Is Iowa basketball in trouble already?

I say this because ISU just picked up Royce White (#19 recruit out of HS) today. They now will have Elgin Cook (#12 SF, Top 100), PSU transfer Chris Babb and a few other impressive kids for 2011 season.

I look at Iowa's recruits for 2011...nothing!! Don't get me wrong here, Basabe seems like a great pickup but Melvin Ejim for the Clones has been just as impressive in the Metro City league here in Des Moines. ISU has a bunch of tall guys this season and our biggest guy is 6'7"!! ISU/Hoiberg are putting together a nice nucleus of talent already. McCaffery needs to start getting some big commitments soon from the talent rich Iowa classes of 2011 & 2012, otherwise, he and the staff are going to have tough sledding against the Clones and in the Big Ten. Hoiberg's recruiting has been a B+ so far, McCaffery gets a C. But the coaching experience is the big thing. Hoiberg has nice talent but can he coach them?

After reading that, I'm thinking this board needs a Ryno-plasty.

I am NOT this other Ryno!! I wouldn't post anything on that crap newspaper!! Don't you have to pay for that anyway?

However, I just looked him up and he is delusional. I can guarantee you that is NOT me. If I could post there I would post on Iowa articles. It is annoying that you assume that.

I am just a passionate Hawkeye fan and absolutely HATE listening to Cyclone fans clamor about every freaking thing positive that happens to them. And it sucks because they are recruiting better than Iowa with a coach who has NEVER coached!! That is frustrating! I know Fran has it in him just annoyed with giddy Cyclone fans currently! Perhaps they get so excited about everything because they have never truly enjoyed success???

Maybe that should tell you the "He has NEVER coached!!" argument really doesnt mean anything outside the world of message board guys who obviously care about the wrong things. It obviously means little to the solid recruiting class he's put together.

Exactly, no matter how much Hoiberg's NBA connections and his GM speed dial don't matter to message boarders and fans, it matters to the people that really matter...the recruits and players. Example, a Cyclone is having trouble with his 3 ball. Hoiberg says, even though I was in the NBA for 10 years being paid millions to pretty much only make 3's and free throws, dont take my word for it...why don't I have Reggie Miller or Larry Bird give you a call up to see what he thinks and maybe give you some advice...that would be so bad *** for a kid...

Fran needs to focus on the 2011 and 2012 classes, and not worry about short term band-aids that Hoiberg might be employing in Ames. The key for Fran is to get a big infusion of prep talent into Iowa the next two years to form the foundation of the new winning program. This first year, he had to scramble, which is understandable...but now with up to 8 schollys to give the next two years, he has to change this roster with athletic talents who are high character guys who will stick with the program.

I have zero interest in how Hoiberg decides approach his re-building program in Ames..my only concern is beating them in CHA in December, and beating them for any recruits we may both covet. Otherwise, ISU is free to do whatever.

Couldn't you say the same thing about White? For all we know, he could be no better than Tucker was... as a matter of fact, we do know that White's record is much more of an "known" issue then Tucker's was... Just sayin.

Weren't these five pages started by the same poster who was telling us back in March that Barta was going to give Lickliter a contract extension ? Enough said.

This- excellent post!

You are correct, I did post that. I posted that because of info I received from a former Iowa player and friend of mine. I was just the messenger. If Barta hadn't fired Lick, this would have happened in his mind. Sorry, but thought it would be a big deal at the time.

Can you imagine if Lick was still here WITH a contract extension? That wouldve taken apathy to a whole new level.

Mostly in terms of recruiting which is going to be hot in the next few years in state cuz there is actually some talent in the pipeline. not to mention the regional recruiting. Good players want to play with other good players. One thing that is still up in the air is going to be the attendance issue...which if you send recruits to the carver morgue then they won't want to go there to die. Its one thing to lose, its another to lose with no fans. You can see in the recent past with ISU with theri HOiberg and Meyer era and the Hawks last in state era with horner and brunner it was no coincidence that was the last really exciting and successful times for both programs...

Well that isn't exactly true for Iowa State. The Haluska/Horner/Brunner era was for the Hawks, but I think the Fizer/Tinsley run where they won a couple conference titles would have been pretty exciting for Iowa State.

As I showed before, good new hires hit home runs on thr recruiting front early. Hoiberg has been closer to this at this point, but he has been playing with some unstable explosives. If they don't blow up, he might have an unsurmountable lead on FM when it comes to the strong upcoming Iowa classes.

However, if Marble and Basabe can come in and show they have true potential to be special B10 players and the ISU experiment doesn't quite work, then FM might be in a better position.

In any event, what happens in the next 6 months will seal the fate of both coaches. If they both are able to come out and show they have their teams on the right track and show they have impressive talent on which to build, all will be fine. However, whomever falters will most likely be lost. For FH, it will mean the powder keg blew up, for FM I will mean Basabe and Marble end up looking pedestrian.

Honestly, is there no limit to the reservoir of stupidity on this board?

I was talking about with Iowa players making up the core of the team.

IMHO, you can dang close to hitting the nail on the proverbial head. My calendar is a bit long though, more like the next 18 months.

ISU took a gamble on someone who is unproven. The next 18 months will reveal quite a bit -- like how well he and the staff he has compiled will be able to use the players they have pieced together, is he able to get Big 12 caliber players, and can he keep the mometum created over the excitement of the hire moving forward.

IMHO, Iowa took a much more calculated risk with a coach who has experience building and rebuilding programs at a small and mid-major level. The next 18 months will reveal if he can get the kind of players needed to win in a major conference. His coaching skill has already been revealed.

I don't think we'll have the answers to any of those questions in December. But in December of 2011, I think we will.
