the depths to which the Hawkeye BB program has sunk.

We'll know more by this November (early signing day), and much more in 2012 (if McCaffery does not land Marcus Paige, that will be a bad sign IMO).

I like this!!

Is that like going to a BCS game with 1/3 of your team having a criminal record?

Seriously, this fanbase has to stop throwing stones. It is embarrassing for Iowans who live in other states that aren't able to participate in these circle jerks about the Hawks. You spend a lot of time explaining that not all Iowans are that way. You all come across as insecure to other fans. It needs to stop.

Iowa basketball hasn't been relevant since the late 80's. They have been no better than Iowa State in that time. They each schedule cake non-conference games, and then win just enough conference games to make the tourney. IF the stars align, then they can win a round.

Hell, Iowa State even won a couple of regular season titles, and a couple conference tournaments. Alford won three Big 10 tournies. I would say they have had a better last 15 years, even with the joke that was McDermott.

Plus, they each have also been on the losing end of a hugely embarrassing NCAA first round loss. So there isn't even smack to talk there.

You live in a state that doesn't have internet?

spursfan here got banned...twice from Cyclone Fanatic because he never agreed with anything anyone ever said, and I suspect that he'll do the same here. Eventually he'll say something stupid and get himself clipped.

Yeah, and it is ******* me off. I just thought it was a big sports story, considering it is July. Should I be surprised an ISU fan thinks this guy is great? Not really, I hear about ISU EVERY FREAKING DAY! I apologize for bringing this up but it is a little slow in the sports world right now and wanted to talk about something and viewing the posts it would seem others are mildly interested as well.

Dude, I thought I was wound tightly.

In trouble??? You mean winning a third of their games the last few years isn't trouble enough? I thought with a new coach and being mad, You could pencil Iowa in for a 7 seed in the tourney. Guess I am getting my hopes up a little high. I thought it was just Lickliter being the problem, not the fact the only thing worse than Iowa's basketball talent is its facilities.
Its going to be a long term fixed that is going to have to be fixed. Face facts folks, in football terms, its gonna take a Hayden Fry type rebuilding job here to get the basketball team back in the tourney 4 out of 5 year and at least Hayden had fan support. Can Iowa be back to being a basketball tourney team, yes. But its going to take an equal commitment from basketball fans and the athletic department to make this successful. Worrying about how a rebuilding job is going before a single tip off is a little much.

He sure sounds the same as IAryno on the DMR, busabus. I get the impression that Ryno is a Hawk fan. I also think that jacknicholson is the same on both sites. I remember Tinsley playing for the Clones his senior season. Toward the end of the season, he did not attend classes and played in a casual manner, especially in the loss to Hampton in the tournament. He would dribble the ball slowly down the court and toss the ball toward the basket. Pitiful. I believe Franball will bring the fans back to Carver morgue as clicheuser righteously termed it. The experience gained last year and the athleticism coming in with Basabe, Marble, McCabe and Cartwright just might enable us to win the close ones we almost won last year. Nothing wrong with positive thinking. Sounds like the players are having fun in the PTL and have left the traumatic style of Lickball behind. They have bought into Fran's system and attitude. I can't wait for a possible November doubleheader with a basketball game following a football victory. Priceless.
